Writer also doesn't know how to write interesting characters

Which is shocking considering the prequel comic has way, way better character development and narrative exposition than the film itself. Since del Toro wasn't involved in writing it, maybe Beacham isn't really to blame for the movie

I thought the visual effects were amazing. It's really fun , but it took a lot of time to become invested in the characters. Charlie Day was a bit annoying at first , but his Rick Moranis impression grew on me. I didn't have any problem following the action either.

Don't worry, you're not alone by a long shot. This is the review that most people keep linking me to, and it tackles the cliched character flaws very well:

That pretty much perfectly articulates my opinion. And I'm not happy about it because I wanted to be engaged. I keep reading that it was fun and I have to say I wasn't having a ton of fun. It had flashes of being fun and interesting but my mind wandered an awful lot.

so you also had a problem like he has that Charlie Day connects to a kaiju brain and that the robots should be remote controlled?

i dont have a problem with reviews because i am older than 5 years. but wtf was this guy writting? how could del Toro make a movie for him where he would like the action?

he had a problem with characters in PR? fine. we dont need a high IQ to see that the characters are not the best part of the movie. but when you start complaining about the drift technology and robot fights than i am f.. confused.

Cliches aren't always a bad thing. Sometime you just want to see the good guy fight the bad guy.

The drift technology wasn't entirely plausible , but it did make things more interesting.

I edited my post to say pretty much because I don't 100% agree with the review. The only review I agree with 100% is my own. I was fine with the silly technology, that's a whatever thing to me because I don't nit pick that often.

The dialogue was easily the worst I can remember in a Del Toro film. So damn cheesy. Jax doing his Son's walk was distracting as hell at the start. I was really surprised at the direction of a lot of the film. I also am having trouble remembering a movie this loud. And it was about the time that Raleigh "checked for a pulse" that I knew I was in love.

This was pure entertainment for me. For every reason that a lot of more typical Hollywood blockbusters annoy me, this film just rocked it for me. It made me laugh, cheer, shake my headand had many moments that left me in pure awe. I was fully invested. A lot of my childhood on display on the big screen. The film is a gorgeous love letter to anime and the mech genra. There has never been a film on the big screen that looks like this.

Saw MoS and Pacific Rim back to back today. Best double feature ever. :awesome:

On one more note. This super has given us the Battle of Smallville, the battle of Metropolis, the USS Vengeance chase, the Lone Ranger finale, and now the double kaiju attack. Now five of my all time favorite action scenes in cinema. It has been a very good summer imo.

spoilers

Idris Alba likes to use a big machine to sacrifice himself and kill an alien. in Pacific Rim with the robot and in Prometheus with the prometheus ship.

haha :)

Too bad that's exactly what the Hobbit turned out to be. GDT directing would have done a lot more to make it distinct from LotR, instead we have Jackson trying to cram in as much of LotR and its cast as he can.

I have no problem with the LOTR cast showing up if they can make it make sense, which they did. I liked Hobbit1 about as much as any of the LOTR films. GDT has a tendancy to make his films pretty but forgettable to me. At least that's how it is for the Hellboy films and Blade 2. I just think in the case of those films he didn't have much innate understanding of what would stick with me, unlike oh, say....Blade 1 which I can still easily remember most everything about it.

Del Toro just works for me. Pretty much everything he does. His sense of humor and overall style just meshes with mine. With him, I really do feel like it is fantasy come to life. And he does this without any concessions.

His second favorite historical figure and his favorite restaurant? I can't quite remember. Mainly because the entire theater started cracking up. :funny:

you know that at the end we will get an after credits scene. but you also know that there can be no kaiju scene. since the whole point of the ending is that the humans won. so what do you show in a summer blockbuster?

del Toro :awesome::up:

My theater lost it for the mid-credit scene. Perfection and made my whole family quite happy.

So apparently the late Thursday/midnight showings did better then expected. Lets hope the entire weekend, heck the entire run, can do the same.

I liked this. A lot of fun. Very, very reminiscent of Independence Day, in a good way. Charlie Day and Ron Perlman worked perfectly together. The explanation where he got the name Hannibal Chau was hilarious.

Lots of pros and cons for this one, that I have to stew over.
