Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

Don't you know that predicting anything less than a billion means that you are lowballing it!

Let's just predict 1.6 billion. There's a ton of hype. Plus it's obviously going to open with at least 150M OW. Screw logic!

That is my favorite Batman film and has a 85% RT which IMO should be higher. That compared to a 92% or 95% RT rating? It's not a big difference.

Once you're in that 90 status, you've entered the Spider-Man 2, Iron Man and TDK territory.

That separates yourself from the pack.

Are SuperFans (or is there another more accepted term for fans of Superman above all other comic book characters, like "Trekkers" for Star Trek fans?) relieved or disappointed that the marketing campaign for the movie MAN OF STEEL in 2013 has not been overwhelming like what the movie BATMAN received in 1989?

I'm old enough to remember seeing that bat-symbol (and Jack Nicholson) everywhere during that spring/summer. Every other billboard and commercial seemed like it was directing you that Michael Keaton movie. You could not escape BatMania. The excitement was so high in part b/c it had been 20 years since there had been a live-action version of Batman (Adam West in the final season of the BATMAN tv show in 1969). Absence made the heart grow fonder and insatiable.

But here and now in 2013, personally, I'm relieved. I would be disappointed in the perceived lack of marketing (until this past week) for MAN OF STEEL if it hadn't been for the wafting stink SUPERMAN RETURNS left in its dour wake in 2006. If MAN OF STEEL was the first Superman movie since 1987's SUPERMAN IV - THE QUEST FOR PEACE, and there was this gigantic 26 year gap between Kal-El's screen appearances (instead of a not-so-gigantic 7 year gap), then I'd be crazy disappointed in the marketing for this movie. I'd want SuperMania to sweep the world.

Now I just want the world to give Superman a fair chance.

TDK is a better movie overall, but you want The Avengers on top because you don't classify TDK as a CBM, rather a crime drama.

Does that make MOS more of an alien invasion movie rather than a CBM?

Does that make Captain America more of a war hero movie than a CBM?

Dude, I have seen more COMIC BOOK in Man of Steel TV Spots than I ever did in Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Are you kidding me? There are comic book references, lines, shots, hell even homages to old Alex Ross designs of Supes. Never saw Captain America, no desire to so I cannot comment on it. Nolan's Batman essentially is a crime saga. It's not a true Batman film or CBM for that matter. They couldn't even pronounce Ra's al Ghul's name correctly

That's the dream but that probably isn't what WB ultimately has their eyes on. They've been flirting with WF/JL for how long now? Not a peep on other DC characters. GL? Ugh. It's ridiculous that there has been no Flash movie, though. I would love to see it happen. Sadly, I think if MoS does well, on one hand you either introduce new characters/go with a Superman sequel or you go with an ensemble film from the get go. I'd love to see an MoS sequel first sadly but as far as business goes, I don't think that will happen before a WF/JL film especially since TA 2 is on the way.
Maybe, but I cant see them jumping straight into a JL film. Too much of a risk with the public. We know the characters, but they dont.
I can see a WF film happening way before a JL film.
I think first, MoS 2 ( maybe a mention of, or a cameo by, the new Batman in it?)
a WF film. ( cameos or mentions of other heroes throughout)
a team up film or two ( pick your poison, MM and flash, or WW and GL?)
then a JL film.

something similar to that is how I hope it gos.

I'm sure you'll agree, SolarWorlder, that if MOS makes anywhere between 550-700M WW that it'll be considered a success.

That's the spirit now you can come work for me at a major studio. We need more people like this

Well, one thing can be confirmed and do not read this unless you don't care about minor spoilers anyway its NOT that big of a spoiler, kind of expected but...

There is a mention of Wayne Enterprises via a sat dish in the film that gets destroyed by Zod.

You haven't seen the movie. Any predictions you have on the movie are solely based off other people's opinions on it and yourself seeing advertisements.

Trailer and TV spots don't mean anything. They're biased. Meaning they want to show the money shots and build anticipation. Get the emotions going to get people pumped for the movie. The "Fate of Your Planet" trailer really got me going on this movie. Especially after his line towards the end where he says something like, "I won't betray them." and then the music gets going and we get see Snyder in his niche.

Wait until you see the movie OW, then claim it to make over 800M. Claiming that right now is arrogantly premature, that's my only argument with what you're saying.

If anything has a chance of unseating Iron Man 3 as the movie of the summer, it's Man of Steel, says Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations.

While it will have more competition than Iron Man 3 did, Bock expects Man of Steel to open with at least a $100 million weekend. He says audiences could expect to see five to 10 DC movies in the next decade if it reaches $300 million during its run and racks up a minimum of $750 million globally.

"That's a number that would say there's a lot of life in this character and in DC Comics in general," Bock adds. "This is the number that most of the Marvel films are going to easily hit. If you want to play in the leagues with those guys, you've got to equal those grosses."

Actually, I have seen the movie. Can't speak on it until embargo is lifted. It's basically a part of an agreement and I have known people to be fired easily and get hunted down for leaking information. TBH, I do figures for domestic only it's all fun and games when it comes to foreign and WW for me. My goal is on DOM totals. The fanboy in me says $150 million. The realistic choice is $110-$130 million somewhere in there and a $300-$330 million DOM haul.

150mil? Uh the movie is getting a 250mil opening weekend because everyone loves Superman. It easily should beat Avatar worldwide.

If WB was smart, and MoS scores big returns then yes, they should release individual films for their characters and be patient with a JL film I just can't picture that happening not with TA owning them and TA 2 breathing down their necks. They have to make a move on this and they screwed the pooch by riding Batman for 8 years.

I really think MoS deserves a sequel first even before any other character gets a movie :woot:

If you're figuring around 300M DOM you got some work to do OS if you wanna hit the 800M marker. Apparently the marketing on the other side of the world isn't that great for this movie so let's hope word of mouth is on MOS' side.

Now you're just making yourself look idiotic. Nobody can touch the God that is Cameron. Geez, man -- get a grip!

db85usa might just hire you if you keep that attitude up! :cwink:

Quite funny to read considering the last few pages.

I agree with these numbers. I also think it's overseas number is going to be huge. It all kind of hangs on how well the film is received and whether it's entertaining. Signs point to yes but we need that first batch of official reviews.

Avatar and Titanic, crazy to think about how much success that man has had in the BO. Too bad Snyder is going to blow him out of the water! (No pun intended with Titanic, obviously...) :woot:
