Anyone know if there is going to be an extended version? Or do those usually come out later?
From what it sounds like an extended edition will come out but it will probably come later in the year/probably just before Desolation of Smaug hits theaters.

I believe the LotR trilogy SE came out in august of their respective release years. I remember seeing recently Jackson stating there'll be about 30 minutes of extra footage in the cut. Can't wait :awesome:

The extended editions for the LOTR films always came out the november after the films release(ROTK EE came out in December). And the inside reports and leaked documents from last year said an extended Hobbit bluray would be coming in Q3/Q4 of 2013. So look for the extended edition in October or November. No earlier than that.

FOTR EE DVD-November 12, 2002
TTT EE DVD-November 18, 2003
ROTK EE DVD-December 14, 2004

FOTR Theatrical Cut DVD/VHS- August 6, 2002
TTT Theatrical Cut DVD/VHS- August 26, 2003
ROTK Theatrical Cut DVD/VHS- May 24, 2004

Its really not that bad. A 7-8 month gap inbetween a theatrical cut bluray and an extended cut release is small. If they were greedy they would wait a year or more to give the theatrical cut plenty of time to sell.

Guess you have to pre-order the Digibook in the actual Wal-Mart store to get the different covers. http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=213498&page=16

So tempting but I'll wait for the EE.

If that's the poster, I'm definitely tempted by this offer.

Edit: Like I have room on my walls right now... but still

Intresting both DVD and Bluray hav same special feature.

But I wonder If expanded edition will even be on DVD.

It had better be.

And it feels like I already saw the EE in theaters. What more could they possibly add to the movie? Idk, I'm getting the EE anyway, 'cause I'm a sucker for LotR.

I'll probably pick up the Best Buy with the Gollum cover. The film was pretty good and I'll watch it a few more times but it definitely felt like it was being stretched out a bit so I'm going to skip the EE.

Yeah all of which are available online for free. This is a bare bones release.

the EE will probably have more special features. the special features with the LOTR EE's were amazing so i have high hopes for the hobbit EE.

Those DVD covers look sweet.

I'm making a prediction now: the color of the EE "book" case will be orange.

No doubt. The EE releases will be bursting with features.

So disappointing, the worst part is I'm going to get this version and the EE too! And will probably get the ultimate trilogy set when that comes out. :( I'm gullible when it comes to Middle Earth I guess...

are we absolutely sure there is going to be an Extended Edition release?

Definitely, it's pretty much confirmed they will do one after they accidentally released their quarter slate of releases.
