This didn't look Bayformers ish at all and I mean that as a good thing and a bad thing

Not literally, but it's hard for me to explain. I just think it's more of over-thinking the designs that they look like visual noise.

It could be more of modern day designs in general. Sometimes we think too much of 'how would it work in real life', etc, instead of just making great design work. "Lets make them look more..alien".

Of course, I'm not knocking on the artists and designers who worked on the film - they're just doing their jobs.

Probably not. But I'm also certain he won't go into it with a fresh view (and unbiased) due to having basically read about the whole movie here. Shame.
This is an interesting charge. Especially as you seemed convinced this was going to be good before you ever saw it. :funny:

Also noticed you didn't actually respond to my response to your post.

I think it looks like the Marvel flicks and Bayformers, just really cheap. Like you know where the inspiration came from, just not nearly to the same quality.

That's not totally fair to Marvel. I like their design work, though it feels like they're being designed by the same team. As much as I like the Black Panther teaser, when I saw the rooms of his royal palace, it sorta looks like Thor and Guardians. My only beef would be the Chitauri. An army of bleep-blips running around with no distinct features.

I am confused, what isn't totally fair?

I think Marvel has great design work. But then I feel like sometimes their set designs feel like they're coming from the same team. Where as I think Bayformers design work in full sorta sucked from the get-go. Even with Bay leaving, it won't change anything with the next few films.

I don't like the intricate design all that much for Bayformers, but it looks extremely well polished. Like it all looks very high end and expensive, way more then Marvel, which can at times look cheap.

With ILM, they are wearing themselves thin, even with their A team. It's just that it takes time to develop new software to push the envelope. When that happens, then artists have to learn and adapt to it. That takes time and money.

If they have projects hitting them nonstop, then they develop new tools. And if they do, it'll be a slow burn. So now it's up to WETA, or even the smaller companies like Double Neg, Framestore, MPC, etc to handle the part, which later gets integrated into the community (unless it's propitiatory).

It's a shame because IDW and even Full Moon Studios created beautiful new designs of and modern updates of the Transformers that don't look like vomited metal twisted up garbage.

It's clear with Power Rangers, they were informed by Bay's Transformers. Such a shame. They look awful.

How does Transformers make ILM look like they are wearing thin? Also a big problem with the Marvel flicks and such is the practical work.

Is this the Bumblebee Camaro? If so, that was real. I remember seeing it in set photos/videos iirc.
They clearly threw a real one, and probably filmed it for reference. But the one that is picked up (the shot of the guy standing next to it) is at least partially CGi, if not full on CGI. Its very clear imo. The damage gives it away.

CGI for the movie basically looks like it was put together in four weeks.

This makes how out of place it looks in that shot more amazing to me, thank you for this.

Then I'd like to at least see him torture himself watching the Neo-Saban era (essentially MMPR made modern, same showrunners, producers, writers etc) and then watch acclaimed seasons like In Space, Lost Galaxy, Time Force and RPM and then read the Boom Comics and finally understand why they needed to take a different approach in making this movie.

Taking a different approach is not the same as taking the approach they did. That is what some seem to fail to understand with the reception and box office this movie ended up with. This was not an either or situation. They could take a different approach, while still respecting the originals, and being really good.

Max Landis approach was different. Would that have been a good idea?

the movie looked like sht because the designs for everything are pretty horrendous. pity they pinned the hope for a franchise on a director, writer, and design team that had no idea on how to make this film a success. i think the actors (for the most part anyway) did fine.

I get why this movie has it's fans after watching it. The actors playing Billy, Jason, and Kim are good in this, Bill Hader's sarcastic Apha 5 is fun. They obviously wanted this to look like Chronicle and the Rangers finding the power coins directly evokes the scene in Chronicle where the kids first get their powers. The Breakfast Club is probably the other movie this is closest to, actually I don't think the director is all that interested in the superherosSci-fi elements so It's probably for the best we don't get much Ranger action here.

It was a perfectly decent movie, but I see zero point in a cheapo sequel where we still won't get much Power Rangers and the director is more effective with the high school/hanging out scenes anyway The thing this movie does best is create actual teenagers with attitude, unlike the show. 5.5/10. I'm glad I saw it once but won't go back to it I imagine.
