Man of Steel 2 News and Speculation

Jane Goldman is his cowriter in general but when it comes to Superman, Vaughn seems to rely on Millar for plot ideas. In one interview it makes it sound like Vaughn was asked to do Superman and he contacted Millar again and Millar was committed to another project. Vaughn has general ideas about Superman but any specific plot seems reliant on Millar who is tied up for a while. Goldman is a writing partner but I don't know if she's someone who would necessary come up with a chunk of the Superman plot. I thought about using Johns as a replacement for Millar if Vaughn can't come up with a story.

I think Johns will be involved as a story writer for future DCCU films going forward since he was integral to WW and Aquaman's scripts. (The only outlier is Shazam, but he's still producing that one.) If Vaughn decides to commit, he, Goldman and Johns will hash out a treatment. Then Vaughn and Goldman can write the proper script.

It's possible that WB already has a writer for a MOS sequel, but they're keeping it hush-hush until they can get a shortlist of directors.

Back In November Roven said there was no script but various story ideas were being kicked around. I spoke to a person at WB in the past and there was no script. That might have changed. But it would have been a more recent development.

Ya I thought about a Vaughn/Goldman/Johns combo as well, with Johns having the same role as he did with WW, which was I think Story ideas, script draft and characterization guidance

Did Millar work on First Class?

Millar did not work on First Class.

I wonder if this film even has a release date in mind or even the right writing team to truly make this a sequel worth watching

Ah that's cool, I liked First Class, I was worried that when he is without Millar he's only capable of Kingsman 2

The development of First Class is a bit muddled. Sheldon Turner got a story credit because elements of his X-Men Magneto prequel was supposedly used even though I believe Vaughn claimed he never read it. Singer wrote a treatment and a script was developed off of that and then rewritten by Zack Stenz and Ashley Miller. Singer dropped out of directing. Vaughn was hired and rewrote the script with Jane Goldman.

Uh, thanks for the history lesson.

So they could potentially get Johns to write a treatment, and Vaughn/Goldman could do a re-write on it, with Johns making sure there are no WTF moments =P

I'd like to see either Black Adam (with a later Superman assist from Shazam) or Brainiac (with an Superman assist from Supergirl) as the general plot for MoS2; they're all characters that could do with being in the DCEU.

On the BOF Vlog Mario Robles claims that WBs are in talks with Cavill over a new contract because they want to secure him as Superman for the foreseeable future.

Great if true. Extending his contract would be the first step to actually committing to MOS 2.

Lol Mario was getting hammered by "Debbie Downers" combined.

So if true, WB is negotiating with both a director and Cavill right now?

Those Debbie Downers really don't get that giving Sup a role in Shazam means they're keeping him relevant for future projects, otherwise they could have just left Cavill on the bench and let it fade away...and as long as you make great movies - shared universe or not, GA will come and the brand will become strong.

Continuing with Post credit scenes for LOD means if solo movies work for the next 3 years and fans/GA are interested in LOD, they could pull the trigger on a JL sequel and get it done efficiently rather than see Marvel make a Thunderbolt movie and repeat the Avengers effects/playing catch up again. if bonus scenes are not resonating or is causing negative buzz, they could just throw the idea away.

They have option of continuing with 3 potential stories for the next cross-over movie (JL 2?)

1. LoD.

2. Darkseid Invasion (may avoid that for obvious reasons)

3. Injustice story. (if they want to take risks, lol.)

If I were them I'd be planning LOD, Flashpoint and Darkseid invasion over the next 10 years.

Tease LOD and if all is well then release that 2021 etc, Flashpoint sign up Zemeckis after he finishes whatever his next project is post end of 2018, and release that 2023 etc, Darkseid invasion to finish the series and have farewell solo movies for key characters

I think I’d like to see one more go at a Metropolis-based story. Now that Superman is back (and presumably back at the DP — I think they should just go with it), I think it’d be great to actual build up the fundamentals of the character and his core world. I’ve said before that I prefer Intergang (perhaps a bit like the Injustice-like Superman “storm troopers” from the Knightmare), but I think that’d be a change of pace from Zod, Doomsday and Steppenwolf. A threat like Intergang could still tie directly to a super powered villain.

What do you mean by Legion of Doom? Because I was thinking an adaptation of the Justice graphic novel would be an excellent follow-up to Justice League and fit with the themes of Snyder’s films. I’m not sure 2021 would be enough time to set a story up, however. I’d want at least one Superman film and one Flash film before a JL 2/LOD, and I don’t see those coming out before 2021.

Flashpoint would definitely be interesting (but I’d want Red Son Superman and President Luthor rather than Superman’s Flashpoint version). Darkseid should definitely still be on the table, and I’d want a Green Lantern film to at a minimum set up the wider New Gods conflict.

Bill annoys me, he can’t even look at it objectively. WBs want a shared universe but because he doesn’t he sees ways for it to not be the case.

But I like Rick, friends with him on Facebook he’s a really nice guy.

I think they’ll keep on teasing the Legion of Doom. If the movies start doing better and some villains really hit with audiences then they’ll do the Legion of Doom vs Justice League.

Maybe they can do it where the league didn’t stay together after the first film. Treating JL vs LOD as a sort of soft reboot where the JL team ups are talked of like a myth or legend. Then they reunite when to defeat their villains United.

Cool.

They're supposedly putting post credit scenes to tease LOD from here on, so if they do it for JL, AM, Shazam, ?SS2, WW2....so do they need to tease for more than 4-5 films? or is that enough to gauge the reactions and if they're happy with it at the end of 2019 or early 2020 then they can get cracking on it for a 2021/2022 release.

It looks like Flash is definitely shooting this year or next year, and apparently MOS2 is supposed to be announced in mid-year, so hopefully we get those before LOD/Flashpoint etc

THR just changed Flashpoint to "the Flash film" in their article

A GL film before Darkseid/New Gods would be nice

Bill just wrote another annoyed piece lol. He never considered that maybe some directors are fans too and love the easter eggs or cross overs that enhances the stories. Rick is ok though he was like all doom and gloom about Cavill/JL after the OW haha, calm down Rick, the legs were fine, it's not a GL/Catwoman situation.

I'd love to see JL as a myth but they kinda exposed themselves with selfies/autograph sessions at the end of JL =P I guess LOD teaming up forcing the league reunite again for another mission? I imagined a Cap 1 like bonus scene showing extended Avengers teaser, this time with LOD doing extensive damage, then show each JL member responding and ready to go, then tease the release date etc :hmr:

I really like him in the role. So long as audiences feel the same way that's great news!

I honestly don't think WB wants to devote significant amounts of time and money to the character anymore. In twenty years' time and untold millions of dollars' expense, all they've gotten to show for all of that is a misguided sequel to the previous Superman film franchise and a reboot that wasn't even able to ignite a new one and essentially reduced him to second-banana status in subsequent films. Those are not results that I'd consider conducive to wanting to keep throwing time and money at trying to make a new stand-alone Superman movie.

Sadly I think this could very well be the case - I just hope the rumour about Cavill's new contract negotiation is true.

Yes this should be a standalone sequel

I really like Cavill in the role also. Hope either Vaughn or Boyea have a great take on the character that’s a love letter to DC fans. I just want a Superman film that celebrates everything we love about this character without being ashamed of him and his 80year history. A director that wants to embrace him and totally immersed in the source material instead making him into space Jesus.
Also people say that he is too powerful for an relatable story - but I’ve observed that Snyder didn’t make this Supes omnipotent as he said in one of his interviews that his Superman couldn’t just fly to the moon! I think they scaled Cavill down compared to Reeve .

We're relying a lot on Robles who may or may not be right. No major trades mention MOS 2 in their articles about the upcoming DCEU slate. Collider mentioned Vaughn and MOS 2 way back in March 2017.

Seeing Brainiac from Syfy’s Krypton makes me sad that well never see him go toe to toe with the Man of Steel
