Well even if they tried making him look 15 years younger Viggo would still look too old. The only way it would really work would be with a recast.

Ironic that, with all the filler, something specifically alluded to in the LOTR novel won't be seen. :funny:

Can we assume that Galadriel and the White Council will rescue Gandalf?

I REALLY WANNA SEE THAT!:wow:
Did you guys saw the christmas message of Sir Christopher Lee?
He says that he is A LOT in the third one...i cant wait till december of 2014:cmad:

why is the poll closed already?
THAT was absolutely Beautiful!!!! Smaug couldn't have been any better.
So far DoS is my favorite of the Hobbits trilogy

I definitely understand that reaction. Smaug was awesome and the best part of the movie. My only problems with the movie are the parts that Fran Walsh completely invented whole cloth.

Look I get that the Hobbit has an inherent problem with absolutely no female characters in the book. I just felt that Tauriel was a weak character and more of a bad rehash of Arawen.

The best parts for me are Smaug, Freeman again delivering a fantastic performance, and Richard Armitage. It's going to be heartbreaking in the 3rd act, even more than King Théoden!

The best parts of this movie are up there with the Rings trilogy, but I feel Fran Walsh just went too far with some of her changes. I could have done with less Legolas and more Bard the Bowman.

Why are you blaming Walsh? That feels straight Boyens to me.

Was thinking of this but Legolas had a bit more edge to him in this movie. I kind of like that. He was intense but not dangerously so...well unless you're an Orc.

I don't know why I find that picture of Smaug hilarious. :lmao:

I think it reminds me of a dragon version of the famous/infamous troll face.

What a beautiful beast. Looks like he saw this thread.

I don't think it's a very good sign that I fell asleep during the entire Elf sequence at the beginning (half an hour). Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug completely saved the movie, and his voice was magnificent. The motion capture on the dragon made him look animatronic at points.

The problem with this "trilogy" is that Jackson and co seem to have forgotten about the Hobbit book altogether and are making some straight-up LOTR prequel. Legolas was there for some ****ing reason and there's the whole Necromancer subplot (as someone said here earlier, Smaug is a good enough villain on his own) and overall all these references and ties make the film feel unbalanced, and that was the same with the first one. Admittedly, entertainment-wise I preferred it to An Unexpected Journey but the script for this one was worst. Maybe it's just because I hardly remember anything, but it didn't seem like Bilbo, Thorin, Gandalf or anyone had any character moments at all. Bombur still hasn't said one line in both films. If they JUST focused on actually adapting The Hobbit then both movies would have been so much better.

3/5, and that's generous.

5/5 Greatly enjoyed it. The scene with the skinchanger was a VERY welcome change from the book and I greatly enjoyed the Gandalf/Necromancer scenes as well as Smaug. The spider scene was also well done.

I was so, so bored in the cinema today. Tragic. Can't wait for an abridged version of this trilogy to come out.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of Gandalf confronting Sauron. You'd think that after what happened in this film, by the beginning of Fellowship, he'd be a little more urgent.

So is the Necromancer supposed to be Sauron?

Agreed. Great scene.

Legolas and Thranduil are so much more interesting and fun in this than your average PJ Elves. they're like really cranky Vulcans or something. this is the most entertaining Legolas has ever been.

I agree that most of the problems come from trying so heavy handed to tie this to Lord of the Rings. The audience isn't stupid, we already know that Bilbo's ring is the One Ring, we don't need them beating us over the head with it.

Trying to focus on Sauron so much takes away from Smaug who is the real baddie in this movie, and he's fantastic. They also really blew it with Beorn who is reduced to a cameo roll in this film.

Why are you blaming Walsh? That feels straight Boyens to me.

Walsh was the primary one making changes in the Rings trilogy to focus on the rings power. She's the one responsible for completely changing Faramir's motivation, because she thought it weakened the Ring's power.

they really didn't focus on Sauron that much. that was a fairly small amount of screen time dedicated to that plot thread.

and, yes, of course we know this is the One Ring, but the whole point was to show the effects that it is having on Bilbo. i thought that was some of the best character stuff in the movie, frankly, how Bilbo's part in the spider scene plays out.

But what you described is straight Boyens.

I'm sitting waiting for this to start. Still excited despite the criticism and a lot of it I'm sure is warranted but seeing as I enjoyed th first one I'll venture out to guess that I'll enjoy this one too.

That was the only part of the scene I did not like. Has no place in the Hobbit, especially considering this is all just going to be delayed for decades anyways. The scene with Gandalf got it across in a better, not so obvious way. But of course they couldn't stop there.

And the Sauron/Gandalf away bits while not super long, come at the worst times imo. Slicing into the finale and the start. The early scenes with Azog reminded me of the Frodo opening from the first film. Makes others bits of the film feel longer because we are delayed from getting to them. The movie literally pauses multiply times to set up a plot thread for the third film that has no significance to the main plot.

Different film from the first, but as I said before, plenty to enjoy. Just be prepared to groan/roll your eyes a few times.

Also, see if you can figure out where the extra barrel comes from. :woot:
