DONE! DONE! DONE!

I am more than slightly relieved to say that I finally finished this piece I started before my x-mas card back in November!

I picked the photo this is based on to work on hands. Also, it had nice shadows and wrinkles and stuff.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the outcome...

I'd love to hear thoughts, if you have a second!

Awesome. Your sense of shading and attention to detail is top quality.

The hair on the top of his head looks flat though - everything else is so well toned to give the sense of depth and such that the top portion of his hair looks very flat. Maybe use the eraser to create some hints of light hitting the hair?

Great work!

Excellent. Superb, even. Is that you?

A really great piece! I think what brings it out is the wrinkles in the eyes and the pinky that isn't in line with the other fingers; they're both rendered damn near perfect.

But I was curious, what range of pencils did yu use for this piece? Or did you use only one pencil? I feel like if you made the blacks even deeper, the picture would really pop out, though I have a feeling that this picture looks 10x better in real life.

Scanners can not do pencil drawings justice.

Oh, and as for the Valentine card, top notch stuff. If you're not working for a company already, I highly suggest you start sending some of your pieces out. The Hot Topic crowd would go crazy over a valentine card like that. The piece practically sells itself!

that zombie cupid is disturbingly awesome dude. that piece of the little girl's face is coming along nicely as well.

AHHHHHHHHHH!

So sorry for my rudeness! I've been so swammped, I haven't had time to respond to recent comments... and some not-so-recent. ;)

So here we go!...

I really like the way you do realisistic drawing. I took a drawing class this past semester and learned how difficult it is to learn these techniques, so I can appreciate this very much.

Thanks... I never really took any art classes after jr. high, so its really nice to get feedback!

Thanks!

Great work!

Yeah... Point taken.

For one, the hair was very dark in the original photo, but the reality is I have a real hard time with hair. I actually watched some videos on you tube, and have practiced some hair techniques, and I actually picked the reference for my current work in progress to get some practice with hair.

Excellent. Superb, even. Is that you?

First, thanks! Secondly, its based off a photo of James Franco.

james dean?

Nope. James Franco.... who played James Dean! ;)

that penciled piece is ace man. great job!

Thanks!

great pencils Matt

love seeing the progress - thanks for showing man.

Thanks a lot Jug!

Well the pic in real life does have more contrast that the scan does... You've mentioned it in the past, and I'm trying to be mindful of getting as deep blacks as possible. I do yous different pencils but I got a 9B before starting my current one picture to try to push it a bit further.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I actually would have no idea how to go about that, but I appreciate the idea that you'd even think that's a possibility!

:D  Love the little tagline there.

:) thanks!... I was trying to kinda mock the cheesy puns you always see on Valentines.

Im thinking James Franco...

... very interested to see how this pans out... theres something really terrifying about her expression so far, particularly the eyes in the middle stage...

Your pencil work has improved dramatically. Really enjoying watching it.

Thanks. I think the eyes do look weirder in that progress shot than they will in the end, but the expression in the reference photo is hardly a light smile.

Thanks a million!

:) You like zombies movies? Your stock just went WAY up, in my estimation.

Ha! Nope, although I can kinda see that in one of the early progress shots where the left eye hasn't seen a lot of attention.

The reference is actually a picture I found on deviantart... I emailed the guy and he sent me an amazing high res reference image. Yet another reason the deviantart community is f-ing awesome!

So now we're getting down to business with my current portrait.

I chose the picture specifically because of the level of detail in the hair, one of my MAJOR weak points.

After watching a you tube video, I got to work.

Here's an animation of all of my progress so far...

girl_03.gif

And here's a larger plain old scan of my current progress:

girl_04.jpg

The area of the hair I've done so far is some of the least detailed in the photo. However, there is actually a lot more detail there (in my drawing) than shows up in this shrunken scan.

I'm getting the hang of how to do hair better, but needless to say the hair area that remains will give me a LOT more practice.

As always, comments appreciated.

Finally had a chance to spend some more time working on this portrait...

Just more of the hair is completed...

Next time I work on this, it will be done. I just don't know when that will be. Comments welcomed!

Excellent shadowing. Beautiful work.

Great work man, i dunno what it is, but I really like this unfinished version, even better then the almost finished version. Something about it not being complete makes it really ghostly and for some reason, more beautiful to me.

Well, seeing as I chose the reference image base on the fact tha I need some practice with hair, I'll take this to mean that you, too, think I need a bit of practice. ;)

Just kidding. Thanks for the kind words.

I agree the different tone realy create a great sense of believability.

Thanks as always, KAD.

Well, I need a bit more work on my portrait, but I can only do some much of that at once.

I was programming for 10 hours today and needed to unwind, but wasn't in the mode to work on something so serious.

I decided to start a new digital piece, based on Buzz Lightyear.

Here's the sketch and flat color so far...
