I watched
BvS two days ago. I had read some reviews (all of them negative) and somehow I even managed to go full spoilers with this one. Hey, if the movie was
that bad as everyone suggested, I might as well prepare myself. I went to the movie theater with an imaginary shovel, ready to "bury" the movie in an instant, my expectations at their lowest.
Boy, I was wrong! As soon as the movie begun, I somehow stopped worrying about noticing "flaws" and "plot holes" and I took notice of the direction. As soon as I saw young Bruce in the cave, levitating among the bats, I said to myself "that's not that bad.". What made me even more assured was the Metropolis sequence during the events of
MoS: It looked absolutely spectacular, the whole street level POV and Bruce driving skillfully, evading debris and explosions. The scale of it was amazing! Juxtaposing that scale were some sequences the had, appropriately, a dream-like quality to them, such as the intro, that shot of Bruce among the ashes with the horse passing by or even Clark and Lois in their apartment (HELLO Amy Adams!).
As the movie progressed, instead of feeling dread, I was impressed. "Oh, here comes Lex, surely he'll be awful" - no, surprisingly he wasn't! I hated him in the trailers but here, somehow, his character worked, ticks and feeding gummy bears to senators and all. And I didn't bother my mind with finding "errors" in his plans or triple layers of motivation or, or, or. I just sat back and relaxed. "OK, this is their Lex, fine".
Oh, "mopey" Superman is here! - No, he wasn't. I realized, even during
MoS that this is not Superman from the comics, nor the other adaptations. I simply accepted this and moved on. And it was much better. Hey, I was one of the "Cavillry" back then, during the Casting Wars. Critics call him a non-entity (both the actor and the character), which I found absurd. Here, I absolutely loved the sequence where he
does all those heroic deeds, where humans
talk about what to make of him. And how awesome was the post-nuke regeneration, straight out of "The Dark Knight Returns"?
Batffleck was great, never had a doubt, but he was even better than expected. Oh, he kills people! You know what, I can accept even this one. I can find a couple of motivations he became cruel, as Alfred points out. And of course he had fantastic scenes, like him evading the police after branding that criminal, shot by Snyder as a mini horror movie. The chase with the Batmobile. The fight with Superman. Martha's rescue. The fight with Doomsday. His interactions with Diana (how great was Diana?!)
I kept watching, in awe, thinking that anytime now, the movie will drop the ball. It never happened. Were there elements that I didn't like? Sure, but somehow, thankfully, they never bothered me. Except the Flash. Ezra Miller seems to be terribly miscast.
Look, me and my geeky friends, all in our 30s have long accepted that DC will do their thing and it will look like
MoS and
BvS. And it is fine. They can be the dark epics and, well, the "other guys" can have their colorful, fun thing, which I also find awesome. But to see
BvS getting slammed by the vast majority of critics was and remains baffling. I, for one, am happy to be proven wrong.
