With the proliferation and the ubiquitousness of smartphones and with smartphone apps like Flixster and Fandango whose primary function is to show movie screening times as well as options to buy a ticket, so reviews and ratings are unavoidable. They're not for the die-hards and the internet savvy anymore. The thing about smartphones is that it already is internet in your pocket and with these, it could sway the casual viewer from watching one film for another based on that glance on his/her phone if it has a red tomato or a must-go rating.

Transformers 3 still grossed a bil, didn't it? And that wasn't exactly a fresh plum tomato. Smartphones were around in 2011 also.

I'm just saying, the "casuals" don't care. Geeks and film junkies... we are the minority.

No, the president of CW was asked if it was still in development and his exact words were "Oh God, Yes!".

This is the part we're i'd get excited but after Green Lantern, the previous attempt at a WW show, and the current word of mouth on MoS, i'm gonna choose to just say "Meh...whatever".

Yeah sorry about being a cynic but I don't think you can blame me at this point given how rough DC fans have had it so far.

I generally agree, I think people are much more exposed to this sort of thing, and with movies being so expensive now a day, I think these can be make or break situations. I know it dissuaded me from seeing G.I. Joe back in March.

I think in this case though, if you're a Superman fan or a comic book fan, you're probably going to go see this. I know I unfortunately went to see Green Lantern, despite the terrible ratings, even though it turned out as bad as I had feared it would be.

What will be interesting is for the folks who aren't die hard comic book fans. The thing with movies like Avengers and TDK, they got people to go see them who weren't comic book fans. We'll see what happens here.

Operative words: Proliferation and Ubiqitousness. 2011 is a different time for smartphones and apps than 2013.

Let's just agree to disagree. Don't want to get into an argument.

Yeah I remember I went to the theaters with a friend and we were deciding what to watch, it boiled down to two options: The Host and The Croods. I told him let's watch The Croods because I quickly checked both movies on Flixster and it had a decent 69% as opposed to The Host which had a terrible 9%, he said he didn't want to watch an animated film and so I said yes to The Host with the mind-conditioning that it might prove my guts and the critics wrong, but you know what? the critics were spot on, the movie was worst than horrible and my friend apologized to me for dragging me to that movie. Lesson learned.

The obvious point being the critics more than missed the boat on Batman Begins as well while the crowd loved it then showed up in droves for the sequel. People last night were even acting like 63% among top critics is a bad thing (seriously???) when that was the same as Batman Begins! Now it's just a couple of points lower, but this seems like Batman Begins all over again. A crowd pleaser that the critics missed the first time around.

Also TF is a different point and an agreement with someone else. TF series, especially the sequels, showed that if you give them amazing action they'll show up in droves. Even after many hated TF 2 the same audience turned up for TF 3. It was the one film that wasn't hit as hard by a bad sequel as other franchises. This shows us how mainstream America thinks. Mega action equates mega bucks.

As pleased as I am that it seems there is someone else out here willing to acknowledge TF's performance for what it is.

The fact remains that, there are a crap load of films with mega action that don't actually equate to mega bucks. It takes a few things more than simply that imo.

Yes we should be a bit worried. There were fans who had delusions of grandeur thinking this would be in the 95-100% range. Even those of us who considered it being in the below 80 range thought it would stay above 70. Can't help but think of the box office and future of the just began franchise.

So you're hoping that MOS will turn out to be like TF3? Well, at least it's not TF2, which is probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Mega unseen action is important providing something no other film does.

I'll check RT when I'm on the fence about a movie that I don't know too much about. There have been movies I've had no interest in seeing that I've wound up going to see because the RT score was curiously high. More often than not, their consensus is on the money, at least with smaller films.

I only liked the first Transformers movie. Very surprised it isn't in the 70's range.

I didn't expect the RT rating to be in the 90's or higher however, I did NOT expect it to be rotten. The lowest I could picture in my tiny little brain was 70%. Now that score is just a pipe dream away...

Agreed. When Iron Man 3 came out it was bashed for having a mediocre 78% and Man of Steel was heralded as the film to beat this summer as having "The Dark Knight" 95%+ critic pedigree, but now one day before officially opening Man of Steel is whimpering and struggling to at least get a fresh rating. Don't get me wrong I am (or was) rooting for this movie to be Batman Begins which is a sleeper hit and a real solid start for a Superman franchise. If it comes to a scenario that it does make huge boxoffice money. there will still be that lingering feeling that it's just a generic popcorn forgettable summer movie like Transformers or Pirates, big on spectacle, low on substance.

tbh, i consider myself an average movie goer and i go see movies which i think i'll like .. i've never checked RT to determine whether i should go see a movie or not .. the only reason i've followed it this time  is because i've been anticipating a Supes reboot for so long .. who knows what the "other avg movie goers" will do wordlwide

That's the thing, I checked my phone not for the ratings but for the movie times and there along with the movie times is a rating. And lets also not forget Facebook and Twitter. So critics ratings are not so boxed in to film geeks and nerds exclusively anymore, they have reached the casual audience in terms of information availability. Now it's up to them to notice it or not of course.

I like how comic nerds are worried what a bunch of people who hate comic book/blockbusters films think of a superman movies.

I love when banned posters come back under a new name and think we won't notice.

So long!

Somethings got to give with this RT rating, man. Maybe these critics read the board and feel like they can change the landscape of superhero movies by purposely giving it a bad review thus leaving us with a string of comedic, quirky, cheesy DC superhero movies for the rest of our stinkin' lives! I'm seriously blocking RT. Out of sight, out of mind until I see this again and this time with family because I've already gotten text messages about the RT rating.

So, yeah, it's getting around to social media sites but when it reaches family who aren't very well informed with that -- it's personal :cmad:!!!

Comic nerds knew that in order for their movies to be successful, general audience must also flock to see their movies, and many of them would use RT to decide whether they want to see those movies or not. We may not care much about the movie critics, but we cannot deny the kind of influence they have over casual moviegoers.
