People need to learn how to speak English in America.

Why are all the Presidents white? You tell me--why the Presidents are all white, and none of them are black, mexican, or Asian. What is the criteria of becoming a President? How do you become a President?

1. You have to be white

2. You need alot of money

There has never been such thing as equality or civil liberties in this country, and never will be. LMao. Equality my ass. :down This nation of ours will fall like the Great Empire of Rome, and I just can't wait for that day! :)

This is a bigoted, prejudiced, racist country like any other nation (and one day it will fall) where how much an individual makes has more worth than his character. :down

Nope, just need to be born in the United States - race has nothing to do with it.

If you can't speak the country's native language as your first, then beat it. People come to the U.S. for better opportunities, better lives for their children, better education for their children, and a nicer way of living - the least they could do is learn or know the language instead of DIS-RESPECTING the country that made their family's lives better.

LOFL! You know that many of the people who built this country didn't speak English, right? You know that many of the people who continue to make this country great don't speak English, right? Did you know there are parts of the country where people are native born and still don't learn English because there's no need to? Go run around Little Havana in Miami espousing your viewpoints and see how long you last. Get over yourself and quit being a biggoted racist, vato!

We no speak English

Have you ever wondered why English is not the official language in America? After 200 plus years of English being the predominantly spoken language — what else would the native tongue be? And the last time I read the U.S. Constitution it was written in English.

For gosh sakes! ...me no speak Spanish either — so we're even!

The more I read about some of the goings on in Washington — the more I am convinced the time for straitjackets for many has come and gone.

Did you know in 1998 the Republicans voted 238-182 to oppose making English the official language, because many were courting the possibility of making Puerto Rico a statehood? The Washington Times reported in 1998 that the majority of the House supported the statehood proposal, and at the same time fell short one vote of an amendment that would support English as top language in the good ole' USA. Don't ever underestimate the wild hairs of Republicans — those hairs will stick up, when you least expect them to appear.

Now I know many people have and will sell out their souls for money . . . but trying to sell the country out for votes is a bit extreme — wouldn't you agree?

We all know that Puerto Rico and Mexico are both dirt poor countries — and it looks like America is in line to become poor too, if we continue down this destructive pathway of giving all of our resources and money away. Just who is going to benefit most with politicians wooing Puerto Rican voters?

While many wayward politicians are concentrating on giving favors to Hispanic voters for election support, they are forgetting their base supporters. I am still trying to figure out what these misguided folks are eating in their Wheaties every morning!

Apparently, the Puerto Ricans are balking becoming the 51st state, because their language and culture is nonnegotiable. Well, Americans can't say the same, because they are on the bottom of the "totem" pole when it comes to Members of Congress supporting their traditions, American culture, etc., in favor of courting foreigners. But refusing to support English as the official language is the pits!

And if this isn't enough anti-American jargon — if you recognize God and country publicly you're offending other cultures.

I find it hard to believe that 55 percent of the American people polled favor a Puerto Rican statehood making the official languages English and Spanish. This is just another preplanned "bogus" poll to give the appearance Americans favor welcoming Puerto Rico as the 51st state.

The vast majority of Puerto Ricans are adamant when it comes to being anything other than antagonistic toward Americans. They assert up front — they not only prefer their native language — they are not the slightest bit interested in learning English. So, why should we take on another country's headaches? Besides, two-thirds of the Puerto Ricans are living in poverty. And until we can take care of our own people living in poverty, and have affordable healthcare for our senior citizens, our government has no right to squander away the money needed here in America. And I have come to the conclusion we need accountants in Washington D.C. — not lawyers. How far do you think housewives or big companies would get balancing their checkbooks — if they operated in the red to the tune of trillions of dollars annually? Probably about as far as the closest federal prison.

I think sometimes we would be better off if we didn't understand English, because the words to describe how our government has let us down politically, morally, and financially — cut to the core and fiber of our souls.

Americans should not have to fight for their inalienable rights over and over again, considering these rights are written in stone. Every step that you take you are walking on the "invisible" blood shed by a soldier who suppressed their fear in order that you, your children, and your grandchildren . . . could pursue the right to life, liberty, and happiness.

In the meantime — we're heading to a modern day "Tower of Babel."

And that's just my opinion!

You do realize that making English the "official language" of the U.S. wouldn't change anything at all, right?

It may not be DISRESPECT, it may just be lack of time and money. It takes both time and money to learn another language. English as a second language courses are not necessarily cheap and the times the courses are offered are not necessarily compatible with their jobs / lifestyle. If American's want immigrants to learn English the courses should be FREE! Otherwise, do not expect immigrants who are pobably saving every penny they can, to spend money on something that they do not deem to be an absolute necessity to life.

When my parents came to Canada they didn't have any money to spare for English classes, they had 4 children to keep in clothes, they had to buy a car, they had to pay rent/mortgage. Both mom and dad worked. Mom worked part time to be home for the kids when they got out of school. Dad worked long hours and shifts. Eventually they saved enough for a downpayment on a house (and had 2 more kids). My Dad tried his best to speak English, but he never did it well. He never had the chance to learn because he was busy bringing up 6 kids, clothing and feeding them. Even when he finally had the time and money there wasn't an English as a second language course anywhere close to where my parents lived.

My dad paid his taxes and worked hard until his retirement. My parents brought up 6 children, 1 went to college, 3 went to university, all of them hold down a job and pay their taxes. None of them has ever been to jail.

Good immigrants don't need to speak the language, they just have to be willing to work hard, obey the laws and teach their children to do the same.

Newsflash, b****: Puerto Rico is already a US territory. The fact that we're currently not doing anything to help them with poverty is just plain stupid. God knows we have the money-- hows about spending a little less cash on our inaugurations, Washington? Cracka ass crackas.

Pathetic, I'm really sick of this crap! If I went to another country I'd learn their language. My Grandfather was happy to come to America and give up his language.

LOL, no, shut up.

I have no problem offering free classes to teach immigrants English. Back in El Paso, you could find these at the local elementary, and scondary schools. My who point is that it's just, in my opinion, that if you want to live in a country, you should at least learn it's language, rather than expect them to learn your's.

Someone please quote this portion and tell me specifically why an entire country should learn the language of the people who choose to immigrate there, rather than the immigrant learning the language of the country they are moving to???

Figures, you're too stupid to be able to answer the question. You are simply the kind of person who enjoys goading people until they snap and beat the crap out of you. Look, it would be a lot simpler if you just admit that you don't have the mental capacity to answer simple questions. That way no one will bother asking you anything, kind of like wearing a sign that say, "My name is Darthphere, and I'm a dee dee dee!"

I just realized, you're only 19. No wonder you think you know everything. You haven't been around long enough to realize you don't know s***!

I was once told by a former coworker that everybody in Texas should learn how to speak Spanish.

Which is preposterous. If you move into a country, you should try to have a passable knowledge of the language there. The natives should not bend over backwards to accomodate you, that's unfair.

And while some claim there is no official language, the United States's Constitution and all government documents are written in English. No other language. I think that qualifies as official.

I've already said my piece in this thread about being understanding of immigrants and their difficulties learning the language, so I'm not going to repeat myself.

I'll just say we have some damn intolerant mother****ers around here.

I just said we should learn their language to poke fun at the situation. I was being sarcastic. Yes, we should learn to speak to others but under no means should we learn 200 different languages in order to communicate with all the different immigrant groups here. It would be easier for them to learn english. As far as the un official language thing? Well, I think we need to adopt our official language(s) quick, so this can no longer be an issue to clog up message boards.

I like that you added this line:

"I just realized, you're only 19. No wonder you think you know everything. You haven't been around long enough to realize you don't know s***!"

After using this line:

"My name is Darthphere, and I'm a dee dee dee!"

Using Carlos Mencia, quite possibly the crappiest comedian ever in yuor post just pretty much made me lose what little respect I had for you, and it was a little.

Now to answer your dumbass question once again, no one is expecting you to learn spanish, but people will continue to speak it, you either learn to live with it, or shut the **** up. Pretty simple.

Also, I wanted to point out another flaw in your whole argument. Free classes huh? Youre all for that. What about when you realize theyre only free to the students and theyre getting funded by your tax dollars. Are you going to be happy then? Because as it is right now it seem we have unlimited funds to build walls across the border but when it comes to actually attempting to help them, it all comes down to a half penny tax on all your purchases. You would be ok with that?

You still did not answer the question, so here it is again...
Tell me specifically why an entire country (not just me specificaly) should learn the language of the people who choose to immigrate there, rather than the immigrant (from any country) learning the language of the country they are moving to.

They wouldnt, and theyre not being asked to. Whats so hard to understand about that?

The classes in El Paso were offered for free to the parents of the children who attended the school. Well at least at the public school my daughter went to. And I have no problem with my tax dollars doing something procutive in the community, and offering classes for immigrants to learn English is a great example. Now if the classes are availible, then it's still the responsibility of the immigrant to take them so to help themselves achieve a better life for themselves. As for the whole wall idea, that's just stupid. It's a waste of money and won't solve any issues with illegal immigration. That problem won't be resolved until the Mexican government fixes it's own economic problems, but that's an entirely different debate.

Darthphere said:

So, the country isn't being asked to learn Spanish for the immigrants, and the immigrants aren't being asked to learn English?? Actually that's the whole arguement. I'm of the opinion that immigrants should learn the language of the country they are moving to. And I'm being told that's wrong. That an immigrant should not be required to learn the new language, but the other way around. The country that allows the immigrant to move there is responsible for learning the language of the immigrant.
