It was good. Way too much cgi and I hate how Tolkien made the eagles pretty much the get out of jail free card. I roll my eyes how much of a simple escape they are. Why didn't they ride the eagles in the first place to close near the mountain? Same thing with why Frodo just didn't ride the damn eagle near Mordor. I was so glad that there were only 2 songs at the Shire and then it got serious. It was just a tad too long too.

In the book this is explained. One of the reasons is the eagles fear being shot down by the men of Dale.

In the movie the eagles can't talk, so no explanation is given... yeah, seems like a plot hole.

They were hunting by day in The Two Towers as well when they attacked Theoden's people traveling to Helm's Deep. So it's just something I personally have to overlook.

Those were Uruk Hai, who can travel by day. It made sense in TTT.

They work for Saruman. They are uruks, unless it is explicitly stated somewhere in the film that they were simple orcs. Saruman has Uruks in his army, not orcs...

Noticed a MAJOR problem when I saw the film for a 3rd time today. The orcs attack on wargs outside Rivendell... in the daylight. But as the film makes plain while they escape Goblin town, orcs can't travel by day. This is made clear in LOTR too. The Uruk Hai are special because only they can travel by day.

This means this is a major continuity error and inconsistency just so we can see radagast get chased about by some warg scouts...
Uhhh....it was cloudy? :o

Were all the Orcs and Goblins cgi? They didn't look as good as they did in LOTR.

These are his Warg riders. Orcs. This wasn't his army. Did you watch the clip? Also, Saruman clearly had orcs serving him in FOTR. Uruks are never seen riding Wargs.

Did you watch the clip?

I've seen the movie. The point is that it is never stated from what I can remember that they are orcs. Thus , they could be genetically altered like Uruks or like the Olog Hai. There is a plausible explanation.

Of course Uruks are never seen riding wargs, because it never happens in the book. This was an alteration. The only explanation is that these were Uruks riding wargs, otherwise there is an inconsistency somewhere.

In the Hobbit, there simply isn't one good explanation... it is a huge oversight.

The ugly thing that teases Legolas about Aragorn falling over the cliff IS NOT a Uruk. That is all. LOL.

Inconsistencies happen.

I believe that in one of the extended editions (those I have watched more recently than the theatrical editions) Gandalf says the Sauron is causing the heavy cloud layer that lets orcs and trolls out during the day.

I'll go and see if I can find it.

That is true C. Lee for the battle of pelennor fields etc. but in the warg attack there are blue skies...

My only explanation is that they were Uruks capable of running in the day... otherwise it is an inconsistency I think.

It is explicity stated in the TTT EE when the Uruk meet up with the Orcs on the way back to Saruman.

"You're late." The one in the front spoke. "Our master grows impatient. He wants the Shire-rats now."

"I don't take orders from Orc-maggots. Saruman will have his prize. We will deliver them." The lead Uruk-Hai replied.

Ah, I remember that now. Yeah, that makes it even worse then. Dang it.

I found the part I was looking for.

LOTR:TROTK EE Chapter 12: The Decline of Gondor

After meeting with Denethor, Gandalf and Pippen walk out to the end of the ship like prow of the mountain and look at Mordor.

Pippen: A storm is coming.
Gandalf: This is not the weather of the world. This is a device of Sauron's making, a broil of fume he sends ahead of his host. The Orcs of Mordor have no love of daylight. So he covers the face of the sun to ease their passage along the road to war.

So, Orcs were in his army, and having sunlight blocked by clouds can protect them. So far I have only been able to see the HOBBIT once, so I don't remember how sunny or cloudy the scenes were...but this can be an explanation. And if Jackson did have it sunny....who knows, it could be cloudy by the time the DVD shows up.

I don't remember how much Tolkien went into this stuff in the books (been decades since I read them)...but on a similar track of discussion of another well known character, most people tend to not know that Bram Stoker wrote that Dracula could go out in the daytime if it was an overcast day.

There's a similar scene in the Hobbit movie too... Dwalin says something like "we can't fight them all" and Gandalf says "daylight is our only chance... run!"

Finally saw it. Went to a high frame rate showing. Took a bit to get used to, but overall I enjoyed the format. Some of the scenes looked simply amazing in 3d HFR, but some instances were hindered by it. I wouldn't mind if directors stuck to using it sparingly, like Nolan does with IMAX.

That could be worse. You along with the majority take time to adjust to 48fps. Imagine a film that is 24fps with small sections of 48fps. The switch would be jarring and you wouldnt have time to adjust to the 48fps before it would switch back to 24fps. No, I think with 48fps its gotta be all or nothing in a film. Frame rate switching is jarring and only serves to distract. And before someone says that aspect ratio switiching is equally distracting I agree that, yes, it is. I only tolerate it with IMAX because the obvious benefits outweigh the minimal aggravation of aspect switching and aspect switching is confined to a small portion of the screen and doesnt effect the overall picture and action to such a large extent. Framerate switching is a whole other beast of distraction in a theater, and so far there arent many pros that outweigh the current cons that come with 48fps.

I think you underestimate how often directors already use different frame rates to achieve different visual effects.
