Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Actors gain weight for roles all the time but there is no way that Gaga would ever be able to pull something off close to this

I dont think her body frame would even support it. Unless they Ursula CGI.

Lol...no one's talking about her gaining weight. Ursula is a chalky skinned, octopus bodied broad. Fat suits, make up, and puppetry have existed for a long time in hollyweird.

And Hollywood is steering away from that kind of stuff, they are trying to be somewhat authentic so if they tried a fatsuit.....Disney have fun with that backlash.

They'd CG her before they'd do a fatsuit type thing. They may just make her skinny, Gaga ain't trying to get fat.

I'm sure someone would get mad as pointless outrage is the new black. Being mad at Gaga for putting on a suit to play an octopus creature is like being mad at Simon Pegg playing Unkar Plutt. Anyone upset over it pretty much needs a foot up the wazoo.

No reason to hire someone thin to play a bigger character unless it is cgi/motion capture. If it is all natural, no need regardless. She, just like Ariel have a human upperhalf.

No reason not to, either. If Oldman can play Churchill, someone can play this imaginary sea creature.

I would kill for Gaga to play Ursula. I’d need Poor Unfortunate Souls in mp3 form ASAP!

That would be pretty cool actually. But I would miss seeing a chunky Ursula so much.

Didn’t they get Demi Lovato to sing let it go for the frozen soundtrack? Maybe they could do that for this? Get a large and in charge actress for Ursula and then get Gaga to do a cover which would snatch everyone’s wigs

She would sound incredible. She would LOOK incredible. But she would not be Ursula.

She could be mocap as Ursula and then Gaga in her normal body as Vanessa. Or Ursula is more like her sister from the sequel. Either or, it’d be great to see!

My guess is that the sea witch won't be fat in this version. It'll be a new take on the character, like Kevin Kline's Maurice wasn't exactly like the animated version.

This movie might end up more like a new version of the story rather than simply a live action version of the animated movie. The sea witch might not even be named Ursula.

This, except I seriously doubt they'd change Ursula's name. Why are some of you so up in arms about Ursula possibly not being fat as if Disney hasn't been changing things around in their live action adaptations all along? They made Kaa female in The Jungle Book, they aged up Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, etc.

I'd still rather a thinner Ursula played by someone talented like Lady Gaga than for them to double down on the accuracy and cast someone like Kirstie Alley in the role. :o

To mo-cap someone to be fat. No. Just stop.
I mean I feel like she’ll be mocap to a point as she’s octopus from the chest down. She could be slightly larger too but not “fat”. Either way, mocap will be involved and will push the Ursula to look more sea creature like and less human.

WHen did Lady Gaga become the only actress in the world who could do the part justice? Kirstie Alley is a Golden Globe/Emmy Award winning actress in her own right. Hell someone like Kathy Bates would be great, get a drag queen who can act.

Because we have enough thin villains in the world. Ursula is one of the very few bigger villains in Disney.

I don’t think it’s at all problematic to cast a skinny actress (like Gaga) to play a character who’s traditionally overweight. If someone finds that offensive, then they’re over sensitive. And that’s coming from a very liberal man.

EDIT: The poster above me reminded me that the ideal choice for Ursula (at least in my opinion) would be a man.

I personally don't care if she's fat or not. I just don't agree with the idea that a fat suit or even motion capture where the character ends up fat is somehow wrong. It's like saying motion capturing the dude who played Beast was wrong. But skinny, fat, thick as hell with a figure 8, or any other octopus-lady shape they decide on...cool. My interest in this movie amounts to maybe watching it at home eventually, like Jungle Book (the only one of these remakes I've seen so far).

It's all about representation. Just like it would be problematic if they cast Gaga and then put her in a fat suit instead of finding a bigger actress. Just like POC are constantly having to fight for roles, actresses who arent a size 0 and who are considered big have to fight for roles even the ones that are made for em.

It's such a shame that the art of, well art in movie making is lost due to progressive wannabes. The notion that an actor cannot don prosthetics to play a larger built character is ridiculous - skinny people are taking the jobs of fat people nonsense.

Gaga would bring a twisted, weird take on the character, with an amazing voice, plus, she is hot right now.

"you know, i feel sorry for real mermaids that lost out on the role of arial'.... geez - it's called acting, where people portray characters infront of an audience

I’m a POC. Let me tell you right now that there’s a world of difference between people of color and overweight actors as far as representation is concerned.

Yes, of course overweight actors should be given the same opportunities as their skinnier counterparts, and I certainly wouldn’t object to casting a larger man or woman to play the part, but there’s also nothing wrong with using makeup or a fat suit to achieve the same effect if the best actor for the role happens to be skinny. Gary Oldman literally just did it and I think he won an Oscar for it.

It’s fine.
