Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 10

I've seen posts like the above from 'so called critics' umpteen times, and the conclusion I come to is a simple one in relation to CBM...snobbery. The CBM is beneath there high brow sense and sensibilities...completely beneath them.

I think we are taking this too far the other way now. Look at the reviews for TDK, Iron Man, The Avengers to name just a few. In fact most comic book movies are fresh on RT.

I don't think critics are overly harsh on comic book films in particular. I do think that some critics were taken back by the more serious tone of MOS and might have been a little harsher because of it.

I think it's a matter of too high an expectations. The smallest disappointment with superman translate to fail. Both mos n wwz have the same grade but wwz came with low expectations n thus passes

With MOS, a lot of it came down to being compared to Superman: The Movie, the granddaddy of all superhero movies. MOS should have just been reviewed in a bubble, as if S:TM never existed. I read critics complaining they had to sit through the origin again, so right off the bat the critic is displeased because of this. And when reviewers believe everything was done so perfectly in S:TM, MOS has quite the hill to climb.

Exactly. Just look at some of the posters in this thread, that just because he is Superman he should have done at least $400M domestic. You can't win with those kinds of expectations.

I laughed and shook my head at some of those posts earlier.

Seriously, what happened to Tobiased? I miss his posts/rants.

Perhaps he realized that by July 8th, 25 days since MOS was released, its domestic BO total will be flirting with $275 Million, his newest revised estimate of what he thinks it will top out at. He's busy trying to formulate a plausible negative spin for this accomplishment, and why he was right all along!

True. Irrelevant to comic book fans. But that is only a small fraction of the ga going to watch the movie.

You are correct. A strong minded person 'comic lover or not' will see a cbm for what it is...good entertainment value, nothing more, nothing less.

Beautiful answer.

I don't use critics choice.
I don't agree with their scores, they gave green lantern a 62% and Returns an 89%
Both which were disappointing movies, that IMO don't deserve those scores.

Rottin tomatoes gave pirhanna 3d like a 76, so what do you use?

:funny: *Borat voice* Great success!

Wow, yea, 73% from the critics but an audience rating of 44%, go figure.

I will say, at least I can take solace in the audience ratings being positive for MOS compared to the critics.

It's funny how most of the conservative posts here regarding the BO numbers were flamed initially, yet have been proven to be the most accurate. And guess what? Those posters still get flamed.

Posters once saying that $700 WW is the absolute floor and that 900 is more realistic are now saying "600 WW what a huge success!!!"

I agree. Expectations were enormously high given that Nolan was producing and frankly because comic book movies had been well received lately. I mean good grief, Captain America and Thor were solid films and received great reviews. Now you take an icon like Superman, match him up with TDK creators, give it a great budget and promise dynamite action....who wouldn't expect the movie to take off?

But poor WOM and bad reviews can hurt a film. I think what we're seeing for the most part is that there is huge interest in the character. People were going to go see this movie no matter what. But poor WOM prevented some repeat business. Its not only critics who didn't like the film, a lot of fans and moviegoers felt the same way.
