MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 1

I see this discussion ending poorly.

Agree, the story should come first. Yes I would like to see more characters of different ethnicities but they shouldn't be shoehorned in.
What Hollywood needs is more writers and directors from different backgrounds. How can a middle class white man write story's about a culture he doesn't know and do it justice?

What do you want?

All the stories in Hollywood to be about middle-class white men?

:woot:

If people just stick to making stories that reference their own background, no matter how you try and level the playing field behind the scenes, you would still see a net reduction in stories ABOUT the people you say need more input.

Dunno it's a toughie. But if they do want to have more international appeal they should probably hire more international writers and directors. There are some fantastic talents out there. Look at John Wu he was making cracking films for almost 30 years before Hollywood hired him.

If I didn't count wrong, then Bobbi Morse is the 100th character from the comic books to appear in the MCU. congratulations.

100? Wow!

And it looks like AoU might send this MCU into orbit.

Is there a list somewhere online that is a good reference? I was actually thinking about this today myself, after having watched the most recent Shield episodes I was wondering how many comic characters they were at now.

not that I'm aware of. I made a collage in 2010ish which is a constant work in progress and expands whenever a new character is introduced/cast or announced. when I added a new pic for mockingbird today I noticed it

That would be awesome, but extremely difficult to count accurately (no offense).

Do you count namedrops? What about background characters? I hope that's right because, as I said, it's awesome, but it's so easy to be off by one and it ends up being someone lame who gets it ;)

no namedrops just visible appearances

OK, cool. Do they have to be featured or would someone like Adam Warlock count?

That's what I'm asking. Fair enough, just asking for clarification.

actually, celebrations were premature, I did a recount and it seems I added the known cast of Ant-Man into the list yesterday (and forgot Agent 33).

Bobbi Morse is actually No. 97

so, three characters to go, I guess it will happen in AoS and I hope they make it a good one

I personally hate the racial pandering, I'm hispanic and I barely notice whether an actor is white, black, asian, etc. I just see actors playing characters and as long as Im invested in the story I don't really care. The problem is when movies start casting actors of certain race or shooting in certain places just to appeal an specific demographic, the recent chinese pandering is a good example. TASM 2 had scenes in chinatown to appeal chinese audiences LMAO that's just pathetic.

I think it's really messed up when people call any and every assertive use of culture and ethnicity "pandering to appeal to a demographic." Sometimes you make a character like Nick Fury black just to make the world more realistic as there are important black people in the world, unlike a 100% faithful adaptation of comics where there are none (and people dress up in 50s clothes and drive 50s cars and so on). There doesn't seem to be much basis for the idea that updating a property to reflect current society just as the property originally did is "pandering." At least, no more than casting a white actor because they're perceived as marketable is pandering. The assertion that it is done to make that individual character more appealing to people of that individual race is really judgmental and cruel and kind of insulting to the idea of art and writing and culture and adaptation. Being a minority and holding this viewpoint doesn't make it any less judgmental or insulting.

Id like to see a Ghostrider vs Blade movie.Should help setp Midnight sons

There's a couple of funny cases in AoS that depend on exactly how you count them. For instance, I wouldn't count "Scorch" even though he's on the AoS list, because it seems like a coincidental reuse of a generic code name, rather than any attempt to depict a specific character.

Similarly, Coulson was initially an MCU-original character, but (IIRC) had migrated to the comics before AoS came out.

I also assume you aren't counting the Honorable Mentions.

Lastly, I forgot to add Senator Ward to that list last time I updated, since we know he'll be appearing (he's another special case: his first name is different -- Christian, not Stewart -- and he probably won't be a "Z'nox hybrid"). I'll add him after Tuesday's episode. Assuming your count is correct, that would make him 98?

You should post that if you can, I'd love to see it.

I have some time to kill before my next class and have done the same thing, but I stopped at Iron Man 3 and I have 63 characters.
This doesn't include Thor 2, Winter Soldier, Guardians or AoS, so unless my estimations are off I think we should be at over 100 by now? I'm including every character who was on screen (not just a mention like Steven Strange in TWS) and who shares the namesake of anyone in the comics.
This includes such obscure characters like Christine Everhart (who was a reporter in two or three iron man comics, and was in IM and IM2), some of the named Frost Giants, the two student reporters in TIH named Jack Mcgee and Jim Wilson, etc. Once I get to AoS I think it's fair to include characters like Scorch, Tommy Ng, considering that he shares both the namesake and the power of Scorch in the comics. I could be wrong but if we are going by my criteria than we should be in the triple digits by the time I'm done.

I think one of the TIH students was a reference to the Ferrigno show. I don't think he has a comic counterpart.

Just looked it up and you're right, Jack McGee wasn't in the comics. Now we're down to 62.

I can name quite a few of them (maybe not 100), but a lot of them are pretty obscure. Guys like John Garrett, Lance Hunter, Alexander Pierce, etc. You have to be REALLY into Marvel comics to know who they are.

Half of the characters are people I'd never heard of and I've been reading comics my whole life.
A lot of the times they'll work backwards to find obscure characters to fit the story they are telling. Like in one of the earliest AoS episodes they knew they wanted to have a fire-based villain, so they found a super insignificant character named "Scorch" who appeared in like 5 issues of some random series in the 90's to fit that character.
I'd say those sort of things still count, so that's why I think that by the time I'm done I'll have over 100 characters.

Marvel Studios have a special event on Tuesday apparently. Phase 3 announcement maybe?
