Man of Steel 2 News and Speculation

That’s BS that they don’t want to devote time & money into the character. We have Krypton and Metropolis on the way and Supergirl is still airing. It’s clear they still see the Superman property as one they are willing to invest in. Just when it comes to the films the last few attempts haven’t been universally successful so they may take some time but I guarantee you that Superman will be back on the big screen. They may just want to wait to reboot.

A scenario I can see is Jurassic World is a blockbuster and JA Bayona is asked to meet with WBs. He gets to pick a project and he chooses Superman.

Someone like Vaughn of Bayona would make it happen. I don't know if they have talked with Bayona. But WB needs to be pushed. I think your best hope in the short term is Vaughn. If he makes us his mind right now and tells them he wants to make MOS 2 then it gets moving. Otherwise, they've been taking a wait and see approach. They haven't even commissioned scripts. At least they haven't as of late last year.

Maybe the director is the priority. If I'm not mistaken, Matt Reeves is completely redoing the Batman script.

There is a couple of ways. You can hire a screenwriter, have the script being written and make a shortlist of directors. Or you can hire a director and have them shepherd the script.

I just don't know how they feel about the film right now. I've discussed MOS 2 with a source in the past and it seemed like they weren't actively pushing forward with it unless someone came along and pushed it forward for them. That might have changed but I don't know.

Which might mean something to me if the former two weren't prequels set before he even entered the picture and the other didn't just have him as a guest star on a few episodes. Not to mention that they're TV shows and not movies.

I prefer Bayona right now. But I'm hoping the holding pattern is because they're giving Vaughn time to think it over and make a decision.

It’s irrelevant that they are, they’re still Superman properties. In any case Krypton is very focused on Superman anyway. The whole plot revolves around him. End of the day TV or Movies it doesn’t matter. The fact they have two Superman properties in development and the Supergirl Tv show currently proves that they are not abandoning the character at all.

I want Vaugh mostly but Bayona seems to love the character so I’d be down for him too.

I don't think WB is going to give up on a superman sequel. I actually think the fact that there are 2 more superman related shows in the pipeline is a good thing because it can help regenerate interest in the character. There have been constant rumors that they do want a sequel and fans responded extremely well to the new look superman from justice league. But with wb seemingly in a transition period it may be a while before we get an announcement. Although I have a sneaking suspicion we're getting a hand full of SDCC announcements of directors/dates/titles.

True. They wouldn't be doing the shows if they thought interest in Superman was totally dead. And as you say if they turn out really well they will by themselves help regenerate interest.

If anything it seems like Warner Bros are more interested in the characters and mythology of Superman's world than the character himself.

I honestly don't even view the Metropolis show as a Superman related property since it has nothing to do with him directly, whereas Krypton at least deals with Adam Strange trying to protect superman from being erased from existence.

Until a Director and a release date is announced for a sequel, this film should might as well be listed as being in development hell.

Metropolis may not be about superman directly but it's going to generate interest in Lex and Lois, and probably a bunch of villains. With superman not being in the show, absence will make the heart grow fonder I think. It's about giving people an appetizer for superman until they can prepare the main course.

The only reasons we aren’t getting Superman on his own show are because they have this stupid rule with using specific characters on TV hence why we never see Batman on TV unless it’s a prequel (Gotham) or the reason Deathatroke has been pulled from the Arrowverse. The other reason is simple they’ve had many Superman TV shows where he has been the lead so they won’t be wanting to repeat themselves. Metropolis and Krypton are ways for them to use the product without having to use the big guy. It’s got nothing to do with them not thinking he’s worthy or bankable.

Could mean absolutely nothing or something, it's up to you to decide but Amy was seen inside Meltdown comic book shop in LA today. And she ain't no comic book reader.

Hmm, like maybe there's a script been worked on based off a certain comic book arc and she's researching :cwink:

Somebody mentioned this before but maybe something is announced for the 80th anniversary in April.

How awesome would that be? Seriously though I don’t think WBs are that smart.

TIL that AA is more famous for 'Disney Princess' than LL, smh.

Yeah. I know. WB probably doesn't even know it's his 80th anniversary. I believe the third MOS trailer debuted near his 75th anniversary but that was probably a coincidence. I'm grasping at straws.

Grasp away haha I would love for them to announce something there.

I actually don’t want Patty on Superman. Not saying she wouldn’t make a good movie but I’m not convinced she could handle the action.

I think she could. The No Man's Land sequence wasn't all second-unit direction. And any weakness in the action sequences would be made up by Patty's direction and the final script.

I think Vaughn is in a holding pattern, he's mulling doing a MOS sequel but I think he is leaning towards a third Kingsman movie. (He said in one interview he already has a treatment and some dialogue written for a third film.) The main thing holding up Vaughn from deciding which to do is Fox's merger with Disney... and I doubt he wants to do a PG-13 Kingsman 3.

As for Bayona, he probably wants a breather after finishing JW:FK before his next project. And Universal might have a sequel clause on him for a third JW film. But I think he prefers a finished script for a film he's mulling before deciding whether or not to commit. And his ideas for a MOS sequel may not quite fit with WB's vision, but if JW:FK makes $1 billion for Universal again, WB will likely let him have creative freedom.

I've soured on Vaughn a bit because I think if he wants to do a Superman film so much than at some point you either commit to it or stop talking about what you would do.

I get the sense Bayona is more flexible overall. Certainly more so than Vaughn. The biggest difference as I see it would be you need to have a script written for Bayona where Vaughn would most likely at least co-write a script.

I'm starting to think that the people behind all these shows and what not feel Superman is the least interesting person in his own universe.

Vaughn writes his stuff with Jane Goldman as well.

So he could be negotiating with Fox to get his last Kingsman movie underway before the merger is completed? Or he could be asking for a clause to allow creative freedom if his film comes out after the merger? He's probably on the backfoot negotiation wise after the Kingsman 2 performance.

Without Millar I kinda worry about the dynamics of his team, if he gets the job.

I think Patty was rumored for JL2, like Mark Hughes was throwing the idea out and he said it's not just his pure speculation

Jane Goldman is his cowriter in general but when it comes to Superman, Vaughn seems to rely on Millar for plot ideas. In one interview it makes it sound like Vaughn was asked to do Superman and he contacted Millar again and Millar was committed to another project. Vaughn has general ideas about Superman but any specific plot seems reliant on Millar who is tied up for a while. Goldman is a writing partner but I don't know if she's someone who would necessary come up with a chunk of the Superman plot. I thought about using Johns as a replacement for Millar if Vaughn can't come up with a story.
