I really thought they were gonna end it
after the barrels sequence.

I loved
the final line though.

"Looks like the worst is behind us!"

:funny:

That seems to have been the original intention when it was 2 films. That is why it made sense that there was Bolg and Legolas toys. All that stuff was locked in months ago. Also why we saw footage of Gandalf in Dol Guldur.

Because it makes us have to pay to see it again. Which I will. Despite all the griping I read about the 48fps the past few months, everyone I talked to who saw that version has raved about it.

The 48fps was distracting for a lot of the film, but I actually started to get quite immersed during some parts later on. And contrary to what a lot of people have been saying I thought the sets and make up held up just fine and the CGI (while overused) looks great for the most part. And when the 48fps really works the movie is BEAUTIFUL. When Galadriel showed up my jaw dropped to the floor. Same for the entire Riddles In The Dark section and the mountain giants fight.

My only gripe is that I can't see the movie in 48fps 2D, as I think it would have looked quite a lot better that way, and taking off my glasses a few times during the film, I thought the colors looked much better without the glasses, as is usually the case with 3D.

Yeah I was wondering why we didn't see Gandalf in Dol Guldur.

I don't mind it so much since now that this film shows Gandalf showing up to save them, in the next part, he won't be so that will be a nice change for Bilbo's expectations and raise the stakes on the group's part.

So with film 2, what are we gonna see?

The Barrels
Mirkwood and the spiders
The Elves
Laketown
Bilbo and Smaug
The Smaug finale
And everything else in between. I expect a lot of the film will be in Laketown and what is going on there with more exploration of the River Master with Stephen Fry.

Film three I'm guessing is gonna be shorter than these two. Something like DH2 where it's all about the build up to the battle and the battle itself.

I was expecting Bilbo to name his blade in this one, but I guess he'll do it after he kills those spiders.

Did Bombur talk? I don't think he actually did, or at least he didn't have a line that wasn't banter.

With Bofur, I loved his moment with Bilbo in the Misty Mountains. It was very honest and heartfelt. Nesbitt was great. An oversight when making my list.

You're right, I don't recall him talking at all.

Yeah, that was a great moment between Bilbo and Bombur.

I think you outline is pretty close to what will happen with perhaps one exception. I think [BLACKOUT]The Smaug finale[/BLACKOUT] could be held off until the start of film 3.

I already have this feeling I am not going to enjoy pt3 quite as much as the first two. It is how I feel about DH pt2. I like it, but it doesn't feel like a movie. Just one long ending.

Blade naming should come along with the [BLACKOUT]spiders[/BLACKOUT].

A couple more things on Gandalf. I smiled at the callback to FotR and his war with Bilbo's ceiling lamp. I also really got a kick out of every time he did a head count of the dwarves.

Made the mistake of seeing this in HFR 3D. Wanted to see it in HFR and there was no HFR 2D near where I live. As usual, the 3D was too dark, eye-hurtingly so. The HFR is okay, though it makes some scenes look like live-action video, but I don't see the reason for it. What about this is better than 24fps? I don't get it. The story is okay, though it feels a lot like a lesser Fellowship of the Ring.

I can't imagine there only being two films. There was almost nothing in this movie I felt needed to be cut. Shame we could've missed some good stuff

Also, it was quite a bit more exciting to me than FOTR was. I loved the lighter tone and how there was pretty much always something exciting happening. Loved the adventure aspect

It takes awhile to get momentum going and then it has hiccups along the way. I felt like Bilbo got pushed to the sidelines to an extent. His character feels just a hair too thin. The company of Dwarfs is significantly less distinct that the Fellowship was. A few of them I couldn't tell you anything about. The narrative feels unfocused too. There's a disconnect between the quest against Smaug and the groundwork they're laying for the Necromancer. Taken on their own, those threads are interesting, but taken together they make the proceedings feel a little bloated. Certainly the weakest of any of the Rings movies.

The HFR took some serious time to adjust to. The lack of motion blur tends to make certain actions look like they're in fast forward. It really helped with the CG characters though and any sort of vista was stunning. The tech is there, but I think we have a ways to go before filmmakers really dial in how to utilize it best. Cant wait to see how Cameron tackles it. I have zero doubts that he'll know exactly how to use it.

But.

I liked it. It was a good movie. There's typically fantastic production design and creature work. Jackson excels at creating stakes and tension on a beat by beat level whilst never losing sight of the whimsy, of the fun, of the adventure. Not one of the years best, but I'll certainly be seeing it again with my wife and my mother.

Edit: forgot to mention Howard Shore's work. These days, no one writes thematically for film as well as Howard Shore does. It was a joy to hear him step into that world again. There were actually a few moments in the film where I got ahead of what was happening on screen just because I'm so familiar with his leitmotifs. Fantastic work.

Yeah, remember him doing the head count two times, thought there were possibly more times. I didn't notice the ceiling lamp war in this one, so I'll have to catch it on a rewatch. The part where Gandalf slightly lost his temper because the Dwares were doubting Bilbo's skills as a burglar and the room darkened was a nice callback to his FOTR "Conjurer of cheap tricks" scene with Bilbo.

I also have to say that I loved Goblin Town, especially the escape sequence.

I liked how fast paced it was. Really felt like an escape, lol

Just got back from seeing it......fan-freakin-tastic.

I saw in 2D, it must not have been the 48fps because everything looked normal to me. Had no problem with the CGI looking bad, and the film didn't drag at any point for me.

I thought it was a beautiful companion piece with TLOTR. I had a great time.

I also have to point out how much I loved that the line about [BLACKOUT]the invention of golf[/BLACKOUT] was in the movie. I loved that line in the book. :funny:

I about flipped my **** when Gandalf went off on his "good morning" tangent. Also:

"I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me!" = :hrt:

I give it a B +. I can see why the critics are a bit up in arms about it, and there were parts of it in which I was rolling my eyes a bit, but other than that , its a fun film for the most part.

The 48 frames at the beginning cracked me up more then anything else, though I do think that the effects at the beginning did look alot like very screen saver graphics and odviously cgi , so they're gonna have to work on that a bit I think.

Odviously , as a fan of the original trilogy, I feel it does lack that certain something that the other films had, but its a good family film and I recommend it.

Me too! I was bummed when it ended, I was ready to see the rest.

During that swooping shot through the halls of Erebor, did anyone else have a blur issue at 2D 24fps?

I guess we'll see these scenes in the extended cut.

Bilbo discovers the Shards of Narsil.

Gandalf finds Thrain in Dol Guldur, and that's where he gets the map and key from him that he later gives to Thorin.

Really? I feel that would be the perfect finale to end part 2 with this huge exciting sequence that would conclude the quest they went on. With the exception of the final battle.

I can't imagine it ending after Bilbo meets Smaug.

So with the critics, I just keep hearing that it's not like LOTR. Any better criticisms of the actual execution of the story? Because things like that I don't mind. When people say it's not like LOTR they are missing the point. I don't mind critics, but if this was like LOTR, with their nature, they would turn around and question why it's so much like LOTR and would want it to be its own thing.

To the critics, It's not like the Lord of the Rings because it's The Hobbit.

Same here. The pacing for this film was damn good.

So because it's its own thing that makes it bad?

...

Yeah, I thought it could have been longer actually. Like two movies longer. :awesome: But it ended at the right point.
