Yeah, really he's such an iconic and well drawn character. His general aesthetic has been ingrained and reusedin modern fantasy for years now in just about every medium, but I'm hungry to see those original stories brought to life!

I bought my hardbacks back in the 70's....I don't remember the price, but considering I didn't have much money back then the price must have been pretty good. I haven't even checked the price on new editions.

The Alan Lee illustrated hardback box set of FOTR, TTT, & ROTK cost me $90 at Barnes and Nobles in 2005.

Today, the average cover price of most hardbacks (any hardback not just LOTR) is around $30.* Rarely will you find a cover price below $20. Paperback 2nd print runs about $14.99. Mass market runs about $7.99-$9.99. Of course, most sensible stores will put discounts on those prices so a smart shopper rarely pays the price on the cover. And Amazon is almost always cheaper than these prices.

*I've got a few hardbacks that exceed that average price. My copy of Thomas Jefferson Art of Power has $39.50 on the inside flap. The paper they used in the book is high quality, and in general the book is very nice, but that price is imo outrageous. I only got it because B&N were getting rid of excess stock and I grabbed it for $7.99. That was a steal for that book.

I want to see Stormbringer on screen. I think the most recent appearance was Prince Nuada in Hellboy II.

Does anyone know if there's a downloadable Walkthrough from Shadow of Mordor?

Is there anything from Lee that covers ALL of Bagend? I need to finish that Google sketchup model but the other rooms on the floor plan Bilbo had hanging up aren't shown anywhere

Vartha, I haven't found much interior Bagend done by Lee or Howe. Just the entrance hall, dining room, the kitchen area, a floor plan, and exterior shots. Lee released a sketchbook that had some of his work in it, but I'm not sure what it includes. I seem to remember that it wasn't very thick tho so I doubt it focuses much on any one location or character. I'd love for weta or someone involved in the LOTR and Hobbit productions to commission a big art book that covers all 6 films. It'd probably cost a pretty penny, but I'd happily pay for it.

On another note,

Production on the Battle of the Five Armies has ended.

From as good a source as a source can be, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” is not only virtually done as you read these words, this is the final day of production on the film. Keeping in mind that New Zealand (where, if you haven’t heard, the films are made) is 16 hours ahead of Hollywood, the following quote comes to TheOneRing.net from the future, Friday morning:

“Today is the day!! The last reel goes out the door tonight.”

We have also learned from two sources that Weta Digital delivered its final shot Thursday night, leaving the final touches on the final reel of the final film. Pure speculation here, but that must be an emotional process, knowing that the great big collection of talent is completing the task it set out to do years before. And for Jackson and those around him, it is definitely the end of an era.

A lot of tired workers at Weta Digital will be getting sleep soon but the filmmakers now begin the job of promoting the film around the world, starting with the world premiere in London.

There is of course the extended edition of the final film, but heading directly to the home video market is different from unfurling a film in a theater. But there you have it folks, this is the last work week for the full post-production team on The Hobbit. Fans will feel an era has ended as well.

Finished a little over a week before the world premiere. That's actually kind of early for Jackson.:p

Empire announce their "Farewell to Middle-Earth" issue, guest edited by PJ.

Despite my indifference towards the Hobbit trilogy, I might well pick this up next week. First issue of Empire I'll have bought in about... three years or so, I think?

Maybe we'll see the GRRM Stormbringer and the GRRM Elric in a Mystery Knight adaption. Some day....

The SFX team won't know what to do with all that free time.

It's a travesty that Elric hasn't been done on screen.
Yep....been decades since I read the books, but I liked them. Another old series I read that you don't hear much about these days is THE CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER.....I was also going to mention the SHANNARA series as needing to be filmed, but apparently MTV just recently announced they were greenlighting a limited series.

PJ will give them a call in a couple of days. Shouldn't the Elves have some kind of steampunk blimp from which to fight the Bats That Are Bred For War?

EDit : Yes confirmed !
I'm hoping they wind up handling all the flying shots

Towards the end of our conversation, I brought up the upcoming work they'll be doing on James Cameron's "Avatar 2," "Avatar 3," and "Avatar 3," as well as Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and I asked them about how those filmmakers react when they see something like "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes," where the technical art has been pushed forward to such stunning degree. I asked if it changes the way those guys approach their upcoming projects, or if it's all just part of a continuity, something they expect as the field progresses.

“We are working on the Man of Steel sequel, yes… We can’t say much more than that, but we’re excited.”

That blimp has sailed with Del Toro's departure.

Nice! I want to read Tolkien's translations of Beowulf and Sir Gawain. Heck, I want to read all those books you've bought, but I can't ever seem to take the time to actually do it.

I have quite a few of those too. Mostly the Norse related myth other than Beowulf

Over the last few days I have been heavily watching the BTS stuff for the first two hobbit films. I'm SO ready for the next one now. Less than a month!

The official music video for Battle's "The Last Goodbye" sung by Billy Boyd. Features footage from all 6 movies plus behind the scenes footage from LOTR & Hobbit

Once again.... my reaction?

I want to find a comprehensive list of all the best hardcore fantasy novels and gradually read them all. Like a bucket list of stuff to get through.

Watching Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen brings the ring cycle to life, though reading it may be quicker.

Sir Gawain is a lovely book, and reading it is a Christmas tradition of sorts.

I have never made it all the way through the Kalevala.

Is there a video of Wagner's Ring available for purchase?

I'm trying to get back in touch with ancient mythology, a subject that fascinated me quite a bit in college.
