Loved it, the jaegers and monsters looked amazing on the big screen. My only minor complaints were the first 45 minutes or so was a tad slow and Hunnman didn't do it for me. I like him on Sons, but he was terrible in PR.

the movie basically follows the same path as ID4 if you think about it...at least it seemed that way to me.

which is not bad, i love ID4

Yes expect this movie didn't have Will Smith and The Fly giving us endlessly entertaining and charming performances.

I've never seen Hunnman in SoA, but if this was any indication I don't want to. He was really bland in this role, no feeling whatsoever. This might be the definition of "phoning it in"

i actually really liked Elba and tho scientists...but i love Charlie Day so...

This movie was ****ing awesome and the graphics were stunningly realistic, it didn't look like flying wax puppets. My only complaint was Rinko Kikuchi's performance, she was just awkward at times and caused some of the scenes to drag. Other than that, this film was great. Idris delivered in spades, easily the best character in this film but Charlie Hunnam was pretty dynamic as well. It's what the Godzilla films could have been if they were made in the modern era and it was glorious.

Who is Hannibal Chau?
Did he get the scar hiding in a public Kaiju bunker?
Did he try to drift with a Kaiju?
Is he the reason the for the Kaiju invasion?[

God, this movie was fun. Can't wait to see it a second time in 2D. While the 3D was actually impressive, I always feel the visual quality gets muddied to some extent.

Visually, the film is masterclass. The lighting, the shot composition, it's all impeccable. There is real weight behind the Kaiju and Jaeger. They never move too fast as to defy their massive size. The action scenes are big and thunderous, but are given room to breath. No super fast editing or shaky cam nonsense.
I'm saddened some people are saying you can't tell whats going on in the action because you most definitely can.
The performances are all fine to really good imo. Hunnam is getting a bad wrap. He is charismatic and likable. Nothing great, but good. Elba rocks it, Day rocks it, and Kikuchi is impressive as well. Ya, her English is rough, but that's kinda the point. the girls got soulful eyes and really sells it.
And this movie has more heart then some would have you believe. The Drift scene where we learn about Mako is gut wrenching. The little girl is awesome in those scenes.

The only real complaint I have is that the finale isn't as strong as the double Kaiju battle. But that's about it. This is the most pure and fun time at the movies since Super 8 imo.

^^ Agree with almost everything you said.

One of the most enjoyable movie this summer (IMO.)

The movie has some character development, not much but enough to get you to care about the characters, and some heart.

The action scenes are CGI but well done, as you don't get the weightless Monsters or rubber kaijus, their movements are such that you get a sense of how much massive they are.

Edit: I hope that it makes enough money to break even, It is not tracking well, but a good word of mouth may help it.

Absolutely LOVED it. 9/10
This movie is what I wanted IM3/MoS and ST 2 to be. This is Transformers with an emotional core. I hope you were paying attention Michael Bay.

Safe to say I really enjoyed this movie. To be honest the action didn't do much for me so much as the plotting of said action, slow punching and grappling isn't for me. Great stakes however. I really just wanted to know what was going to happen.
I actually found the actions and discoveries of the scientists to be alot more engaging mainly cause their heroic journey had an air of unpredictability to it. I'm against giving film enjoyability numbers but my opinion is that it was a pretty decent movie and an awesome movie if you are into this niche.

Three things really bothered me though.
The sound track and two things I see as plot holes till someone explains them to me.

-That whole emp thing not affecting Gypsy. Really? All that tech in his cockpit is immune to the laws of physics?
-The whole it takes riding a kaiju to get through the drift, but escape pods can get through just fine....
I also wouldn't have minded stronger casting. For example the lead is supposed to be an old American wash out, maybe go for a Quaid "type" not some new hot face. Considering how the young Aussie pilot feels about him that would have worked wonders for me personally. Especially during their conflict scenes.

Lot's to like, at the end of the day I'd say it was as fun as ID4 but without the lead or the president. I walked away with the same level of enjoyment I get out of one of GDT's Hellboy pictures.

Not all films have to excel at the same things.
For example you don't hear anyone talking about the lack of emotional core work in the Raid or even the Fast films.

That being said, there were some nice moments in PR but I didn't walk away in a well of emotion per say. Really liked the 1st and last quarters of the film.

I agree. I was more engaged with the drama than the action but unlike IM3/MoS and ST 2 I actually liked the action. Seeing the movie again and a day 1 blu ray purchase.

I'm planning on seeing this Sunday in IMAX 3D. Really looking forward to it, glad to see mostly positive reactions here.

As far as box office goes, I don't know if this can bomb harder than The Lone Ranger. As long as this film can at least be marginally profitable, maybe that sends some sort of message to Hollywood that they should invest in original franchises rather than trying to keep digging for the next untapped adaption.

As long as this movie doesn't flop, it stands a chance to do bigger numbers with a sequel. I saw an interview on AICN with the writer Travis Beachman, and he said he and Del Toro have put a lot of thought into the universe and how future movies would play out. It's hard not to root for something that has that kind of passion behind it, so I'd love to see these guys get a chance to dig deeper into their mythology.

That said, I'm still not expecting this to blow my mind, I just hope for a good ol' fashioned time at the movies.

I'm seeing this baby tonight in 2D at the Amc cinemas, super psyched I really hope I dig it.

Never understood this sentiment, some of my favorite films ever have been either sequels/reboots and or adaptations...
Some of my least favorite films have been none of the above. Just curious why people prefer the latter so much in/of itself.

I love adaptations too. Obviously I'm a huge Batman fan, I adore the Nolan trilogy and have enjoyed a good deal of the comic book movie boom. There's a thrill in seeing characters you already love adapted to the big screen.

At the same time, there's a thrill in exploring entirely new worlds too where you have no expectations of how certain characters "should" behave and can just go along for the ride. And I think currently we're probably missing out on some great potential original ideas because the studios want a sure thing. There's room for both, but a little more balance would be nice.

Look at the 80s when you had things like Back to the Future, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Alien, Terminator etc. It's not nearly as often now that you see an original concept for a big blockbuster spawn sequels. Sure, Avatar will have sequels but what character in Avatar will be anywhere as iconic as any character in the aforementioned movies?

I think it'd just be cool if we got to a point again where movies themselves were generating some iconic characters of their own. I think creativity and originality should be encouraged. There will always be room for adaptations too.

I had the same thoughts about the
escape pod ending. But my friend said that you only needed a kaiju to go their dimension, not ours so i guess that works.

The bigger plot hole is how radio signals can still work in another dimension.
.

I could tell what was going on most of the time. The finale was a bit tougher bc it was underwater and the big Kaiju didn't have much detail to him.

Loved this movie. Film of the summer for me. But I just can't help regretting that this is gonna cheapen an Evangelion movie if it ever happens. So similar.

The movie did the same in late shows as World War Z and could only manage 14.6mil according to box office mojo while WWZ did 24.5mil. It's very fanboy frontloaded. I would be surprised if it hit 40mil. It should do 36 to 40mil. Which isn't good for a movie with a near 200mil budget. It's going to have to have some serious legs and I say good luck with the brutal competition this summer. And Grown Ups 2 did 16.3mil which was expected. Another bad hit Adam Sandler comedy.
