Rockstar Red Dead Redemption

There's more aspects to ACW combat than a bunch of guys lining up in a field and playing shooting gallery with each other. Skirmishers, for instance.

Still, I'd prefer the main portion of the game be set after the war. Playing through some flashbacks to CW battles the main character was present at would be pretty sweet though.

All this recent RDR talk here has got me replaying it after a long hiatus and man is this game still beautiful.

Part of me noticing that more now is that when I initially got this game back in the day, it was at first being played on a 27" CRT and now it's currently being played on a 60" plasma. It's crazy the difference 4 years can make.

How would you guys feel about the game being an urban western?

No. There's enough "urban" games being shat out everyday. Red Dead, for me, is unique as it's a full blooded western. It should really stay like that. The games industry needs an ass kicking western game series and changing Red Dead to an urban western would be a detriment IMO.

The 1800s/early 1900s western setting is what makes this so fun and ubique. Setting it in modern times (I assume thats what is meant by "urban western") would just be meh.

If he meant having a more urban setting, like say a city in that time period, I would be fine with that, provided there is still lots of wilderness.

Would be interesting for example to see 19th century Liberty City, then take a train to... the West.

Yeah, the western setting it one of the big positives. Losing it would make it a different game entirely.

This is fine with me.

Long as it's only a part of the game. An urban setting, but the game should definitely have vast expanses of wilderness. Starting out in such a setting might even make me appreciate the latter more.

Yeah one of the things I would like to see especially with the next gen tech, are much larger developed towns and settlements.

The towns in RDR even Blackwater all seemed too small even for the time period and setting. The above image is how I would have liked Blackwater to look.

But that doesn't feel like the classic western setting.

It looks more like the prohibition era.

That's 1880's New York City, well before Prohibition (1920).

What I'm suggesting is that you spend some time in an urban environment, and then go West.

I think people would appreciate the West even more after spending some time in such an environment.

Or even work your way toward the city. Have that culture shock. I guess there'd be culture shock either way though.

It'd be pretty cool to see a late 19th century city brought to life either way. Sort of Red Dead meets GTA (even though cars don't exist yet).

A city like San Francisco would make sense in a Western setting; it was still wild enough to appeal to the cowboys and forty-niners of the era, who OH HEY FOOTBALL!!!

Yeah the towers were a bit smaller then one would hope for, but I seriously doubt that could be helped. After GTA V, I expect we will see far more extensive, alive towns and cities.

What if it's a sequel set during WWI?

Red Dead Trench Warfare.

[BLACKOUT]No I'm not being serious... But now that I think about it.... I would love a WWI game.[/BLACKOUT]

While all for WWI games, I don't really see how you can relate that to a Western though.

What I wouldn't mind, is a game that is sort of set between GTA and Red Dead, that deals with the Prohibition era, that could incorporate World War I.

But, Red Dead, really has to be set some time in the second half of the 19th century, unless they want to do another "end of the Old West" story a la Redemption.

Still, I think there's a lot they can still explore that they barely touched on.

I actually wouldn't mind if the protagonist wasn't a quintessential Western protagonist. Maybe a Native American, a former slave or a Chinese immigrant.

There's a lot of possibilities.

You can't really... Other than at the end of RDR (I'm not putting this in spoiler tags.. if someone in this thread has yet to play it.. Oh well.) you started to play as Jack in 1914 which was the first year of WWI.. Maybe you could play as Jack as he goes off to fight when America gets involved with the war.

Like you said though it wouldn't be a Western anymore. :p

Also nobody liked Jack.

I see mentions all the time about continuing with Jack as the protagonist but even taking the time-frame out of it, did anyone enjoy playing as Jack?

On my first play-through I was disappointed I didn't complete more of the side-missions because doing them as jack just took a lot of fun out of it.

Jack's biggest problem he was young and he came on the backside of one of the most painful endings in recent gaming memory.

Did Jack even have missions? I mean, we got to kill Ross, but that was about it from what I recall.

The only missions you could do as Jack were the side quests not finished as his daddy.
