it didn't feel long to me. if anything it felt too short because the 3 hours flew by.

Why is the poll closed?

Anyway, I saw it last week. It's amazing! I have no idea what the haters are on about. I guess they expected Lord of the Rings and 'the Hobbit' is a completely different book.

It made me happy to think how much shows like Hercules: the legendary journeys and Xena have helped NZ cut their teeth on fantasy. I loved all the dwarves too and the Goblin King was amazing!

I still need to get around to seeing this, hopefully before the week is over.

I was going to see it the day of, but I had some reservations because of what other people were saying about it. Then, before I made my mind up, my family and I visited my grandma's from the 18th to the 27th. We never got the chance to go out and see a movie during that time. After we came back, I've either been too busy or too lazy to go out and see it, which brings me to now.

Curse my indecisiveness! :argh:

This is going to be really annoying but you MUST see it! In my eyes its the best movie of 2012.

See it. See it. See it. See it. See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.See it.

:awesome:

Well, it's 2013. You know what that means....Desolation of Smaug comes out this year! :awesome:

Happy new year!

What do you mean? Do you wish me a happy new year, or mean that it is a happy new year whether I want it or not; or that you feel happy on this new year; or that it is a new year to be happy on?

All at once I suppose,

all of them, I guess...

That's what Mr. Bilbo Baggins hates!

dissappointing movie. inferior to the trilogy. first hour or so was so slow and dull. gandalf seemed immature. the comedy was lame. last hour was better. movie picked up when gollum, blanchett turned up, but by and large i did not feel much for the dwarfs. bilbo was understated but i did not mind his character. almost deters me to go see the next installments

There’s no way these films could have lived up to the expectations coming after the LOTR, which is considered the greatest trilogy ever by many. The expectations for these new films could have never been met because of that.

The Fellowship of the Ring’s pacing is slower. Which is considered the masterpiece of the trilogy.

gandalf seemed immature. the comedy was lame.

I’m presuming you liked the darker and more mature tone of the LOTR? Are you being harder on this film because the LOTR had a more serious tone than this? The Hobbit is not as a serious story because it was written for children. Jackson did say he was going to keep the lighter tone as in keeping with the book. Some of the silliness in Gandalf that you speak of might acutually be true to the book.

Lets not forget there is a little bit of immature/silly humor in the LOTR movies too, almost not enough to mention of course. With Pippin farting from eating Lembas bread. There’s also the drinking game where Gimli farts and burps. Merry and Pippin fighting over Tree Beards magic forest water and with Merry acting really silly in the scene. When Merry finds the Long Bottom Leaf in Isengard his performance is silly there too, "Not to hasty." and laughs silly as well. It's easy to be to hard on this new film when being compared to some of the best movies ever made, and are darker in tone.

but by and large i did not feel much for the dwarfs
Well their plight is what the story is about. It's not as big and epic as the LOTR but it's still good.

They are adding in the subplot of Sauron and the Ring, taken from the Appendices at the end of the book The Return of the King. They've already added in Gandalf saying Smaug the dragon could be a servant to the enemy(Sauron) if not destroyed. The Sauron subplot will be expanded upon more in the next two movies. I assume they'll be attacking Dol Guldur in book 3 and Sauron will be escaping into Mordor.

I'm enjoying these films for what they are. The story of the The Hobbit and Appendices. The Hobbit is meant to be more playful/fun. Don't go into these films as a fan of The Lord of the Rings movies, enjoy these as a fan of Middle Earth! :)

Gandalf the Grey> Gandalf the White

Agreed. Gandalf the White is a man on a mission. He's much more about getting the job done and going back to Valinor.

Gandalf the Grey keeps up his mission, but he has a genuine connection to the people of Middle Earth, especially the Hobbits, than any of the other Istari. He's a much warmer character.

The problem isn't that they're different, it's that The Hobbit is trying to be LOTR. Thus, it feels more like The Lord of The Rings-lite than a bona fide Hobbit movie.

At least for me...

I finally watched the movie last Sunday and I'm surprised by how much I liked it. Seeing that the first reviews weren't really good, - and that I never cared for this movie, even though I liked LOTR - I had my expectations at bay, but I always trusted Jackson's work.

I'm also really happy by how much the trailers did NOT show the stuff of the movie, which led to really good surprises, like returning characters, the white goblin and my favorite part, which was the battle between the moutains - the stone giants.

Wonderful movie. It brought a smile to my face when the Company began the journey, cause I knew that another great adventure was coming. I'm anticipating the next one like I never did for this one.

Has anyone else seen the high framerate version, and if so how did you like it? I felt it was a little bit odd but that might be because I'm just not used to anything else

I felt the complete opposite. The Hobbit seems to be doing it's own thing, making it's own way with a whole new tone to it. Sure they're set in the same world, but for my money The Hobbit took itself a lot less seriously than the LOTR films and changed it up enough to stand on it's own. "LOTR-Lite" for sure, but that came off to me as a fully intentional difference, not an effort to make itself like LOTR.

I saw the high frame rate version in 3D super HD AVX XYZ or whatever the hell it was called. The frame rate itself threw me a little at first, like when Bilbo is writing his story and the quill is moving really quickly, but I got used to it after the first 20 minutes or so and it became a non issue. The thing that did bother me was the really crisp picture that made everything look real. That one Dwarf's bald cap looked like a bald cap in every close up, the characters just looked like actors in expensive costumes, CGI looked insanely obvious and the sets looked like sets.

After seeing The Hobbit I am now of the opinion that a film can definitely look too real. We need that filter, the little 'bubble' that separates the audience from the things happening on screen. I don't want to feel like I'm on set, I want to be told a story and believe the characters. This is the main reason I haven't really made a detailed opinion on The Hobbit, I want to see it again is a 'lesser' quality before I can truly determine how much I enjoyed it or not.

The first time I saw it in a standard IMAX 3D. The second in HFR. I really liked it. I never saw what were people talking about looking fake. It looked great. You just need 5-10 minutes to get use to it.

The HFR does make the CGI and 3D look so much better.

I tend to agree with this. It's like Fellowship 'lite'.

HFR has ruined other films for me, I keep noticing how blurry they look during movement now

I cannot agree. Everything in FotR is necessary, strong and pushes the story and characters forwards. Even in the "slower" scene it has a momentum that The Hobbit just can't match. I'd say FotR is one of the finest paced films I have ever seen.

I think the big thing is that it feels like a mash up. The Gandalf side story and the added stuff feel odd and almost shoved into the Hobbit. Some stuff is ridiculously goofy like Radagast, while stuff like the White Council feels right out of the LotR. Makes for a lot of weird tone shifts. Almost like two separate films running along each other.

Agreed. FOTR builds and builds and has tension and threat in the first 15 minutes driving the rest of the plot. The Hobbit's pace just meanders about for much of the film. Feels more like a sightseeing trip than any kind of tight paced adventure against time. They even set up the fact that the back door of Erebor only opens at a certain time, but then seem to forget to make this a point in the film robbing it of any sense of urgency.
