Yes PickleWeasel, in real life there are films and characters within those films that inspire people. I thought everyone already knew this, but obviously there are 10 people who are discovering this for the first time :wow:

There's a difference between an inspirational film and a life-saving film.

There's a difference between an inspirational film and a life-saving film.

There is no doubt that a depressed or suicidal person can be saved by the inspiration of a film/character. Given how few decent characters there are in everyday life, a film would be more likely to inspire than a friend/family (not in all cases, but in many). In fact a lot of people overlook the greatness of their parents and take them for granted, or are blinded by petty conflicts. They don't realize their own family are inspirations. They then turn to fictional characters in books or film. Some people actually model themselves on characters.

The more I see that GIF, the more I wonder what exactly Ledger is doing with his mouth. It looks like he's chewing gum, but I'm pretty sure he's not.

I think that the potential for goodness in human beings is far more significant than the negative personality traits (greed, selfishness, narcissism) that are glorified in our celebrity-obsessed media culture.

That's precisely one of the reasons why I loved MOS so much. Chris Nolan's Batman films sometimes seemed pessimistic, but in MOS, Jor-El explicitly talks about the human potential for greatness and how his son can help show the way. I think that's something we really need in this day and age, when too many people only see darkness and despair in the world around them.

Back to the box office. People have talked about the huge role of Japan and Brazil and how $700 million is virtually assured at this point, but I was wondering if any of the knowledgeable box office experts in this thread might be able to shed some light on exactly how that breaks down. How much do you expect MOS to gross overall in those two countries, respectively?

I think some people are looking at ASM return in Japan and Brazil and extrapolating which is fair enough with Brazil but Spider-Man has a cultural history with Japan hence the huge BO return in Japan.

Japan
ASM - 39m
Avengers - 45m
TDKR - 24m

ASM was 6m behind the biggest superhero movie off all time and 15m ahead of the highly anticipated final Nolan Batman.

I'm thinking it would probably be a mistake to assume MOS can get ASM numbers in Japan given that Spidey is especially popular in that country - but that Supes will still put up an admirable performance overall.

I'm not particularly sure of Japan's relation to superman fandom? but extrapolating from those numbers I'm thinking $20m high-end in Japan.

I'm assuming TDKR benefited from following TDK and of course being marketed as the end of a trilogy there as it did in most other places. Aspects MoS won't have really.

Granted that I am nothing close to an expert when it comes to box office numbers, but I still feel like you're lowballing it a bit, Bruce. If a pure reboot like ASM can make almost $40 million, I feel that MOS could make at least $25 million, probably closer to 30.

Are the Brazil numbers so far pretty much in line with expectations? I was wondering how the ongoing protests might affect box office results.

Yeah like I said I don't see any particular reason MoS would make more than TDKR there. As has been mentioned a few times spider-man is a very popular character in Japan and has been for decades.

The avengers was a global phenomena everywhere and had the Marvel build-up.

Admittedly, I have absolutely no reason to say MOS will do better other than the fact that I like Superman more than Spider-Man and Batman, so you're probably right. :yay:

It would be nice if the movie surpassed ASM numbers in terms of total WW box office results, but I'm not holding my breath. $700 million+ would make me perfectly happy at this point.

MOS has the most spectacular action ever seen in a superhero film. So now that countries like Brazil and Japan have received word of how opposite MOS is to Superman Returns/BatmanTrilogy/Spiderman, I think it will benefit at the box office as people try to catch a glimpse of the Kryptonian high-wire act. That's the advantage of having your film being released later in some countries.

If Tobias ever does get back on I hope he read that Snyder and Cavill will both be at the 75th Anniversary for Superman at Comic Con and that sources say they will either be giving details about whether or not WB is going to shoot MOS2 first or go ahead and do JLA. Also they could be giving details about whether or not Batman, Flash, or WW will be getting the green light.

I think it's been pretty much all but officially confirmed by Warner Bros. that MOS 2 will be shot before a JL film. Hell, even Snyder mentioned on how the most ridiculous rumor that he's heard was how people think that a JL film is going to come out soon since it's nowhere near being ready to go into a pre-production stage, especially when compared to how much faster Warner Bros. would be able to get a MOS 2 off the ground.

Agreed. MOS2 will be the stepping stone to either WF and WF could be the tone set for JL. :word: Or atleast that's what I'd like to think!

I think a WF movie could beat Avatars numbers. The JLA movie would be awesome but lets not kid ourselves as to who fans would be going to see. Batman/Superman are the IT factor. I would love to see Flash and WW but WF would top a JLA movie.

Does anyone remember the billboard in I Am Legend? They might have been on to something...

:funny:

You said that with the 3D boost & inflation, TDK would have grossed around Avengers money. It turns out that the Avengers sold more tickets domestically. Internationally it is not even a competition. You might be high-balling WF a little too much as well.

If they could have got Bale's Batman and Cavill's Superman, it would do Avengers numbers. Bale's Batman got on the good side of the public the same way RDJ's Iron Man did. But that isn't happening so who knows.

Who is rumored to be the next batman actor? I guess they could put anyone in that mask. Bruce Wayne is the character that needs an actual actor.
