Yeah, I wasn't a fan of Gandalf confronting Sauron. You'd think that after what happened in this film, by the beginning of Fellowship, he'd be a little more urgent.

Maybe this is a legitimate complaint or maybe I just lacked sleep, but the pacing went so slow after Thorin and company show up to help Bilbo. I felt like it dragged. I dozed off and woke up a second or two before the cliffhanger. I just wish this film was split up into two films instead of three. It isn't what I remember reading.

Saw this today. It was everything I was hoping for and then some. The barrel scene was fantastic. I loved that part so stinkin much. It was just so fun. The elves were great also. Legolas really got some great scenes. And dont even get me started on the third act with smaug. All of his scenes were great. This was easily my favorite film of the year. 5/5 :)

I enjoyed the movie but it had some glaring faults. After part two I've seen nothing to convince me that making three films out of this material (with some lore-centric additions) was a better decision than making two or even just one. There were several points, especially early on, where it felt very much like it was stalling unnecessarily. And then you have Legolas thrown in there along with a lot of references to the Rings trilogy.

And just imagine if Guillermo Del Toro could finished what he started. In a parallel universe, those people are lucky. It's not that Jackson is completely f***ing up. It's just that these films simply aren't as good as they should be.

I will say that this one was so much better than the first one. The pacing in the first film destroyed me because things had to be so dragged out to make the book a trilogy.

I cant imagine there being only two movies now. We would have lost a lot of great stuff, imo. So I'm more than happy to get 3 films. The more of this world i get to see on screen, the better.

Yeah, the Orc that Legolas captures says something about it.

There was the whole bit at the beginning of Fellowship where Gandalf goes off to Minas Tirith to read Isuldur's account of the taking the One Ring. He then finds out about the writing on the band, so until he does that test on Bilbo's Ring then he sees it's one and the same. He tells Frodo something about the spirit of Sauron endured.

Sure, but that wasn't Gandalf being unaware of Sauron's return rather that was him failing to put two and two together and realizing that Bilbo had found the One Ring. He, and the rest of the White Council, were convinced the ring was washed into the sea after falling into the Anduin river. Still, when you conisder that Gandalf entire purpose on ME was to stop Sauron, he looks pretty idiotic in taking so long to realize it isn't some minor magic ring but the One Ring itself.

Agreed. I really love these two movies. Can't wait for TABA.

Edit: Where is it implied in FotR that Gandalf is unaware of Sauron's return?

Yeah but that's more about the Ring itself... not Gandalf's surprise at Sauron's continued existence. Hell, that's why Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth in the first place... to contest the will of Sauron. He knew from the very beginning that Sauron was still alive and at work in the world. Gandalf himself had average knowledge of the Rings of Power, which had been Saruman's area of expertise.

Oh, I'm not saying she destroyed it when Sauron was around. However, she still tore it down. Dol Guldur did not collapse on it's own. This makes sense and is quite consistent with Tolkien's other writings BTW. Galadriel's brother, Finrod, duels Sauron in a battle of song (aka magic) and Tolkien even claims she is one of the greatest Noldor comparing her to Feanor.

I think that's probably the right reading of it.

The problem with making Galadriel super-powerful is that it makes a bit of a nonsense of the scene where she is briefly tempted by the Ring, which was incidentally the most embarrassing sequence in FOTR. If Boyens really believes Galadriel was more powerful than Sauron, why would the former want the latter's toy? She should have been as indifferent to it as Tom Bombadil was.

I didn't particularly care for this instalment. I didn't like the addition of the love triangle (but then again, neither did Evangeline) and I think Legolas should have been reserved to a cameo. In truth, I'm looking forward to an abridged version of The Hobbit.

Quite simply the most dissappointing cinematic experience I have felt for quite some time. What an absolutely pointless movie. Didn't care for any of the characters except for maybe Bard. The non-existent narrative. Some filler action to prevent you from falling asleep. And lame writing. Why or why, Jackson? WB? I don't think I'm even gonna watch the third one next Christmas. Transformers sequel level bad... 5/10, and that's being generous.

why is the poll closed already?
THAT was absolutely Beautiful!!!! Smaug couldn't have been any better.
So far DoS is my favorite of the Hobbits trilogy

Picked this up at the Saturday afternoon showing

Wasn't Gandalf only an angel to Sauron's Satan?

They're both Maiar.

Sauron like Satan choose the path of evil but the former is still a Maiar and the latter an Angel. They've just been morally and spiritually corrupted.

Satan was only an angel.

Gandalf and Sauron were in league 2. Sauron's old boss, Melkor, was in league 1.

I think the poll is originally from when AUJ was out in theaters and now (since we're on part 13 a year later) it's that stupid thing where the poll automatically is closed due to Thread Manager creating the new thread(s).

I Loved the film. Tho in parts like Mr M said there seemed to be a rehash of certain phrases between characters, like some of the scenes including Legolas and Evangeline. They just seemed out of place like something Legolas wouldn't say and more like Elrond would say

So any word of Viggo doing a short cameo of Aragorn in the third film? Doesn't he capture Gollum at one point and brings him back to Thranduil.

Not sure how well that would even work seeing as Viggo has aged noticeably I think.

....we NEED a danged Fantasy Thread....THAT is another example why lol

So I have the day off (really rare for a weekday off around this time of year) and I think I'm going to see this.

Is the IMAX 3D worth the extra?

Pretty sure they specifically said this is not happening.

Gandalf as a Gray Wizard of the order is weaker in power than even Sauron at his weakest though. It's only when he became Gandalf the White that he got a power upgrade enough to be in Sauron's league.
