I have seen that film (the Hidden Fortress) and no Star Wars is not a remake. Did Star Wars borrow some queues from that film? Absolutely, but it was not a remake, official or unofficial.

Yeah if you want to see what Lucas truly ripped off, look no further then Frank Herbert's Dune.

Yeah. What Star Wars borrowed from The Hidden Fortress was its sensibilities, tone, scope and archetypes. It was a very epic movie that seamlessly shifted from drama to comedy thanks to Kurosswa's artful direction.

Also the characterization of the cast from the cynical rogue to brassy princess to te comedic sidekicks, really helped Star Wars with its own dynamics.

There are also the scenes he directly lifted.

I hope when I come on here Friday 3 or 5am or so that I am raving about the film. I've liked nearly every film I've seen this summer and don't anticipate Del Toro making a complete suck fest. I'll do my best as far as reviewing it goes.

And I really do hope that it can overcome the marketing and blow the tracking numbers away. Del Toro deserves some mainstream success and he will be able to do whatever he wants after that success which is a good proposition to me.

Because... it is.

There is literally nothing new about this movie. Nothing. It's every cool scene from popular sci-fi cartoons mashed together with every fall back character/dialogue cliche from popular anime. It is clearly del Toro's passion project, and good for him that he got to make it. It's freaking beautiful to watch. Best visual effects I've seen this year so far. But man, is it dumb and unoriginal.

And this basically sums up my hesitation on seeing the film.
It seems like visually it's amazing to watch, but I've been reading reactions from early screenings and it seems a good amount were not impressed with the actual story.

That's been my concern for this film as well. I don't mind if it's not brilliantly written, I just don't want a dumb action flick. Not from Del Toro.

The OT Star Wars is my favorite thing, but I know its origins. And yeah, I love Herbert's Dune as well. The two mini-series from early last decade really got me into it and I read all the Frank Herbert written books in a month.

There is a threat, and a group of people have to get over their individual baggage in order to work together and overcome it.

Gotta love Poni Boy trying to show that other reviewers think the same as him, let's not forget there are tons of positive reviews out there, and that a lot of people are LOVING it, you might not see the appeal Poni, but to others, they will.

The script I read was pretty solid though, so yeah.

I don't think he is denying the good reviews. I try to find reviews that explains my feelings on a film as well. Of course I will write up my own review but sometimes other reviews can get across your feelings better than you can.

I try to find reviews that explains my feelings on a film as well. Of course I will write up my own review but sometimes other reviews can get across your feelings better than you can.

When I'm writing a review, I browse a couple other reviews, not to copy them, but to see if they touched on any point that I forgot to mention.

It doesn't give him a pass with me. Still don't like him. I know people have mentioned that he's a smart fellow and gives a new perspective on things. But when he goes out of his way to trash Pixar but praise Transformers 2, it completely throws out his argument, or whatever point he was trying to make.

Who knows my fears may be unfounded but they are there. I'm always skeptical when I walk into a theater, always. I've seen too many films not to be.

One could say FF has lame/bad dialogue plus subpar acting. But the last two movies a majority of critics liked because it was still a well made and fun movie. No reason Pacific Rim can't fall into that category.

I love Del Toro but I don't think he is big enough to have earned that pass yet.
