Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 3

MOS just went rotten. This could be bad. We haven't had a rotten CBM since GL?

For the well-known first-tier heroes/characters yes but Ghost Rider 2 (another Goyer screenplay) was released last year to 17% rating.

yeah I don't see it coming back, the forbes review and Richard Roeper's reviews still aren't up. To give people an example it was late, but Spider-man 3 was finally certified fresh by this point in time. Now that's a movie where the audience thought it was worse than the critics did, and this movie could well be the opposite, but just to give a point of reference. It's certainly not going to be certified fresh by release day which is bad.

See? I told you I hate cocky Snyder lol. I would've preferred someone like Matthew Vaughn or, wishful thinking, Darren Aronofsky to have helmed this film (since he was supposed to direct The Wolverine but backed out and the project was taken over by James Mangold). Snyder loves carnage and I hear this movie has lots of it and it contradicts Superman's motto to "protect all the innocents."

and yet didn't receive the coveted A cinemascore or A- for that matter. B+ is solid though and should do 20 ish million over the weekend.

CinemaScore doesn't mean a thing anymore. Every movie gets a B, B-, B+ even if they are bad.

I forgot about that disaster... Hopefully that gets a decent reboot one day. Poor Cage...

It just went back up to 60% and fresh. Lets hope it stays north of 59. If not, that "already green lighted" sequel will likely quietly join the Superman Returns sequel in the phantom zone.

Oh yeah I forgot that they announced a Superman Returns sequel too right? And they let Brandon Routh's contract expire and did not make it. So shall we take WB announcing a Man Of Steel sequel with a grain of salt?

I have seen the movie 4 times already, twice in IMAX. :D

That will all depend on the audience reaction. The Transformers franchise is critically abhorred, but the general audience keeps buying tickets so they keep making 'em.

Yep and the reason SR did not have a sequel is because the audience didn't like it as much as the critics did. If the audience like MOS it will all be fine, if not it won't.

I want to be fair, because I haven't seen the film yet. But I have not stake in seeing Snyder and Goyer on future projects. Goyer doesn't even like Superman and has publically said so.

How was the IMAX experience?

IMAX is really the way to go to enjoy these kind of movie, especially the original 70mm screen which is really immersive while watching!

btw, what's amazing with the box office record of Man of Steel in the Philippines is that not all cinemas showed the movie and it still earned a lot of money. In comparison, the largest cinema chain here showed IM3 literally in ALL of their cinemas on its first day.

But I gotta admit the destruction is a little bit tedious. But solid story. Surprisingly there doesnt have zack signature feature. The slow motion.

The Transformers franchise and Michael Bay are never expected to attract critic praise, so if and when any Transformer film gets a fresh review is just an added bonus. But to compare that to Man of Steel and use it as a scapegoat for the middling reviews is not fair since the trailers clearly force-fed us that this is a film from the director of 300 and Watchmen and guided by Nolan so naturally the expectations are huge, an RT rating of 85%-95%.

Clearly I am ranting here sorry lol but yeah it's in the hands of the audience now. And if and when a sequel is made they need to rethink and get another director. Just my two cents.

Yeah I guess i'll do the same reserve my final verdict when I see it. I will try to see it tomorrow if it's not raining too hard or Saturday.

He has also publicly said the opposite. He's also written JSA which isn't all that different. He's also championed many good superman TPB's such as the John's book. Seem's like a moot point.

1. Superman saves alot of people in this movies trailers alone, more people than most superhero movies not named spiderman.

2. Different versions of Superman stories present an unclear example of how this plays out. YES, in stories like Superman vs The Elite, superman goes out of his way to save even the most singular life, but that's almost literally what that particular story is about! Not to mention he has hundreds of super robots to help him out in that story AND he's far far more seasoned, I heard this story is about his first super fight...

A story like Superman Doomsday, yes Superman save's that one little girl at the end, perhaps at the cost of his own life. However how many buildings did he send Doomsday though to get to that point again? Even when he fought captain marvel of all people there were mass city damage. It really comes down to who he's fighting, if they are stronger than him it's not easy to pull the zero lives lost card. I'd say Zod and his gang qualifies.
It's not easy to present a character struggle at the scale of gods, where you have one person with enough spare time to fight with that sort of chosen handicap. Not impossible but difficult.

It comes down to how ruthless Superman is. Is he fighting like the punisher, Is he killing enemies left and right like Ironman and the Avengers....

...just seems unfair once more.

As I've followed this thread, all the experts have said "We won't have good predictions until MoS is closer to opening." Well, what's the tracking now?

Will the audience render MOS critic-proof? Tune in next time!

back to 59%

I can imagine the WB suits watching these numbers making calls to the right people to get their (hopefully) positive review in sooner.
I'm sad to see this unfolding like this .
Was this how it was for Green Lantern fans?
I'm still hoping for a 100 ow but now it looks like that may be out of reach. I hope I'm wrong.
The Transformers movies did not have to deal with Superman Returns in their rear view mirror. MOS may be in a situation close to what the Incredible Hulk was in just a few years ago and we all know how that turned out.
Let's pray to the comic book movie gods that the positive reviews start pouring in.
