Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

Tracking usually underestimates superhero movies.

I think the only exception since Avengers was TDKR.

Trust me when I say this, Man of Steel will erase that bad feeling you got with Superman Returns. The movie is completely different compared to SR. There is incredible action

*SPOILER* although it takes a while for the action to arrive because the film starts off a bit morbid and gloomy/depressing but NOT dark. Just more like what am I doing here? Where do I go? What do I do? Etc.

You speak as if you have already seen the flim?

Course tracking overestimated STID. Not exactly a superhero film but still.

I'm not ready to buy into these numbers. I've upped my OW from 90 - 95 to 95 - 100.

But I'd love significantly north of 100. If MOS does 600 million it means one JL and maybe two. Henry is signed for just 3 films. I really want at least 1 MOS sequel and that would probably happen only if MOS performs well above 600 million.

After reviewing Inception's numbers, I feel MOS can make the same of not more OS. I think it will beat or come very close to the 293m Inception made domestic as well. Nolan and his reputation are known world wide. Also Inception was #1 for 3 weeks with competition from Salt, Cats and Dogs 2, and Ramona & Beezus. 2 of those being kid friendly family movies. It also contended with Sorcerer Apprentice. Maybe not MU quality but enough competition and still remain #1. It made over 500m OS and with MOS being a huge anticipated movie it can as well

I noticed that too. Adds credibility to his saying he has industry contacts. I knew some folks outside WB have seen the film. Jim Lee for one. All that has been said of his viewing is that he cried 3 times during the film.

Speaking of special screenings I wonder if Routh, Welling, Christopher, Newton and Cain will be invited to the LA premier which Henry will attend?

My box office predictions for this movie are a minimum of 550 and max of inception numbers. If this movie lives up to the hype the trailers and tv spots have created, its going to destroy and essentially making MU a non factor. The Legs and WOM will be insane, those who had doubts will go and see it and the multiple views of the movie will also be high. But the most important thing for me is that it successfully relaunches the superman franchise and paves way to a DCU.

I gotta be honest. I will be signing off MOS boards and not reading reviews or watching tracking after today. Not that reviews will be bad or tracking will be bad but, I want peace of mind going into seeing MOS.

I will be too stressed if for the 2 week before I am looking at the latest review or BO prediction. My memories of what happened with SR are still fresh. Don't want to go through that again - and I am not saying it will happen again. I just want peace of mind going into the theatre and to enjoy the film.
You should hang around and watch the reviews and tracking numbers go up, UP, and AWAY.
Course, I dont blame you, a little crowe would taste bad.

In order for MOS to-as you put it, destroy and making MCU a non factor-a couple of things needs to happen. One, the movie will do something that breaks new ground, like the Avengers did with combining five different franchises and starting a coherent movie universe, and two, it needs to make more dough than the Avengers, practically making it either number one, or two most succesfull movie of all time.So let's say, more than two billion dollars on profits? THAT would make TA and MCU in general a non factor...

In short...not going to happen:oldrazz:

In other news, i do think that you guys are under predicting this movie.Comparing it to other reboot such as BB and IM2 is not really a good comparison. Those two movies didn;t really had any big names attached to it.Big names like Nolan and Snyder. Even the most casual movie goers will recognize Nolan as his name is now synonimous with the succes of the bat franchise. Same can be said about Snyder. I do think that people still remember 300...

On a more personal note, i think MOS will be one of the better CB movie coming out this year...and this coming from a hardcore Marvel fan.

I think he was talking about Monsters University :woot:

Wait what? You've seen it?

No, at my relatively young age I've had 2 serious health scares that have shot my nerves, I don't put myself under stressful conditions if I can help it.

I hope and expect the reviews to be good and that that will push up tracking estimates. That Trevor guy better do an honest review. He was down on SR and as I recall - it seemed he didn't like the character. Hope he at least goes in with an open mind.

I want to go into MOS calm, not worrying about reviews, ready to drink it all in. Like S:TM was to my dad - magic, I fully expect MOS to be magic to me. My dad tells me how the audience stood and erupted in cheers when Supes said to Lois "I've got you" and she replied "Whose got you"?! I fully expect similar moments in MOS.

Indeed, I probably won't look at BO numbers for MOS until August when it's all sort of settled with the late Asian premiers. After today I am out of here for months. Not totally a bad thing cause I get the feeling I may have overstayed my welcome here in recent days - especially with one person in particular.

I am hopeful we are on the verge of a rebirth of the most iconic fictional character of all time. In film, comics and how about graphic novels. Bats gets a ton. Supes not many though he has had some great ones like All Star Superman. There are so many great stories still to tell and so much more to do - like a serious effort to make the Lex/Clark relationship that of Cain and Abel. The stuff of legends. As was done so well in Smallville. And now that WB/DC has won the rights to Superboy, as well as Superman (pending a SCOTUS appeal which legal experts say will be rejected) DC needs to re-establish the scenario of Smallville where Clark and Lex grow up together and as defacto brothers. It adds so much to the mythos.

Tobias: MOS FB page will soon pass 700K likes. I guess that is the sign that the advertising is paying off :)

If Inception can get $800 mill from TDK hype then MOS can get $700 mill from TDK trilogy hype. :yay:
And don't say it's because of Leo because not all of his movies do THAT well (e.g. the great gatsby). Inception did well because of Nolan's popularity after TDK.

And of course it was an awesome movie so WOM was great.

Yes, Inception was powered by Nolans name, fresh off TDK. It was also a clean slate, in that it had no baggage.

Supes on the other hand (aside from the fact Nolan isn't making this film, the marketing won't fool everyone), has a hell of a lot of baggage. A stigma that's very deeply engrained in pop culture. That's the main hurdle MoS has to overcome, IMO.

It might take a minute for audiences to catch up, particularly the overseas crowd.

Man of steel will beat it domestically and overseas.

As some have mentioned i can see it beating the $260m+ domestic for TASM but overtaking the $490m os it made would be pretty unprecedented for a superman film.

To overtake the total it would have to really exceed expectation either domestically or os.

I'm outta here till August.

Final predictions:

275 domestic/325 OS. 600 million total.

If reviews are very good, add 10% to that number.

So bottom line 600 million WW.

With good reviews 660 million WW.

I pray, I really do, that I am low-balling this.

I know I'm pegged as a pessimist by some and a hater by one or two.

I am neither.

Let's all do the obvious - look up into the sky....... and believe that a man can fly.

Finally, thank you all for putting up with my posts.

Your overestimating the stigma. He's not aquaman.

The marketing will still fool some people.

I sense negativity...hmmm...

It's hilarious how your OW/WW projections have been getting higher and higher, and yes most of us do take you for a pessimist (maybe borderline troll-ish) lol! Sounds like you are trying to give yourself some wiggle room if it opens massive. Can I ask why you are departing this thread?? Why don't you come back early next week when the reviews will likely be out, and perhaps you'll revise it again.

If I had to be pinned down to an OW figure without seeing any legitimate reviews, my guess is somewhere between TDK and Avengers. Is that too high? Maybe, but imo it's not beyond the realm of possibility. I certainly can't see how it possibly opens under a $100 million like you have predicted though.

As I posted above this is why I am signing out:

Well I wish you well with any health issues you are having. Your health is certainly worth more to you, your friends and your family than a movie. BTW. My estimate could be off way more than yours. It doesn't matter though it's just an educated guess based on my gut feeling. If I'm wrong it won't be the first time, and certainly won't be the last. :yay:

i think 600M is good. IM1 only did 585M n considered as huge success.

LOL...well, in that case, i'll have to apologize to the guy! he's right it's going to destroy monster university, no doubt.

You underestimate the power of Pixar my friend. Man of Steel should have a solid second weekend, but it will be in second place.

Ha, my lunch mates have no idea there is a new superman coming out in the next 2 weeks!!! They have not even watched any of the trailers!!! They saw the new kiosks at the shopping mall court promoting superman stuffs and went puzzled. Lol

I think the idea is JL next if MOS does 600 million.

600 mil PFFTTTT are you that much of an imbecile or just a hater that you think thats all this movie will make. What a joke.

800 mil min an you can quote me on that.
