I was in the same exact boat as you. I didn't really have anyone in real life to teach me these things. How to walk, a sense of style, how to approach women. I found a lot of my confidence watching Connery.

Those are great tips too. I will surely be following this when I need a tux one day. I was going to be a groomsman at a wedding this year before COVID cancelled things. Barring the colors, is it possible to request these specifications such as the pants or type of bow tie, even if the other groomsman may not have them?

It depends on the bride and groom and how they want their party to look. If they want everyone to match, it is their decision. If they are open-minded, I am actually a big fan of the idea that the groomsmen dress in black tie, but do not wear matching tuxes. Instead, they wear their own choice of traditional black tie. It makes it look less like everyone is wearing matching rentals and more like an actual black tie gala where everyone is wearing their own personal tux or dinner suit. That's what we did at my wedding. When you do that, the gentleman can even wear whatever variation of black or navy they desire.

I don't know who I might have to convince on that one, the bride or the groom. :funny:

According to Wikipedia, Pierce Brosnan was cast for Goldeneye in June of 1994. The last time there were four Bonds in the world was 26 years ago.

RIP, Connery.

Yeah, and Lazenby is in his 80s as well.

Timothy Dalton is 74. Not too far behind.

I still would have loved it if Connery took the Albert Finney role in Skyfall as originally intended. It would have been way too tongue in cheek but it also would have made for an awesome final performance from Connery, as much as I loved Finney in it.

The script is even more blatant that it was meant to be Sean Connery. Though I kind of understand why he didn't do it. I'm kind of glad it didn't happen. I think it would've been too goofy for that type of story.

Yeah, that would have taken people out of the movie. Skyfall is incredible, but I think that would have been the moment everyone pointed to as the blemish. "Skyfall was so great, and then Sean Connery showed up as a different character and I was like, whaaat?"

It's more like something that would happen in a Roger Moore film ;)

To take it back to this movie for a second, U.K. announced a 30-day lockdown. Can you imagine if they hadn’t had moved this movie back? It would have been a total PR disaster if it couldn’t even open in England.

I mean, I still think opening in spring is probably too early but I guess we will see.

Connery was and IS the best Bond of all time. Each one of his successors, to some degree are emulating him. Connery's Bond isn't literary Bond, so the cinematic Bond we see are more or less snapshot hallmark of a character reimagined by Connery and Terrence Young.

Also, Connery's style as Bond includes some of the most iconic suits that are again, often emulated. However, my personal favourite of Connery Bond's overall sartorial outing is in From Russia With Love. His suits were impeccable, from his dark navy suit where he receives his mission from M, to his suits he wears in Istanbul, his naval outfit on the boat; to his pinstripe suit when he hilariously faces off with Rosa Klebb; and it's the one Bond outing he technically didn't wear a dinner suit (yes, the spectre agent dressed as Bond in the PTS is obviously Connery in a dinner suit but you get what I mean). Connery is truly the last of the greats and as a diehard fan, he'll be missed.

Day 002 of Connery's 007 Coolest Sartorial Moments - The Grey Glen Plaid Suit(s) from From Russia With Live

Whereas the Fleming novels establish Bond's standard uniform as a lightweight suit in Navy Serge, white dress shirt, and black knit silk tie, From Russia With Love established the cinematic Bond's business attire wardrobe with Connery's Iconic mid-grey Glen Plaid suits. Connery wear two of them in the film and also another pick-and-pick grey suit that looks very similar. I am going to focus on the one worn by Connery at his meeting with Tanya on the ferry. It has all of the classic attributes of Connery's Conduit Cut style (named for the side street off Savile Row where his tailor Anthony Sinclair was located). The jacket has a button two front, which gives a deeper V of shirt and accentuates Connery's athletic figure. The jacket has double vents and four buttons on the sleeves. The pants have Connery's classic double English forward pleats with slim legs that taper to turnup and a no-break cuff. As his suits are bespoke tailored, Connery does not wear a belt and instead his pants are adjusted by a set of side adjusters (as is classic English fashion).

Glen paid is one of the most classic, beautiful, characteristically British patterns for a suit.:

Depending on the size of the check, it can very subtle or also rather flamboyant. Connery's Glen plaids always confirm to the former. Like the other three grey suits Bond wears in the film, Connery wears this one with a pale blue dress shirt and a navy grenadine silk tie. The three together make for a very classic, and flattering combination on all gentlemen. In fact, Daniel Craig's best sartorial moments often come when he is paying homage to this colour combination.

A pale dress shirt is an absolute classic and often looks better than a more formal white dress shirt. Here, as always, it is the small details that make Connery's very classic shirt and tie very special extra special. The very pale blue shirt has the formality of a white shirt, but the added visual interest of being blue. It is detailed with killer bespoke spread collar made by Turnbull and Asser specifically to compliment the shape of Connery's face and has "cocktall cuffs on the sleeves". Now often known as "James Bond" or "Dr. no" cuffs, cocktail cuffs are a unique shirt cuff that is almost only found now on high-end custom shirts. The cuff buttons like a standard shirt cuff, but it it has an extra layer of fabric that folds back like a French cuff for added formality:

They are just plain cool.

Connery pairs the shirt with a grenadine tie in solid navy. Grenadine is a type of woven silk that almost gives the appearance of being knit in an homage to the very classic knit silk ties worn by Bond in the books. The woven texture of the silk reduces its shine and gives it the appearance of almost having a subtle pattern. Once again, just ****ing cool.

Connery compliments the ensemble with a simple white linen pocket square in a basic TV fold. It is not poofed or folded in some fancy pattern of points. It is simple and clean. Most importantly, it does not match any other part of Connery's outfit. it is not matched to his tie or shirt as often less stylish men do (cough Craig cough).

Last, Connery completes the look with a pair of simple black derby dress shoes. There is no broguing or wingtips. The simple clean lines of the shoe complete the look of elegance and sophistication. Like a good British gentleman the shoes are black, as only black shoes suit the formality of business in a city and brown shoes being reserved for country pursuits or holidays abroad.

The first film that I could watch after, I heard the news was The Hunt for Red October.
The odd thing is , it might have been a coincidence. I saw it on Showtime. They have been showing Sean’s movies for about a month now. They showed Russia House on Friday.

Watched From Russa With Love with a glass of scotch in Connery's honor.

Cheers, good sir. (Bond trivia - In the original Fleming novels, Bond drinks Scotch more often than a Martini. His favourite drink is a Double of Haig&Haig ("Dimple") with soda.

Brand and how did you take it? Neat? On the Rocks? Splash of water? With soda? Go Fleming on us with the details. :D

I'm currently on a medication that does not allow me to partake in spirits, but I did my best and had a very British meal Saturday night with a Toast in Mr. Bond's honour:

I have no idea how Americans/English are calling their wine, claret ?? but this is a Bordeaux Cru Bourjeois, Pauillac label from Medoc area (well, you probably knew for it's on the label :p).

Edit: nice cat.

"Claret" is an old British English term for a red Bordeaux. It is derived from the old French term "clairet" for a dark rose, since Bordeaux wines exported to England in the Middle Ages/Early Modern Period were quite light and almost rose. It was Anglicized to "Claret" and became the British word for a red Bordeaux.

:hehe:

As you can see Connery's last grand meal as Bond in an official EON Bond film was Prime Rib au Jus paired with a Claret from Pauillac. :cwink:

Thanks for reminding me of those two, Wint and Kidd, and how obscene homophobia used to be.
