New Mutants New Mutants News and Discussion - Part 1

I know some people will theorize that this is Disney stepping in subtly, even though they're not 100% under their umbrella yet.

Apparently it was tested with R rating. "Not scary enough" makes sense.

According to The Tracking Board's Jeff Sneider, the New Mutants move was also inspired by test screenings for the film, which have caused Fox to re-evalute just how much the film relies on horror elements.

"Word on the street is that after the film tested well but not great," Sneider writes, "the studio decided to actually embrace the film’s horror elements and beef up the scares in the wake of the success of It and Get Out last year."

I feel very bad for Josh Boone right now. I can only imagine how idiots and annoying some executives and producers can be..... Boone deserved 100% freedom not this
I know I'll get attacked by some here but I do wonder if Boone being a huge fan of this property initially pitched this as something more like the New Mutants comics and then the powers that be turned it into a non-X-Men related horror story set in an asylum. It's just a curiosity of mine.

Oh I'm sure Boone is a huge new Mutants fan that he turned this as a homage to his favorite 80 horror flicks... That the iconic new Mutants costumes aren't gonna be used.

Its funny to me that they are delaying this because of a "good audience test but not great enough". While Dark Phoenix isn't moving an inch...

Anyway, if it makes the film better then good for the film. At least this would be a better final Foxverse film than Dark Phoenix.

I think that slugzilla poster was right.

I think they want to salvage this mess, and I'm not sure I buy the "good but not great" test screening. Surely good would be good enough to release it at the date they established?

Either the little marketing so far hasn't created enough interest, or the movie isn't very good, or a combination of both.

To me, what's worse is its not even out in less than a year fromnow. Its thirteen months from now. I just think they would really do a major retooling of the film and I am thinking half of the movie would come from the reshoots and that would cost them a lot than they intended to, though I don't care about that if it makes the film look more polished.

I also think the small buzz to this is also a factor. There's just so excitement IMO especially compare to the 2018 films that have already released a trailer. I also think the timing of this is really off. Gambit is delayed once again, the Disney take over happening and since when a trailer of a film is released and gets delayed 10 months from it's original release date. Embrace the horror!

^^^^ So this person (who was attacked for telling lies etc) was right after all.

Funny how that works ain't it, must be a coincidence.
Fox isnt doing anything to make the movie "darker" or "scarier". That is complete bs. Reshoots are being done to lighten the tone of the movie, make it flashier, & add much needed humor. Again, its just sad that JB was allowed to completely change the direction of this movie that some people worked really hard on in it's early stages and had seen such great potential in.

Is there any possibility if the test screenings for Dark Phoenix turn out be "well but not great" and it gets moved to 2019 as well? Like 18 months from now.

So it's Josh Boone behind this non-Xmen horror direction? Was the movie initially actually linked to Xavier's Institute somehow?

I don't think Disney has anything to do with this. I don't think they are seeing this as the next Gotg or Doctor Strange. Well it could be but with a different direction and More faithful adaptation. But this? It looks like a typical horror flick that most won't even see. This is a typical example od incompetence from Fox and they aren't doing this movie any favor by delaying it ten months. Obviously, there's trouble behind the scenes that they aren't addressing to the public.

Someone on Twitter is making a different claim on the reshoots!

The #NewMutants reshoots are NOT for what is being reported by the trades. The opposite, actually...

Plus, he also did an article on his blog.

Not sure what to believe, but if the reshoots are to lighten the film and not make it scarier, damn!

Of course Fox would be lying if the truth isn't good. Fantastic Four, Suicide Squad, Justice League.... We have been through this... No studio would admit to the public that their upcoming film is currently in trouble. Fox just doesn't have a good quality control with their films. They are very inconsistent.

worst case scenario they're making it less of a horror movie and more of a superhero extravaganza

I would like that, though I just prefer for them to start from scratch and just completely embrace the source material and leave this horror shenanigan.

the horror thing is part of the source material, and I wouldn't be interested in this if they made it like every superhero film ever

Not enough lighter interactions/banter between characters?
The recent horror flicks referenced had a significant amount of that as well.
Sounds genuinely odd coming from Josh Boone since that's where his strength lies.

Part but its not an essential part of the New Mutants. Like seriously when people think of horror comic books. I doubt people think of the New Mutants. New Mutants is X-Men Jr. But more in fantasy adventures and not much in saving the world/mutant population. Like you should know that if you have read New Mutants vol. 1 to 3.

I "heard" this was movie was almost entirely different in its early stages, but Fox decided to let it go in JB's idiotic horror direction after the successes of the last two R rated fox X-Movies. "People" tell me that there were some whom were involved long before JB showed up who fought against this decision. And it cost some of them their jobs. Others stayed and tried to right the ship. But that was in vain.

Based on some of those reports, it just reads like the film was drearily dull.

But New Mutants are a superhero team, and they were recruited by Xavier (MIA in the film it seems).

Maybe turning it into some fully horror movie doesn't demonstrate enough confidence in the source material like when they tried to make Fantastic Four whatever the hell Fant4stic was? Obviously not to the same extent, but still, some bad decisions were taken that led to this.

A mess. Of course Fox now thinks every R rated flick will be a success. Never mind that New Mutants aren't as r rated as Deadpool/Wolverine for it to be a r rated flick. Just seriously, just embrace the source material. Isn't that what Logan/Deadpool did.

I envisioned this much more different when it was announced. I remember speculating the original cast could be involved since the prequel cast can't pass off as veteran X-Men yet (except for Lawrence, Hoult and McAvoy). Can we seriously see Zaga, Williams, Heaton as the "Jr" counterparts to Turner, Sheridan, Shipp? They look like contemporaries with them.

Maybe interest in this would've been higher if their existence was established in a previous X-Men movie that was a big hit like DOFP, instead of bringing them in out of nowhere with no relation to X-Men? IDK.
