The trailers certainly do the film a disservice. I suggest checking out those disjointed bits of footage in context.

Burn Gorman is usually cringe worthy.

The script for his character doesn't help. His part at least is pretty minor.

RedHawk says the characters are fine and Jacobed says they aren't. I wonder who I'll agree with? Either way, thanks for the reviews you two.

Expect Fast n Furious characters and dialogue and you'll be fine I think. I wasn't expecting much more than comic book characters. IF there is a sequel perhaps a more seasoned screenwriter would be best.

Burn's character = [BLACKOUT]*engage accent* "DONT YOU UNDERSTAND THE MATH, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE YOU NITWITSSSSS!"[/BLACKOUT] :funny:

This is true, they are fast and the furious characters and the dialogue is just as cringeworthy but if you're willing to go with it then shouldn't be a problem

The FF characters and dialogue doesn't necessarily work by itself, depends how its handled. That franchise does it quite well with the camp/cheese. I already know to expect to a certain amount for this movie.

Somehow the last two FF movies just work in spades for me and I'm happy about that. Can't wait to see the monster vs. robot battles in Rim.

I mean, if any blockbuster film can get away with having bland characters it's a f-cking Kaiju film.

Nobody loves Godzilla and other Kaiju movies for the nicely drawn and lovable characters. Because there aren't any (rare, RARE exceptions can be found).

Those films have lasted so long in geek culture because the appeal of seeing big ass monsters fighting is just cool. Simple, pure, childlike COOL. I don't need my big budget Kaiju film to move me with wonderfully drawn characters, and to be honest I think it's kinda sad people would harp on it. For once it's ok for a blockbuster to just be FUN and not have to worry about it giving it's characters psych evaluations. And frankly, this need from people to have all of their films give them just that is irksome. To be fair it's a film to film kind of thing. But context and execution should come into play when you spout "BLAND CHARACTERS!" I don't need mumblecore in my giant monster Vs. Robots film.

If they don't actively detract from the movie its fine. But it would still be nice to have likeable and interesting human characters along for the ride.

Opening weekend predictions are between 30 - 45 mil last I checked. But even the people stating their predictions say it could go as high as 60 or as low as 25. At this point WOM is poor so there's really no telling how walk in business will do.

That'd be terrible for this movie.
Yep, that would be a disaster. I've raised my 38mil prediction to 44mil. Maybe it will do more than that or less but that's my prediction for now. I'd be shocked if it did 60mil at this point but anything is possible.

I understand del Toro's enthusiasm for the project and the effort he put into world building, etc, etc but I never thought the intent was franchise building from a business perspective. Doesn't look like WB did either. No cross marketing, no last minute promotional overflow. At best it was perceived as a successful one off, at worst an obligatory Jack the Giant Slayer write off.

Box Office has it doing $38M. With a 4x multiplier, yes that is unlikely, I'll take that.

It's Legendary's baby so I don't think WB cared all that much. The last minute marketing glut never happened or at least I haven't seen it. Now don't get me wrong it is being marketed but I don't see any game changing stuff happening. And please don't mention reviews, Into Darkness had 87% on RT and it's a box office disappointment.

STID had the first movie behind it, this movie is trying to stand up by itself.

I don't think they detract too much but it does kind of bring the movie to a halt at times and none of these guys are really given anything to do.

How does that negate my comment? Or maybe you weren't trying to and I just don't get what you are saying.

I really think the trailers failed to showcase more character moments with the humans. They failed on that part. More Charlie Day, more Ron Pearlman, more Charlie Huuman (sp), more Idris Elba, more Rinko. S

To the last bit about a box office disappointment. STID was theoretically suppose to do more domestically because of the first movie. This movie pulling in around the same numbers should be somewhat of a win.

Maybe there aren't any good character beats that can be cut into the trailers? They've only got 1.5-2 minutes to work with. Probably why every trailer has the "cancel the apocalypse" line.

I'm not a crazed fangirl, I have a nuanced view of things. I didn't call it a bomb, I called it a disappointment because it came under even realistic expectations. It had 4 years of inflation and 3D ticket prices and couldn't do better than the original domestically.

And we aren't talking about about a sequel to a 400 or even 300mil grosser, we are talking about a film that did 258mil. I liked the film and I'm sure a sequel is coming but it did disappoint box office wise. I suppose one can quibble with whether people should have been expecting at least a 500mil worldwide gross but I thought that was a very reasonable expectation.
