Rockstar Red Dead Redemption

I found that post of Pat's as well as his attitude toward other cultures in general to be pretty disgusting overall, but it wasn't really genocide was it? I mean, didn't most of the natives die from diseases the Europeans brought over? Doesn't "genocide" imply intent?

The disease thing was during the 14/15 hundreds when Columbus came over. I mean, Native Americans were still dieing by disease during the late 1800s, too. But I don't think the death toll was as great. I honestly don't know if you could truly count it as genocide, but does it really matter that much? Many Native Americans were killed. Like, a lot. So much so that their population is dwindling to this day. Maybe not truly genocide, but still a terrible thing.

Oh man, an "Indians pack" would just get paper skinned people up in arms about nothing.

 I REALLY hope this is joke. But I won't comment just in case it is.

Nope, that wasnt a joke. I dont see why people get so damn worked up over that situation when that very same thing has happened since the dawn of time and most likely, will happen again. Sure, its awful, but thats history, its filled with awful scenarios like that. Same thing with slavery, i think it was revolting, but it was nothing new and i sure as hell dont think the african american community deserves any kind of 'reparations' for what some old racist white men did 100+ years ago.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
--- George Santayana

"Awful things like that happen all the time" because people lose their knowledge of history. When things like the Holocaust, slavery, and Native American genocide are forgotten, then the cycle will repeat again and again due to the ignorance of stupid people with no sense of history. *That's* why people strive to keep the memories alive.

Intent was always there, from Columbus on up through 19th century America. There are plenty of actual written records of American officers in both the 18th and 19th centuries deliberately distributing blankets infected with smallpox to various tribes, knowing full well that the disease would destroy those tribes. That's intent, and that's genocide.

I alwasy felt this game had (since it came out) some of the best quotes ever.

I haven't seen any interest on Rockstar's part to do anything with Native Americans. At all. It might just be something that they don't really want to touch.

I did read somewhere, during the development of Red Dead Redemption, that they had considered covering race relations alot more, particularly with black people during the Old West.

And that it was just way too ****ed up to get into. If Rockstar thought it was way too ****ed up. Which is saying something, considering this is Rockstar.

I do remember how much heat GUN got for they're depiction of Native Americans.

I don't think RDR shied away from racism very much at all. There's not much in the way of overt racism towards blacks that I can recall, but the whole Professor MacDougall thing didn't shy away from overt racism towards Indians in the slightest. And it's basically honest --- very true to the kinds of ideas (pro and con) floating around at the time.

More to the point, the racism towards Mexicans is completely overt during the Nuevo Paraiso sequences. And Rockstar explores both sides of the coin, showing more than a few of the Mexicans to be equally as racist towards whites and Indians.

All of this is belaboring the point, though --- obviously, neither Rockstar nor I want to get into any damn deep exploration of race and ethnicity in here (either from a liberal or conservative or objective stance)....I just want to play the damn game, and have the opportunity to play as and/or battle more Indians than just some misplaced Apaches (who, speaking of "Gun," are leftovers from that game).

Plains Indians -- whether Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho or whatever -- would add some great color to the costumes and setting. And it would be adding one more of the staple concepts/ archetypes/ stereotypes of the Old West, which RDR has otherwise almost completely covered.

I really hope it's a single player. Undead was great and due to my network settings or something i could never fully get into the mp mode. I know this has been a problem for other ppl as well.

It also sucks not being able to play as marston in free roam. Jack will never do.

Also to chime in the US-indian wars have almost never been seen from the perspective of the natives (not in any video game i know about for sure), it would be kind of refreshing to see a story from there.

The Free Red Dead Redemption Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack DLC Is Coming in September

As previously announced, we've got a special and completely free bonus pack of Red Dead Redemption DLC coming as a show of appreciation for the awesome long-term support for the game's multiplayer modes since its release in 2010.

Today we can confirm the title for you: the Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack will feature new fan-favorite multiplayer characters by popular demand (including a certain grizzled ol' gunslinger as pictured above) as well as new multiplayer locations for players of Deathmatch, Grab the Bag, Gang matches and other popular online modes to get busy in.

We expect the pack to be finished and available for download on Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network in September.

Oh, also, yes – for those who are asking about a return to the original Undead Overrun multiplayer mode settings – we are planning to release a title update in the lead up to the new free DLC pack which will address that.

Free DLC?! :D

*reads article*

For multiplayer... :(

GAH.

I barely ever go online, but it's nice to have free DLC of any sort.

!!!!
How can you people *not* play RDR online....?!?! :wow:

You're missing out on well over half of the game's appeal! Don't get me wrong, I love the story/campaign modes in both RDR and Undead, but honestly, there is literally no end of things to do in multiplayer mode. There's infinitely more challenges to complete, there's tons of gang hideouts to raid, there's horse racing, undead wave battles, multiplayer gambling, gang shootouts, free-for-alls, claim jumping, capture-the-bag games, co-op modes with all new missions....all with the option of playing with *tons* of different characters instead of just the Marston Boys.

Multiplayer is like an entirely new RDR game in and unto itself. And if you don't like the human company you're keeping (granted, there's a lot of PVP players who are beyond annoying as hell), then you can still play multiplayer *entirely* in Private mode and still get credit for all the challenges.
