If I was a big fan of the character and brand, I'd be welcoming the resurgence. Because that's what it takes to get the ball rolling again, a new film. The origin is the best place to start for a new generation, and yes, that means a different approach. Just as there are different interpretations of Batman, Superman and so on. A total remake would have been really pointless. If a sequel was made they could stretch out even further on their own. In my opinion Robo 2014 isn't a scar on the franchise to be shunned. What other franchises do is their own business.

Your exactly right, despite the characters origin on film, that's the way I feel too. It doesnt matter what media a character is born. A great character is a great character. And every great character gets "remade" "rebooted" or "reimagined". In this case, Re-built.

I saw the film, I'm way too tired to write my full thoughts here at the moment, but I did like it. I loved some parts, and hated others. I have to let it stew before I go into detail with how I feel.

But I will say, the black suit w/visor down was ****ing awesome. The night scenes on the bike were absolutely beautiful. The 2 middle shoot out action scenes were right up my alley. Both creative and very RoboCop. I can't wait to see them again.

The black suit, visor down, with bike = pure unexpected win. The sound effects sold it, [BLACKOUT]especially when meeting Clara and David. Clara's fingers running along the metal was a nice touch.[/BLACKOUT]

I honestly didn't like the silver suit much at all, it felt clunky and too digitally tampered with. The black was refreshing. I will miss it.

I will gladly get into discussions about the quality of this film, I'm just too tired, it's been a long day and I have a winter storm to deal with tomorrow haha. But I can absolutely see how this film split audiences. I can absolutely see how some hate it.

I went to see this in IMAX, and right off the bat I was disappointed in the lack of oomph the original RoboCop theme had. As the title appeared the music just felt too quite and hollow! Needed more bass or power to it. It's hard to explain, but I was disappointed in that. I was able to keep my expectations in check for the rest of the film.

i really look forward to those bike scenes. the short glimpses of them shown in the trailers look cool.

By far and away the highlight scenes for me. Everytime he jumped on the bike I perked right up! The action on the bike is just perfect IMO.

[BLACKOUT]The way he maneuvered it, it was apart of him. Stopping on a dime, shooting backwards and around while riding it, busting down doors and blasting through, weaving between traffic, tracking down thugs at the speed of (red and blue) light. My word so epic! [/BLACKOUT]

I didn't hate the Robocop remake, but it's definitely my least favourite of the Robocop movies. Yes, I even like Robocop 3 more than this (which gets unjustly maligned by many people). Besides the action scenes and effects, this was flat out dull and boring. I really wish they could have expanded the opening scene and have Robocop take on Iran, now THAT would have been interesting... but instead they opted for a dry run on the original.

Really wanted to like this movie but it just came off overall dull to me and too much like Robocop:The Sensitive edition. Was pretty bored by the end. Just lacked impact and more importantly the overall fun of the original and Robocop 2.

Thought the casting was solid, so no real issues for me there. There was also some great and horrific imagery of Alex realizing whats left of him, that was very well done. Decent opening too. Unfortunately ed 209's where underused by the end of the flick.

6/10

Its above all 4 prime directives though right?

I just got home from seeing it and its what I expected, just meh to me. I didn't hate it, I guess 6/10

Great feedback. Interested to see your thoughts after you've slept on it. The motorcycle stuff was pure badassery, particularly at night. I'm really bummed that they didn't keep the black suit. I hope in the sequel, fingers crossed, He somehow goes back to it or there's another iteration that's even better.

I'm hoping a sequel gets off the ground.

Me too and I.hope he gets the black suit again. It was awesome

Alex Murphy has been a great character once. That was the first film. He hasn't been great since. So we really aren't talking about a Batman or Superman. Great characters with rich history.

I have loved the original Robocop since I was a little kid. It has always been a favorite of mine. When I first heard about a reboot I was curious on how they could remake it and do it some justice, so my mind was open. Reboots are fine as long as they do something cool with it and not make an embarrassment out of the name.

The trailers did nothing for me, I thought it looked generic. But, I kept an open mind anyway and DAMN I was impressed with the film. I loved it. The story was really well done and original. I liked they really went into the ethics of making a man into a machine. It had a great cast and the action was pretty damn good too.
My only issues were that it really didn't have a good villain like the first one did. Also, even though I can deal with it, I prefer his right hand not be a human hand. The only other thing was, I loved the silver suit he first had on. I kept thinking "that is really so much better than the black." I do like the black one overall, but the silver was better. [BLACKOUT]I geeked at the end when they put the silver one back on him.[/BLACKOUT]

I really hope this does well enough for a sequel, I think they can take this to interesting new areas.

He was a great character in this. They took him in very interesting and thought provoking directions. Especially with his family. Kinnaman rocked the role too, I'm excited to see what he does next.

The body reveal scene I thought this was something quite daring that differentiates Robocop from standard superheroes in a very adult way that I really appreciate. Along the lines of Hulk and other Frankenstein monsters I feel Robocop is the most tragic hero of all for this reason which is hammered home in this movie. Padilha has said in interviews that everyone wants to be Iron Man, Batman, etc, but no one wants to be Robocop, not even Alex Murphy and his initial reaction in this scene reveals quite a bit about the gravity of Alex's situation as well as what kind of person he is and how much he cares about his family...

As what's left of his body is revealed you see the shock and horror in his face. His immediate reaction is that he wants to die. Even in the midst of this realization and making this decision, he stops and considers exactly how to do it and how to tell his family without them having to know the horrible truth he's just witnessed. To me this says a lot about the character of Alex Murphy in a short span. What kind of man he is, what kind of cop he is. How many superheroes would immediately kill themselves if they could? You know if Alex had been able to move he would've offed himself right there.

New interview with Padilha. Offers a lot of post game insight. He says stuff I hadn't heard him say before. Excerpts:

From the first script until the final day of shooting, we changed a lot. We changed a lot of scenes on set. We changed a lot of dialogue on set. I shot scenes that were not in the script.

I had freedom on this movie, even though it was my first movie here, and that’s why this movie is different than the regular superhero movie. I like some superhero movies, but I have to say that they all feel the same to me.

We managed to state sophisticated and philosophical positions in the movie, and we managed to do scenes that were different. We wanted RoboCop to transform as we were watching Frank Sinatra sing. That’s crazy, but we wanted to do it because we thought it was cool. But, we had to deliver on the preview, or we would have lost control of the movie. And when we did, it proved the point that the audience is sophisticated. The Matrix is a very sophisticated movie and it really worked, so why not do that?

I think the original ROBOCOP is a classic in terms of it having cultural appeal and being unique in a couple of ways, but I don't think it's a masterpiece.

Yep, I totally agree with that.

Nonsense. A great character is a great character despite its rich history. If he's great "once" guess what... He's still great. Batman and superman have had their fair share of crap interpretations. And Only a few truly great ones in 75 + years. Robo has only been around for about 27 years. So why don't we Let Robocop have a rich history then, and interpretations have to start somewhere. It is now and I hope it continues.

Robocop is fantastic as a character in this film, the whole movie revolves around him, and he gets to breath. In fact the new film is a prime example of WHY Alex Murphy is such an amazing character. Just because he hasn't had as "rich" of a history as batman or superman, means nothing.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Took my gf and a buddy who weren't looking forward to it but will go anywhere with me and they both came out surprised by it lol. Nice.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the film, especially seeing it in all it's glory in IMAX. I thought all of the casting was solid, I particularly LOVED Keaton in this movie he just oozed charisma and showed proof he needs to be back in big budget mainstream films again. I thought some of the action scenes lacked the punch I wanted (and I hated some of the shakey cam stuff) but seeing Robo actually shoot and end the lives of some bad guys made it not as "toned down" as most are claiming.

I only wish the film was about 15 minutes or so longer to get a little bit more of Alex Murphy's character and him interacting with his family a bit before he was in the suit so quick, I really liked Joel as Robocop himself as Alex I felt a little more was to be desired.

Overall I gave it an 8/10

^ good interview. thanks!

I can't believe it but all the whining I did about not liking the black suit and I actually ended up not minding it at all in the film, the silver still looked better and PERFECT, but I did not have a problem with the black, it actually shot very well.

i didn't realize it was that many remakes. is this the most remakes released in succession in cinema history so far?
No, just the most blatantly open about it. Most movies that are remakes used to try hiding it by changing the title, character names and swap out some details. Lately they haven't even put effort into hiding it. A good and a bad thing.

Robo slaughtered everyone in that warehouse sequence! While taking a beating. I know people will argue that it was bloodless because it was all shot in the dark and through infrared/nightvision but I kind of think that only heightened the intensity and made sense with his capabilities.

People that said this film was "gore-less" obviously need to start wearing glasses, though it wasn't a lot there was blood splatter in this movie.
