From what I've read here in the UK they are looking at retiring the character of James Bond and will just do films based on the codename 007 from now, with Lashana Lynch taking over.

I'm all for equality but this is becoming a joke now if this is true. Why can't they just make a new, original franchise with powerful female characters?

For goodness sake, they're not getting rid of James Bond and they are NOT making a series of films based on Lynch's character or any other 007 agent that isn't James Bond. Stop buying into and believing tabloid bs.

It’s so incredibly unlikely that it’s barely worth entertaining, but that said...if by some ungodly event that it was indeed true, it wouldn’t be a long lasting thing at all. Sooner or later the fad would grow old and they’d do a reboot with James Bond returning.

One thing I do like about this whole business is that it seems to finally be sinking in to the uninitiated that 007 is the codename and James Bond is the individual.

One would have to be overwhelmingly dumb to not have grasped this.

I mean in 2012, they literally established that James Bond is his real name. It's his family name. If people are just going to sleep on that they should stop going to the movies.

In the Fleming books, I believe it was always obvious that 007 was his callsign/codename/agent designation, just like with M and Q.

It's amazing how so many people struggle to understand something so simple. In any case I suggest people read the Bond novel forever and a day. In it James Bond gets assigned the 007 code name after the previous is KIA.

I don't mind her being a kick ass agent with the codename 007 in the film as it makes sense in the context of the previous film.

What I don't want is them to retire the character of James Bond and carry the franchise on with her.

Jinx got introduced in Die Another Day and they were very close to making a Jinx spinoff before it fell through. I think common sense ultimately prevailed. And not because Jinx was a woman of color. It was because Jinx was an awful, poorly written character and she was generally perceived as one of the worst parts of Die Another day.

I’d prefer spinoffs with the other 00s rather than give them too much attention in a mainline James Bond story. He’s already kind of got his own ensemble between M, Q, Moneypenny and (the Great) Bill Tanner without adding the rest of the section.

I’m kind of surprised they haven’t done spinoffs with other 00 agents given that “cinematic universes” are “in.”

Ugh, 007 is a Codename/title. Leave it alone... stop being angry about something this dumb that isn’t actually happening to your white male character. Bond will not change.

We know this from Fleming, and Horowitz even carried that forward.

It’s neat and fun to do, within a film, knowing that it’s always been in the novels.

Thing is, to some people, it feels like there is an agenda to reduce, wipe off the map straight, white males. So naturally some people see this and they think 'here we go, sjw's have won'. The western world is slowly becoming more diverse, great!! but, at the same time, it should reflect society naturally and organically. The western world is still a predominantly white race, just as asia has their ethnic groups and majority and alike, so naturally, more white charaters will dominate. No one is calling for bollywood to be diverse where equal casting takes place as an example... so it's problematic, for no reason - just represent, simple. Hollywood should reflect society, but it has to be honest about how it goes about it.

I have said all along, what needs to happen is they need to keep Bond as he was created, old school money, posh, blah blah, bit of a dick around girls, everything that people don't like right now, it seems... just because, that's who he is. Make the supporting cast around him diverse, like it is in the real world. When people go to watch the movie, if they like bond, good... if they don't, tough.... but at least on screen everyone gets to see an aspect of themselves.
Further more, the oo7 code can be anyone's.... and this is why a proper origin story for a rebooted bond can show him gaining the title, perhaps after the retirement (hopefully not forcefully) of an agent.

You think were happy all of sudden because we have a BLACK WOMEN taking over the 007 mantle. Is this how Hollywood thinks . We weren't even convinced about Idris Elba and you think were getting on board with this bull****. Most of you along with hollyweird have lost your damn mind. Also...the source of this rumor is the Daily Mail.

007 was his call sign or agent designation. It's not the "James Bond" is a codename thing. And Spectre ended with Bond retiring.

Something tells me this will all get overblown such as the homoerotic flirting scene in Skyfall where Bond says, "What makes you think this is my first time?"

Baz at the Daily Mail is the most reliable, credible Bond movie scooper, leaker there is. The Mail may be a tabloid rag generally, but for this stuff they are usually spot on.

Also, people need to stop freaking out. Waller-Bridge, the film's female co-worker gave this quote about Bond and how he treats women:
'I think that's b******s. I think he's absolutely relevant now. [The franchise] has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn't have to. He needs to be true to his character.'

In other words, Bond should not change, he should continue to be a misogynistic privileged white male imperialist, but the films need to be careful about glorifying or legitimizing his bad behaviour, which makes perfect sense.

Except white straight males are FAR from being wiped off the face of the world, let alone Hollywood. They still dominate 90% of movies and tv series. The amount of POC in films/tv are still LOW so it's far from problematic. Majority of americans don't watch Bollywood films and we have no power there so of course there is no call to be diverse, we can't even get our house in order. Not to mention that females outnumber males in the US yet that doesn't seem to reflect in Hollywood.

We are still in a continuity with the previous Bond films, he was still 007, they are just advancing the story by rocking the boat.

What has always made me laugh about the "James Bond is a codename" theory is that one of the most consistent traits of the character is how AWFUL he is at consistently using a code name. MI6 sets up code names and he just walks in announcing he's Bond all the time.
