While he was ripping on STID before its release he gave a pretty well reasoned argument for its many problems post release.

Not liking Star Trek Into Darkness hardly invalidates a reviewer, it just proves they have a cultural memory that lasts more than 10 years.:o

:whatever:

My wife is a Ron Perlman fan...last night we saw the first ad that had him in it. Like said earlier, she was wanting to see the movie because of the sci fi/monsters part anyway...then she saw that and said "You didn't tell me Perlman was in it"
I don't see how anyone can dislike him. He's a likable screen presence.

It goes all the way back to Chud, the people on that site including Faraci were pretty much buddy buddy with Del Toro. Personally I just don't trust his opinion of Del Toro's films and I'm someone who literally only dislikes one of Del Toro's films.

He even writes articles about how box office is unimportant unless he can use it go bash J.J Abrams.

A few people including myself actually attempted to call him out on that. Right after writing that "we shouldn't care about studio interests" article he wrote another article about WB's shenanigans, sitting on a title that another studio wanted, possibly to disrupt the other film's performance. I chimed in my support after he tried to shrug it off. He actually responded. ( I go by AlanMorlock around those parts) Interesting exchange:

So, how does an article about movie title shennanigans fit into our over concern with tracking and box office numbers?

Devin Faraci Mod zcallen • 5 days ago −
Because it's interesting and it's a peek into the world of how movie titles are regulated, which we never talk about and few know anything about.

Oh wait, you weren't actually asking? You were just being a dick? OK.
AlanMorlock Devin Faraci • 5 days ago
I think that was meant as an actual question. If the wanted to be a dick they could have asked "How do the multiple articles and comments pertaining to Star Trek Into Darkness's tracking fit into our over concern with tracking and box office numbers?" Though then again that'd probably be a valid question.

I'll wait here for you to show me the multiple articles about STID's tracking

It was never the headline of the story of course but the marketing of the film and its use of the mystery box's potential effect on the box office gross made up quite a bit of this sites coverage of the film. I never said such things weren't valid topics for discussion, since I too find it to be a topic of interest, but it doesn't change the fact that such coverage is squarely of the same type of inside-baseball discussion that your recent article in response to Thomas Tull's comments questions and critiques. While Tull likely has a point, your article on the matter comes off a little odd given that, again, articles and discussions about marketing and box office performance, and the shifts in taste they indicate, not to mention appeals to support various projects and vote with our wallets, are common on this site.

Devin Faraci Mod AlanMorlock • 4 days ago −
Talking about marketing isn't inside baseball. If talking about marketing is inside baseball, then talking about posters and trailers is inside baseball.

Poll-generated statistics about how a movie will do in the future, where the numbers aren't even public and are in-house? That's tracking, and THAT is inside baseball.

Talking about marketing is talking about how you are or are not excited for a movie. Talking about tracking is talking about whether or not a movie will make money.

But by all means, let's keep trying to find small hypocritical slip ups. That's a great conversation to have about movies.

AlanMorlock Devin Faraci • 4 days ago −
I never called you a hypocrite, but even the marketing aside, box office performance and the importance of going out and supporting certain projects are common points of discussion here. In that context the Tull article just came off a little odd because if the amount of industry info available to general audiences has led to problematic trends in modern movie fandom, then BAD is certainly not above the fray, or at least not to the extent that you hope for it to be. I truly enjoy most of the site's content though. Keep on keeping on, and depending on your time zone, Happy Fourth.

New Trailer For The Pacific Rim Game Is… Kinda Rough

[YT]d61Fjgyyhrg[/YT]

This trailer isn't for Guillermo Del Toro's Kojima/Kanye-approved, GLaDOS-featuring robots vs. monsters film. No, it's for Yuke's fighting game based on the property. And it is, unfortunately, not really looking so hot.

Robots are cool. I like robots! But if you're going to try to sell me a game about robots fighting monstrous Kaiju from the bottom of the sea, you've gotta show me at least one Kaiju. If I'd watched this ad and had no idea what Pacific Rim was, I'd think that the Kaiju were just more robots.

Furthermore, I don't remember that music from the movie, but if you're gonna make a soundtrack for a Pacific Rim game trailer, all you have to do is play this track:

[YT]sH_6iFYiryY[/YT]

Put on that ass-kicker and I wouldn't even care if the game itself didn't have any Kaiju.

Okay, okay, I'm probably being overly harsh. This might be an okay game. Though if they're going to make a game based on Pacific Rim, shouldn't it be a Kinect fighting game where you and a co-op partner have to perfectly coordinate fighting moves to command a Jaeger? Will Kinect 2.0 allow for mind-melding?

Both the game and the movie are out on July 12.

Dear god, he can't even see his hypocrisy. You did a nice job of taking him to task.

I like Devin's reviews even if I don't agree with him, but you can't ever post on his site with a different opinion than everyone else. It's almost all groupthink there.

Anyway, back to PAC RIM. Almost here!

I'm seeing this at 7 tonight. I'll have a spoiler free review up later.

I've had that happen too. They said I had to leave so they could clean....I said I paid to watch it to the end so they can clean around me.

I never chase anyone out who elects to stay and see the whole movie, even if there's no post-credit scene. (Like you said, they PAID to see it, and I'm not going to begrudge them that.) But in my experience during the past few years, most of the people who stick around (80%) don't give a rat's ass about seeing the whole movie... it's mainly "is there something at the end?" or they leave if there isn't.

That's the thing that irritates me.

I've always been a credit reader. Can't catch it all like I can at home with a DVD...but for decades I've liked watching them trying to catch some crazy/unusual credit inserted in there.

And people seem to forget that it wasn't Marvel who created the idea too.....The MUPPET MOVIE (1979) had Animal after the credits telling people to go home...the same with FERRIS BEULLER'S DAY OFF (1986), Ferris walks out and asks what people are doing still in the theater and tells them to go home. There are a few more, but that comes to mind quickest.

Airplane! had an end credits scene with the guy still waiting in the cab from the beginning of the movie ("I'll give him 10 more minutes..."). William Shatner had a post-credit scene in Airplane 2 as well.

There was little stuff like in Aliens, which didn't have an end credits scene, but as the credits ended you could hear the aliens scrambling around. You could also hear Darth Vader breathing as the Phantom Menace credits ended. The POTC movies all had end credit scenes too.

Also like in Airplane! After "Best Boy", they had "Worst Boy: Adolf Hilter". They also had a "So there." after the copyright text at the end of the credits. :funny:

Devin is a bit of an embarrassment to the concept of journalism as a whole.

I honestly will be surprised if the film is a hit domestically. It has lousy marketing, no stars, competition from Grown Ups 2 and the second weekend of DM2. It's going to need a 60+mil opening weekend to have a shot at the budget. It can't just open to 40-45mil unless it's wom is just out of this world.

It's not a perfect comparision Darth but what other film would you compare it to?
The movie would have to hit before you can find a strong comparison. It actually has to perform first.

My family has played the name game since I was little. It is part of going for us all.

This is really shocking to me, as the policy at the theater I work at is not to even enter the auditorium to clean until either the credits are completely finished or the theater is completely empty. We are specifically not supposed to go in there for risk of being a nuisance to the viewers watching the credits, as that is still considered part of the film. The idea that some theaters feel the opposite and actually go in there and try to make people leave during the credits is a bit mind-boggling to me, lol.

I know the movie hasn't succeeded or failed.
Obviously I'm guessing right now.

At my local theater the way you enter the theater is a little ramp that goes up into the theater. The cleaning crew loves to stand near the part of the ramp that spills out into the theater, waiting to clean. Like they are attempting to make you feel like your imposing on them somehow.

I know. My point is most of theses comparisons can't really be made until we see how the film performs. Heck, it could be the next Pirates or perhaps Transformers for all we know. The general audience might love it.

ESPN + Pacific Rim

Should have been doing this for a month. But that is strong in the marketing sense.

A few more moments of Keira Knightley at the end of AWE. Totally worth it. :yay:

I don't think that there is a problem with me saying that so far it is "looking" like another fanboy cult favorite that doesn't do to well. I'm not ruling out anything but I see no reason to change my prediction unless we get info that the tracking is rising.

And of course even that doesn't mean anything because although WWZ beat it's so-so tracking both White House Down and Lone Ranger went under their tracking figures. BTW, What do you think the movie is going to open with?

TV Spot #22!

I really like what they are going for with the staging but tbh the vfx have never looked more like a unreal engine cut scene. Probably cause they're is little to no live action element with this scale(and the lighting too).

I'm hoping the plot and characters are strong enough to counter act that. That's usually the key in these situations.
WB is smart to add the hastag. People will look it up seeing as they don't anything about this property andddd, twitter seems to love this movie.

I understand general descriptions. That is different then making direct comparisons to other films.

As to opening, I honestly have no idea. But right now $40-45m is probably pretty close. This film will live and die on the international stage.

I'm gonna say $50m, but I'm hoping and praying it'll be more than that.

Seriously, it'll be like Christmas around here if Pacific Rim somehow trumps Grown Ups 2 majorly at the box office.
