Marvel Heroes 2016: Gazillion plan another bumper year for David Brevik's action-RPG

When Marvel Heroes was coupled to the word ‘2015’ two summers ago, it wasn’t simply to signal the fact that Gazillion planned to carry on...

source: PCGamesNSo far, the next year promises a Secret Invasion story chapter with attendant new enemies and NPCs, plus support for leaderboards and tournaments, and an option for gamepads.
Controller support wasn’t exactly what you’d call a choice for Gazillion. For one, it’s felt mandatory in the genre since Diablo III hit consoles. For another, Marvel Heroes players were already resorting to homebrew solutions involving external software and .ini file fiddling. Felling frost giants from your couch via Steam Link or in Big Picture Mode is, apparently, a “pretty great” feeling.
“We wanted to give it some more formal support and make it function smoothly,” explains Lind. “It’s in early testing, and we really like the feel and think it will be exciting for many players. It’s a big challenge to make some important things work with the controller, but it’s definitely been worth it.”

Perhaps the shift from the study to the living room has engendered a philosophical change at Gazillion, too. They’ve started talking lately about short session play.
“Not everybody has time for a four hour session every day - even the most hardcore players,” muses creative designer Ryan Collins. “But it feels good to make progress towards a goal.”
To that end, the studio have designed Danger Rooms: randomised, repeatable endgame scenarios with clear objectives. Rather than shoot for a rare item and pray to the patron saint of percentages, players earn ‘merits’, a form of currency that’s intended to provide incremental, tangible progress.
“A lot of MMO type games are really exploring this,” says Collins, “and I think they’re better for it.”
The noisiest feedback from the Heroes community - like that which buoyed controller support - will continue to steer Gazillion’s priorities over the coming year. Spidey-associated antiheroine Black Cat is the first new character in their calendar, but the second is Neil Gaiman’s angelic bounty hunter, Angela - implemented in accordance with a public vote. As more names are announced, say Gazillion, the guiding hand of their community will become apparent; a game-directing hive mind resembling the school of fish in Finding Nemo.

Good news indeed!
Almost 7 years ago, I joined Gazillion as the Creative Director for a new Marvel product. I still can’t believe that this dream came true. I have been a life-long Marvel fan and I really relished the opportunity to create a unique and fun Marvel game.
Over the course of the next year, my job really changed. I went from Creative Director to the head of all Gazillion studios (there were many locations back in those days). Slightly after that, I was promoted to President and COO of the company and I became more and more distant from the project that brought me to Gazillion. About six months before Marvel Heroes launched, I became CEO, which is the position I have held for about three years now.
As CEO, I spent most of my time running the company. I played the game a lot, talked about the game a lot and added lots of feedback and new ideas, but that is a very different job than being a Creative Director. After doing this for several years, I really want to get back to developing games and programming. I got into this industry to make games and I miss the day-to-day creation process.
That said, it was difficult, because I love Marvel Heroes. I love our community. I love the team I helped assemble. We have an incredibly talented staff here and I know that the game is in great hands. I believe in the future of the game and I know a lot of the amazing things that are being worked on. The game has some really cool features coming that I know I will enjoy. Yes, I will still be playing the game. Yes, I will still be streaming. I will still be sending the team feedback and information and suggestions. I may not work at Gazillion, but I love this game. I’m very proud of what we accomplished.
As for what’s next, I am going to go indie. I’m going back to doing the things I love most: programming and making games. We will have more information about that in the future.
Thank you team, community and family for a wonderful seven years together. I am so lucky to be a part of such an incredible experience.
Best,
David
In a statement Gazillion thanked Brevik and said, “After six years with the company, David Brevik has moved on from CEO of Gazillion to other opportunities. David has played an integral role in the growth and success of Gazillion, most notably leading the development of the acclaimed Marvel Heroes 2015 – and we greatly appreciate his many contributions to the game and the community.”Read the full interview at the link above.
Brevik said in a statement, ““Creating Marvel Heroes has been a work of passion for over six years. It was my first opportunity to work on a live-service product and interact with our amazing community and it has been one of the best experiences of my life. I’m very proud of all the work our talented team has done together. Though the time has come for me to move on, I’m excited about the future of Marvel Heroes and look forward to what’s next from studio director Jeff Lind and the team.”

“The fact of the matter is that being CEO doesn’t allow me to be a game developer. […] I still could contribute; I still was able to give feedback and come up with ideas and direct some stuff […] from afar – but not really be involved with the actual creation of the game and not doing any programming and things like that. In fact, Marvel Heroes is the very first game that I’ve ever worked on that I didn’t do any programming. […] Being CEO for a while is just… I didn’t get into the video game industry to be a CEO, right? I didn’t grow up when I was a kid and say, ‘I can’t wait to be CEO of a company.'”
Permalink | 25 CommentsSo, is Advance Pack 3 meh? Or awesome? Let’s dig through the list of new faces.
ANGELA
As I noted in last week’s piece, Angela just doesn’t do a whole lot for me. I mean, she’s got a great story and striking visual design, but I’m finding it hard to imagine what will really draw me to the character. Then again, I’m not a game designer, so maybe the folks at Gaz will surprise me here.

RATING: Meh.
BLACK BOLT
Sadly, there aren’t as many Inhumans on this list as I expected. In fact, there’s only one! But I suppose if you are going to make room for one Inhuman, it may as well be the King of Inhumans, Black Bolt. I’m pretty ecstatic about this addition. Black Bolt is a great character to follow through the comics (be sure to pick up Uncanny Inhumans!) and his destructive voice will offer a unique approach to dispatching your enemies.

RATING: Awesome.
GREEN GOBLIN
We nailed this one last week and I couldn’t be happier for it. Justice! Angela may have won the fan vote, but the Goblin, his Glider, and his bag of tricks are sure to spice the roster up this year. This is easily my most anticipated character on the list.

RATING: Awesome.
NICK FURY
No confirmation on whether or not Nick Fury will be the “Nickromancer” fans have been hoping for, but I’m willing to bet Gazillion won’t disappoint here. Despite my love for Magik, I’ve never had the desire to play her as a summoner and I’m not really a fan of any of the other summoners in the game. Nick Fury could change all of that. Calling in a bunch of SHIELD dudes, and who knows what else, sounds like a lot of fun.

RATING: Awesome.
ULTRON
I’ve always found Ultron to be one of Marvel’s most boring villains in the comics and I can’t say I was a fan of him on the big screen either (or the movie itself, for that matter). Needless to say, I’m not at all excited for this pick. For those of you who are fans, he could be a fun blaster summoner type á la Dr. Doom.

RATING: Meh.
ELEKTRA
For me, Elektra is problematic for the same reasons as Angela. The difference is that I am a huge fan of the character. I’ve always loved Elektra and it was a damn shame that Marvel had to cancel her awesome solo book, but what the heck am I going to be doing with her in game? I feel like I might enjoy leveling her and maybe even red prestiging her, but I can’t see a character as simple and straightforward as Elektra keeping my attention for long beyond that. That’s not to say that Gazillion shouldn’t add characters like Elektra (or Angela) to the game, but the pressure is really on when it comes to your yearly roster and this is doubly true when your roster is roughly half the size it usually is. Kudos on that, by the way. Quality over quantity!
On the plus side, maybe this is a sign Gaz will get the rights to the Netflix costumes.
RATING: Meh-ish?![]()
I’ll be glad to eat crow later if she turns out to be awesome.
???
Who will our lucky number seven be? I’m hoping Gazillion leaves it up to a fan vote. Even though we did end up picking Angela last time, I have faith that the community will select someone more interesting this time around. There are some fan favorites that were left off of this year’s list and almost all of them would make for a great seventh pick.
It should come as no surprise that I’d want Angel/Archangel to make it in such a scenario, but I’d also be happy with Spider-Woman, Bishop, Ms. Marvel, or Quake.
WHAT ELSE?![]()
Advance Pack 3 also comes with some other goodies, namely four new team-ups (Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales Spider-Man, and two TBD), and a timed exclusive enhanced costume: Iron Spider for Spider-Man. I’m one of those weirdos that runs most of his team-ups passive, so I don’t really get too excited for new ones, but boy oh boy am I stoked for that Iron Spider enhanced costume. Symbiote Spider-Man will always be my favorite, but Iron Spider is a close second. I can’t wait to swing around in red and gold.

WHAT’S MISSING?
Mutants. Like the comics, Marvel has been marginalizing mutants in video games due to their little spat with Fox over the X-Men film rights. It’s really a disservice to fans, but at least so far Marvel Heroes has been an exception to this trend. Personally, I’ve been dreading the possibility that this trend would also hit Marvel Heroes, and I’m not really sure how to read Advance Pack 3 with that in mind. Is Gazillion now unable to get approval for adding new mutant characters to the game? I sure hope not. But I don’t suppose we’ll find out anytime soon.
I’m holding out hope that AP3 looks the way it does for no other reason than Gaz really wanted to add these specific characters to the game, but I don’t think I’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief until Gaz announces a new mutant character.
What’s your take on Advance Pack 3? Will you be picking it up? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

it was part of the BoGo sale this past weekendfrom last week and all this week.Quick question. I used ES to get two random hero boxes today. When I opened them, I got the hero plus an extra default costume in my inventory (total of 2 each per hero). Is this a bug or is this supposed to happen? To my knowledge, that never happened before
you lucked out man congratsOn a side note, I got Spidey, Hawkeye and Rocket Raccoon all from RHBs and had none. Its kind of risky for me to even get them as Im about 50/50 on getting someone new or dupe
but it wasnt. BOGO sales dont apply to ES purchases, only those made with Gs. Even then, a RHB will give you a random hero, not a duplicate set of default costumes. They make this pretty clear in this same link you postedok I'm gonna see if I can answer this and have new stuff fom my boy trbal sage

Are Heroes purchased with Eternity Splinters a part of this promotion?
No, only Heroes purchased with Gs are included in this promotion.
I see I remember reading most of it and mostly remembered top ones above it. I've been doing some wondering and maybe this some weird mix up in the system happened where may be the system mistook the ES as G's some how? but ,I'm not sure.but it wasnt. if that were the case, I would have gotten another random hero, not 2 default costumes. I wouldnt submit it to Gaz. Its a GOOD glitch. I dont want them fixxing it....lol. I asked elswhere and apparently its happened with someone else last month except they just got a costume and not one along with a hero like me. Hey Im not complaining. Just an extra costume I can throw into the blender for a freebieI see I remember reading most of it and mostly remembered top ones above it. I'll be looking in the marvel heroes forum in the report bugs and issue section to see if any one had a similar experience if there were other case's beside's you I'm sure it'll come up in their next patch notes.
But you may want to send this over to their bugs and issue section as well .
