Power Rangers the movie certainly has similar elements (It actually came to mind during the fight with Otachi, a scorpion-like kaiju) but that doesn't mean that movie at all invokes the same feelings as this one, mostly because it is not good, I mean, I enjoyed it as a kid but even then the effects on Oozes mech monsters were pretty laughable.

When I was a kid, things were different. Very very different.

For example, ignoring the fact that the standard of vfx has changed over the past 2 decades and big films have always had a way of looking good for their time(especially in the mid 90's).

Dude's mech monsters in PR(that's power rangers, not pacific rim) were anything but laughable for me. I suppose that's the point, things were different back then especially for kids. As amazing as JP was for me, seeing godzillas foot was just as. Seeing spiderman swing through a city at 60mph was just as even seeing the mufasa die was just as.... Just seems like an obtuse way of looking at 20 years worth of cinema, especially when you take into account the eye and mind of a child.

'Pacific Rim' Dominates Fandango

Pacific Rim looks poised to defy the weak tracking numbers that indicated it would open to $25 million. The sci-fi flick is surging just in time for its release thanks in large to part enthusiastic reviews. The Warner Bros. release currently boasts a 76 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fandango reports that Pacific Rim accounts for 60% of Fandango's advance sales for the upcoming weekend, and it is currently outpacing World War Z at the same point in the release cycle. World War Z opened to $66.4 million. If Pacific Rim matches that haul it would be one of the summer's biggest surprises and it would silence pundits who are ready to pounce on the film.

BoxOffice.com currently forecasts a $41 million debut for Pacific Rim. It's important not to underestimate Grown Ups 2, a comedy that has been strong Facebook and Twitter activity in the weeks leading up to its release. The impact of Despicable Me 2 is also not to be ignored. Universal's animated flick should hold quite well during its sophomore frame thanks to glowing word of mouth.

The official release from Fandango:

LOS ANGELES -- According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoing destination, the highly-anticipated robots vs. monsters epic, "Pacific Rim," is the number one movie fans want to see this weekend -- scoring a sizable 90 out of 100 points on the company's Fanticipation buzz indicator. Runners-up were "Despicable Me 2," scoring an 87 in its second weekend, and Adam Sandler's summertime comedy, "Grown Ups 2" with 85 points.

"Pacific Rim" is grabbing 60% of Fandango's advance sales for this weekend. It is currently outselling another apocalyptic summertime spectacle, "World War Z," at the same point in that film's pre-sales cycle.

"The strong online and mobile ticket sales for ‘Pacific Rim' are impressive for an original film," says Paul Yanover, President of Fandango. "It's really exciting to see the movie build momentum and add to the summer season."

Based on a survey of more than 1,000 "Pacific Rim" ticket purchasers on Fandango:
• 86% said the positive online and mobile buzz for the film influenced their decision to buy a ticket
• 81% are fans of giant monster movies
• 64% claimed they were fans of "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo Del Toro.

If Pacific Rim beats WWZ's opening weekend I'll eat a ham and I'm a muslim so that's not something that I want to do. (I'm not really going to eat a ham I'm just saying how I think that the idea that the movie is doing 70mil this weekend is ridiculous.

This Ramadan is very difficult already, fasting until 9pm is horrible. I want some food!

:funny: :oldrazz:

mmm mmm ham sandwich is really tasty :oldrazz:
one of the managers at my work is fasting now too.
i should try not to eat any food in front of him, it'll just piss him off. lol.

i hope pacific rim does well though. the weak tracking report has got to be bull.

when movies like grown-ups 2 before #1 in the box-office. it is just a sign of the beginning of the end. of western civilization.

And yeah there have been a lot of really well made and wonderful movies with spectacular effects and things in the past 20 years, but what I'm pretty sure Wolfwood is referring to is the feeling invoked the first time you see the brachiosauraus or the end when the "When Dinosaurs Ruled the the Earth" banner falls down around the T-Rex. There's a certain vibe at play there and its one that Pacific Rim aims for and at times touches upon, I would agree.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. Thank-you.

And I apologize to Marvin if I sounded passive aggressive and pissy. I just got done defending myself at a different site for liking Pacific Rim, so I was probably hasty in my rebuttable to you.

By the way, if people are wondering if they should see this in 3D I say...maybe? It's a pretty good conversion and adds a bit of depth to the fights, but I don't think it's necessary. If you do, you won't regret it.

Also at my screening Guillermo del Toro talked about what a sequel would be about and revealed a couple of plot points. There are huge spoilers in this article. Don't read it if you haven't seen the movie. I'm pasting the link that way no one accidentally spoils themselves.

I don't know how he is but I've been doing it since I was 7 or 8 so people eating in front of me doesn't bother me to much.

I think you want to think the weak tracking report is bull. I think fanboys expectations were unrealistic from the jump.

I wish that they hadn't responded to the fanboys but the report is interesting none the less. The fanboys are going to look like damn fools if this movie doesn't hit this weekend. Variety as always made predictions/projections for the week and that's not going to change just because some don't like the info. Of course the movie could over perform but that still doesn't change the fact that crying about the tracking numbers is annoying and makes certain people look bad. Again if this movie opens above WWZ with no stars and awful marketing then I will never question WB's marketing choices again. How could I question a company that got a movie to a 70mil opening by only marketing to fanboys?

No it isn't.

Well then I guess everyone reading this needs to tell everyone they know to see Pacific Rim this weekend. This weekend we are CANCELING THE APOCALYPSE!!!!

what? Pacific Rim is a f... good movie. its a its a f.... great scifi adventure movie.

this is how pixar does it. 4 minutes and 20 seconds. and you get everything that you neeed for the movie. every important information. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2bk_9T482g
and in Pacific Rim its the same. i looked on my watch. i think it was 5-6 minutes. every information that you need to know about the world in PR was shown and explained in 5 f... minutes. in times where blockbusters are so convoluted that you need to spend 20 minutes on introducing the world Del Toro owns JJ and Snyder . how they started attacking, how the world lost all hope and how they started creating the robots. but it doesnt end here. in those 5 minutes we also got 2 minutes spend on the main character and his brother. he dies and the main character is sad and leaves the jaeger program. 5 minutes. and after the 5 minutes they spend another 5 minutes to get the main character back into the program and we get to know new characters. it was so simple soooooooo simple yet so effective.

this movie is one of the best paced movies of all times. its paced on Spielberg level. its also one of the best edited movies.everything flows like a clock. no bad cuts. i watched and i didnt notice any bad cuts. you can see that Del Toro was prepared. this is not a movie where the director decided to change the movie in the middle of post production because he got bored. everything has a purpose. i am so shocked. every line has a purpose to the story and characters. i am shocked how good the pacing is. no time is wasted and no scenes are dragged because the writter thinks he is smarter then everyone else. this is a simple direct movie.

i didnt like how in MOS superman doesnt save not a single human durring the fight. i had a problem how durring the fight it looked like a lot of people died. not in PR. in the first fight Gipsy Danger saves 4 people on a boat. its that simple. i dont need to see the robots saving people in every fight. give me one example and we can move along. del Toro and the writter spend 30 seconds on showing people escsaping the streets when the monster attacks. again its simple and short. where the f... is the problem? i didnt say we ned in MOS 20 mintues showing people running in safety. in PR its simple ans short. PR is a good movie.
everything has a purpose. you want to get the whole human crew in the jaeger program in danger? you writte a 10 minute scene where Mako for the first time connects to the drift. you use her bad experience with the kaju(young Mako flashback) to get her to turn on a weapon and almost kill 100 people. why? because she is scared. everything in this movie is written naturally. nothing is scattered. it makes sense. and because the writter and del toro have a brain theey use her flashback to create drama between the main male character and Idris Elba. and because they are not a stupid writter like Lindelof they used her flashback to connect Mako and Sracker(Elba). and again because they know how to writte and direct movies they also use the flashback from the main male character and Mako to create tension between other jaeger pilosts. you need information for the aliens? hmmm no problem. they wrotte scenes where the scientist characters use the jaeger technology to connect to the monsters and they get a drift experience where you get all the info that you need from the aliens. plus the main characters get the info. this movie is so simple and clear that i am angry at Goyer,Lindelof and Bay.

Stacker Pentecost ( ELba) could be just a badass character with good lines.he would be great. but no. Del Toro is not happy wit this. he needs to be more. he is a complex character with some backstory.and they needed only 2 minutes of footage. thats how you do it.

PR is also a 100% fanboy movie. its so geeky that if it bombs i will not be angry. it can not make a lot money. it doesnt need to make a lot money. this movie exists. Del Toro won............we (fanboys ) won. this is victory. yeah it will bomb or underperform.

i can not give the movie 10/10 because the white guy again saves the day,the soundtrack is boring and because all 4 pilots didnt sacrifice and die to save the whole planet. this was to cliche for 10/10. but its still a f... fantastic movie

9/10.

I grew up on Japanese monster movies and am a fan of Giant Robo.. but I didnt have much interest in this.

James B gave it 3/4 stars and said it had quite a bit of heart, so I think I might change my mind and go check it out tomorrow.

No offense DArk but there is something to be said for show don't tell, and I'm not assuming none of this is shown but if they do fly through that sort of development at that sort of pace I can see how that might lead to some criticism, particularly from the critics that have spent years campaigning against directors not letting a script breath and just flying through plot and exposition without really giving a scene time.

The first 10 mins honestly sound like the best parts to me. I hope the script doesn't move through them to make way for longer set pieces towards the end.

That being said I never find myself complaining about such things, I'm just saying I can see where some of these critics are getting their ammunition.

My sources say Pacific Rim only placed 4th on its opening day in Australia with its 224 locations earning $610K on Thursday, beaten by Despicable Me 2 (in its fourth week there), The Heat (first week), and Monsters University (fourth week) because of a crowded international marketplace. But foreign was a big part of Pacific Rim‘s grosses strategy day and date in 38 territories, and Aussies especially love action films. So this fourth-place finish is baffling. Besides down under, 6 of the top 12 markets will release - UK, Italy, Russia, Mexico, and Korea - for a total 9,500 screens during the weekend. France and Germany will release next weekend, followed by China on July 31st, and Spain, Japan and Brazil all on August 9th.

Meanwhile, a Fandango survey of 1,000 Pacific Rim ticket purchasers showed 86% said the online and mobile buzz influenced their decision, 81% are fans of giant monster movies, and 64% are fans of Del Toro.

If this movie was presented exactly the same but directed by JJ Abrams or Brett Ratner it would have been destroyed by geek bloggers. Destroyed.
i could spit JJ in the face. PR is proof that Del Toro deserved to direct Hobbit and he would deserve to get SW. he is a 100 times better director than JJ. JJ is trying to copy Spielberg. del Toro is unique IMO.:hoboj::up:

this movie is on steroids and 500mg adrenaline. its super mega fast. 2 hours of awesome IMO. :yay:

I'm not surprised this movie only placed 4th down here, there's been zero advertising for this film in any form.

this movie wouldnt be able to make its budget back if WB would spend 200 millions on marketing.no way. this is a geek movie. :woot:
