I just hope that the critics aren't giving Del Toro a pass. My fear is that the critics are okay with bad dialogue and lame acting as long as Del Toro is directing the film. Who knows my fears may be unfounded but they are there. I'm always skeptical when I walk into a theater, always. I've seen too many films not to be.

I feel like that they are sometimes. I have no proof of it however, but just a gut feeling. I think its because Del Toro is very friendly towards his fans and the online community (bloggers and journalists) that they're rooting for him as an underdog. And I've met him twice and yes, he's an awesome person. But if a product doesn't work out, you need to call him out on it.

One could say FF has lame/bad dialogue plus subpar acting. But the last two movies a majority of critics liked because it was still a well made and fun movie. No reason Pacific Rim can't fall into that category.

That's exactly what this is except Fast and Furious has likable characters whereas this they're just bland as hell

I would say Vin Diesel's Dom is the purest hero we've had this Summer.

Critics (Drew McWeeny, Devin Faraci, and maybe a few others) who liked PAC RIM also liked Furious 6. Don't get me wrong, I loved FF6, but Vin, Paul, and the writing aren't the best. Maybe they're not just giving it a pass!

The more I hear about this film and see trailers the more I get the feeling I'm going to be coming down on it in similar fashion. I could tell something was off when the first trailer hit. Needlessly complex for what kind of movie it is was the thought I kept having. It's not enough to just say "monsters showed up". Oh no, they've got to be aliens, but not just any aliens...extra-dimensional aliens, and not even just that: ED aliens with a portal in the sea. I was rolling my eyes already.

Plus they need to international it up by referencing foreign pop culture through it all which only the geekiest people will get(Kaiju/Jaeger...WTF? but ultimately not a huge deal in and of itself, just kinda annoying). But they make up maybe 1-10% of the audience on any movie like this. Most won't have a clue or care, I suspect.

Then they pulled out the "Giant Robots need to be driven by 2 people with their minds melded through a computer" for some reason. My eyes were practically back into my brain at this point. Uhm....why? And I don't mean why they use it inside the movie. I meant why have this choice from a writing standpoint at all? So you can cram more bodies...ahem, I mean fully fleshed out characters we can get behind into your movie? Just seems like stuff you wouldn't want to do with such a simple premise.

And there's the part that bugged me. When doing a film like this you have 2 choices:

A)You're going to go real simple and just keep to the main reason anyone would eve want to go see this film: giant monsters and robots hitting each other; or

B)Go real detailed so as to make all the minutia of how all this works worth something story-wise.

This movie looks to be trying to cut it down the middle and I'm just not sure that can work. Don't tease my brain if you're not willing to fully engage it. Otherwise, let it sleep while I ooh and ahh at all the pretty sfx and action.

Anyway, that's kind of what the marketing for this film is telling me this film will be like.

That's been my concern for this film as well. I don't mind if it's not brilliantly written, I just don't want a dumb action flick. Not from Del Toro.

I'd love to leave a GdT film and not immediately forget it within the next hour. Because that's Blade2 and the Hellboy movies for me.

Again, GDT's characterizations for his cast are very, very broad. It's the world that creates that is interesting.

I just don't understand - and I know there are many variables and red tape to go through - to attempt to create ICONIC NEW CHARACTERS for this generation. They don't all have to be The Joker or Jack Sparrow, but just stomaching endearing and memorable. Seems like Pixar has a grasp on that sort of market.

It seems like characters like Luke Skywalker, Mad Max, Indiana Jones, Marty McFly just came out in the right place, right time by the right people. Now we rely on the derivative.

But who am I to judge since I haven't seen the film yet. But I don't know...I guess that's my problem with today tentpoles in general.

Faraci is too buddy, buddy with Del Toro for me to take his opinion seriously. I agree that as long as the characters are likable and the movie knows it's dialogue is ridiculous I don't care if it is a "dumb" film. And I'm just saying it's a fear of mine right now, I almost always get like this before I see a film. I liked White House Down and Fast 6 for goodness sake, I'm a dumb action movie fan. If that's what Rim is, fine as long as it's good.

tracking at 41mill opening weekend and 3rd place not good this movie should be making 60 to 70 mill opening weekend

They spend 180M making it so I'd say $70M at least. With a standard big summer movie multiplier of 2.5X that would still leave it $5M short of covering it's production budget with it's DOM gross. Probably should open to $75M at least. The overseas grosses were always gonna be what saves this movie but DOM still has to do it's share. At this point it could be that it just barely passes $100M DOM. That'd leave $300-350M OS has to make up all on it's own.

Poni Boy's just upset that Lone Ranger flopped so he's taking out his aggression on Pacific Rim :D .

Did ANYONE ever give a crap about the Lone Ranger? Big news to me.

It's one thing when critics try and classify the difference between a film with "substance/character" from a film without it, but when they start to classify levels of fun within the latter...
just seems like a joke, not a fan of the entire establishment.

I haven't visited the site in years but can anyone tell me if the aicn talk balks are liking this film or trashing it. If it's the latter that's a shame considering it was made almost exclusively for them.

Plus there is no sign of shia or bay.
I suppose it hasn't been released yet.

Yet the movie has been getting mostly positive reviews unlike Man of Steel.

Honestly what is the problem here? Have you seen the movie?

For the most part, for the characters in the film, the arrival of the Kaiju is pretty much treated like weather. In the world of the film, they are a fact of life that people deal with, like hurricanes, but the attacks start to become more frequent and there are those that study the kaiju and attempt to find out where they come from.

And you really take issue with just the terms Kaiju and Jaeger? That's just the words used within the world of the movie. Jaeger isn't a reference to anything, its just the German word for hunter. Kaiju is a word that literally means giant monster. What is the problem? Do you hate that Star Wars calls its mystical samurai Jedis?

This movie isn't opening like Inception, it has more chance at Inception type legs which which it really needs.

What's it have to do with Inception?
Both are from Legendary/WB, they have a similar budget, both released in July, both not an adaptation, both come from nerd friendly director's and both have positive reviews so far. There are differences but they have a lot in common, you think that it was an accident that it has a similar release date as Inception?

I don't know, this movie looks like it should be a lot of fun. The good reviews are encouraging to me. I'm always a bit suspicious when Harry slobbers all over a film, as I often find his tastes to be infantile, but I'm trying to put that aside. Overall I'm not expecting this to be the greatest thing ever. I'm just looking for a good time at the movies that will thrill and entertain.

Plus, Charlie Day.

I'm kinda excited to see this movie now. The reviews are encouraging.

While I was excited to see Charlie Day, I've got to say he was pretty much the worst thing about this movie.

There were a few shots where I literally had no idea what the hell he was going for.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus actually sums it up quite well:
A solid modern creature feature, Pacific Rim is bolstered by fantastical imagery and an irresistible sense of fun.
