The Dark Knight Rises OFFICIAL: Batman in the Burgh - Part 10

This film could definitely have 290 plus scenes in it. A shot is every time the angle changes. I've been on sets where 88 shots were filmed for one scene with many character's in it and that was just a short film. This is nowhere near a short film. The pic of Joker in the bank that says scene 16W is scene 16 shot W and if they go past the letter Z they start with double letters so it'd be shot AA, AB, AC and so on. That is just for editing purposes so the editor can piece the puzzle together for a rough cut of the scene. If you look at the Star Wars Prequels they had 1500 effects shots which means they had 1500 shots with special effects in them. The Dark Knight had 290 shots alone in the first 15-20 minutes guaranteed. 290 means scenes not shots and that might just be what is listed and it may not the full list. All shots aren't listed in a shooting script if you think about it. If the director chooses to add a shot that he or she thinks of on set they have to add another number or letter to the slate as a bonus shot. If they plan to do 10 shots in the scene it would end on the letter J, but if they choose to do more the letters keep going. Hope this helps.

I am only speaking for myself but I have never even heard of, let alone seen a letter being used to describe the shot.

A letter is there to show camera angle within a shot.

One thing to realize here is you are looking at 2 different films.
The Dark Knight and the current one.
There are not necessarily using the same system.
I'm not saying they aren't, but the script supervisor usually works this technical system out with post. Is it the same scripty on this film as the last?

that's the same thing isn't it? W describing the angle of the shot.

The slate pictured for TDK is interesting in that the letter next to the shot number doesn't indicate the take. I've seen it done both ways on smaller film sets and an HBO show set.

The bank robbery has more than 16 shots, but you can easily see how it could be cut down into 16 short scenes when there's quite a few different locations in that sequence.
If the entire film carried on a that pace (unlikely) 290 would an hour into the film. :cwink:

The Bank Robbery might not have all been shot in that order though. They structure the shot list based on availability of locations, actors and priority.

No, you're wrong. W just means that that is one of the setups in a given scene. 16 refers to the scene number and w refers to the shot. w would imply that they are on the 22nd shot (they don't do ' i ' because it looks like a 1 and could be construed as a j).

W in the sense of the alphabet? I posted that as a possibility earlier in the thread. Often the direction or angle o the take will be described on the slate because the lettering ALWAYS refers to the position of the camera or the specific shot.

*grabs a cup of coffee* well we're down to the last couple of days for the Bat in the Burgh threads. from here on out the news will probably be little to none. But it was great while it lasted. *cheers* Thanks to all our Pittsburgh ninjas. I hope you NYC and LA ninjas have good luck with your efforts like these guys did.

Gordon is here, JGL and Josh Stewart. Tumbler and bomb truck in alley. Hard to get a decent view.

Mercenaries as well, they wanted to split the cops between local extras and those that could be in LA.

is this the same location as yesterday?

Josh Stewart seems like the most prominent mercenary. Old prison buddy with Bane? :)

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning right now in Pittsburgh. I'm not on set though.

Aside from the ninjas who have been awesome. I have loved your coffee grabbing and "go get em's" to the ninjas :)

No it is Penn Avenue. They start again in 30 mins, just sweeping the puddles away now. Too hard to film anything.

Is Bale rumored to be there? Saw some tweets saying he's been spotted. Anne might be there as well since the last day of her promo stuff for her new movie was yesterday.

Nolan numbers each shot as he films them, but another thing I learned from watching them film TDK all summer is that... at least in that instance, he didnt film the shots in order. For example, the scene and shots involved during the last confrontation between the Joker and Batman that left the Joker hanging was shot in the middle of or close to the end of July, but the last scene and shots they filmed in the city at all was the Lamborghini being driven by Bale and than crashing infront of a eatery right next to my apartment building. Also, they filmed the scene at the start of the movie with scarecrow as the first or second shot they filmed in the city, where as the bank scenes were almost around a week later.

Sorry if this is off topic by the time I post it, just saw this being debated/discussed and thought I would throw in my 2 cents

Looks like the weather will be clear until about 4pm today. Then there's a 75% chance of some more storms through the Pittsburgh area.

Theyre filming on Penn NOW?

If I were at home and took a leak out my window, I could hit a tumbler...... but I'm not at home.

I'm curious to know what this huge stunt is they're going to do on Exchange Way.
