I think you underestimate how often directors already use different frame rates to achieve different visual effects.

I know they use varying framerates but if you start throwing in 10 minute sections that look like 48fps in the Hobbit into a 24fps film you will have problems.

It was good. Way too much cgi and I hate how Tolkien made the eagles pretty much the get out of jail free card. I roll my eyes how much of a simple escape they are. Why didn't they ride the eagles in the first place to close near the mountain? Same thing with why Frodo just didn't ride the damn eagle near Mordor. I was so glad that there were only 2 songs at the Shire and then it got serious. It was just a tad too long too.

There is an explanation for the eagles. I'm no Tolkien expert but from what I understand the eagles are essentially god-like, or angel-like beings that generally don't care very much about what goes on in Middle Earth. So they only intervene in really dire circumstances when individuals like Gandalf call upon them.

The explanation in the Hobbit book is that the men of the region will shoot at them so they avoid the Lonely Mountain. Its not complicated and Jackson could have easily included it. The fact he decided to show the Lonely Mountain so early also makes it worse. In the book the Lonely Mountain isnt visible from there. Making it visible to the company instantly raises the question of why the Eagles didnt just take them there.

The eagles can talk in the books too. In the movies they are mute.

Here is an interesting discussion on the Eagles and their "plot hole" in LOTR. Found it while searching on this topic.

As someone who felt rather nervous and wary about how this film would turn out, I must say the final result was, ahem, rather unexpected.

Time flew by so quick, even during some of the slower and dragged on parts of the film. Visually stunning with strong performances from all actors (Martin Freeman is glorious). Really can't wait for Part 2.

4.5/5

Saw it again today. This time in 3d. There was less motion blur in 3d compared to 2d. the movie was still great, And this time i listened to the music where thorin charges off of the tree. It may be the wrong theme, but it doesnt sound out of place and it completely makes the scene. Love it

From where was this gif taken?

Smaug.gif

I don't remember this scene to be in any of the promotional materials? Is there some TV spot that I don't know of?

The VERY end Lime
EDIT oops not sure what it came from. Thought you meant in the movie lol

Bought two pens one of Gandalf's staff and one of the key, Durin's Heir. this is how I'm displaying them

Very nice Vartha. I also see the One Ring. Is that the chain from the film? Either way, beautiful.

I know it's from the end. I saw the movie twice. The scene is not from any trailer or spot I have seen, and since the movie is out on the Internet with a ****** CAM quality I was wondering from where it came from.

Yeah Me too. I don't recall it in anything I've seen here.

Actually the RING and Middle Earth map are from the Toy Biz Friendship Set, the chain I just picked at Hobby Lobby for $2 lol it looked VERY close to Frodo's

Could be from a very recent tv spot. You know, the ones when they start spoiling the big moments.

Good find on the chain.

Yeah, I have been seeing them recently. One full of Eagles, Warg attack (including bunny sled) and Goblin Town.

Vartha, youre a NEEEEEERD! :p

And I want your stuff. :awesome:

I still really regret seeing it with the high frame rate...may go see it again in 2D to enjoy it better. The high frame rate makes everything look very very fake.

They are no more than a deus ex machina, just like basically every other godlike being in fiction.

Yeah I didn't like it.

Saw it for the second time in HFR. Liked it even more. By the time the party had gotten to Rivendell I was completely immersed in the film and the 48fps really made me feel like I was watching a real life Elven city. It was immense. After that point the HFR was not distracting at all, except for a couple of shots here and there.

For those in whose mouths the HFR left a mediocre taste, I suggest you give it a second viewing in the format. You might find yourself loving it, as I did.

So I don't want to come in here being a negative Nancy, but that film was entirely too long. It had serious pacing issues. The book is just too short to be expanded into a trilogy. I didn't really understand that in it's entirety until I saw the film. Since this film did alot of setting up, hopefully the second and third ones deliver.
