Last week, Japan got several new releases in Pokkén Tournament DX for Nintendo Switch, NBA 2K18, Dragon Quest X: All-in-One Package on Switch, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Project CARS 2, Nil Admirari no Tenbin, and a cheaper version of Yakuza Kiwami. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared the latest on software and hardware sales data from the week of September 18 through September 24, 2017.
#1 of the week goes to Pokkén Tournament DX, the updated version of the Pokémon fighter on the Nintendo Switch, which saw a debut of 53,395 units sold. In comparison, the first Pokkén Tournament released last year (already feels much longer!) back in March 2016 and sold 69,675 units on the Wii U. Its sales are nowhere near that of a regular Pokémon game, but pretty reasonable for an updated version of a fighter from a year ago on a new platform, and good enough to take the top spot.
Splatoon 2 continues its #2 streak now for its fifth week in a row with 21,897 units. Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 which placed top last week moved 16,854 copies on PS4 in its second leg to chart at #3. NBA 2K18 charted at #4 with 14,487 units sold on the PS4, an improvement over last years NBA 2K17 which debuted with 9,777 units on PS4.
Dragon Quest X: All-in-One Package made its way to the Nintendo Switch and sold 9,482 units on its debut to place #7. Following right after at #8 is Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite with 8,273 units sold on PS4. This is an enormous drop from its previous entry, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, which sold 67,187 units on PS3 and 13,779 units on Xbox 360 for a total of 80,966 units between the two. It really shows how much things have changed, but well be putting it in the bombed category for Japan.
Our next new entry is Project CARS 2 at #11 with 7,359 units sold on PS4. Idea factory visual novel Nil Dmirari no Tenbin: Teito Kuroyuri Enyoutan released on PS Vita with 5,450 units sold in its debut for a #16 finish. Lastly, the cheaper version Yakuza Kiwami New Price Edition released with 4,596 units sold in its debut on PS4 to chart at #18.
We didnt see any major changes in the hardware side of things, but the Nintendo Switch finished on top again with 43,426 units sold, which puts it at 1,709,952 units total in Japan since its debut back in March if we go by Media Creates numbers. I also wanted to point out that this may be the first time we have three consoles in the double-digits with PS3 at 87 units, Xbox One at 76 units, and Wii U at 56 units sold in the week.
The top-20 chart of the week is as follows:
