RoboCop Reboot - Part 7

thats true, he was getting destroyed by those ed-209s and was able to take down a few only because he was fighting smart.

Yep, and he still needed help from Lewis and the other cops as well, they took an ED-209 down also.

ed-209 also dominated robocop in the original, but then he had the advantage of...STAIRS!

Its amazing how silly that sounds when typed, yet the scene is amazing in the original!

The reboot is probably the second best Robocop film ever. (Third would be Robocop 2 which isn't as bad as some folks might say, when compared to RB 3 and those stupid TV movies.)

 spot on, I like Robocop 2, but the re-boot is a better movie than it with better and smarter ideas and more focus on drama.

i haven't seen the tv movies but i heard they are meant to take place after the first movie so they ignore the sequels. just how bad are they?

As many here had hoped Robocop opened number one in China with over 20.5million while remaining number one in Brazil for a second week no surprise there. It's international numbers have been pushed to a 136mill and worldwide at 186mill

It's so bad that the actor playing Robocop is shorter than the females. And it's crazy how his make-up (when his helmet is off) is awful looking. Just cheap.

Then there's an evil Robocop double, and a dude with a skull mask. It's really bad. It's bad Canadian television.

On a side note, the makeup without mask from the original is incredible.

 Had a feeling China would eat this up, any movie with robots in they seem to like. No reason it cant make $50 million in China now, if not more. $200 million WW will get surpassed easily for this re-boot, making a sequel more of a possibility, good news for the likes of us who enjoyed it.

I agree I think it's good news for the possibility of a sequel and possible franchise. I'd like to see what the creative team behind this could do with a second movie.

Same here, if it happens I really want Padilha to return, hopefully they give him more freedom on it as well.

I think the majority of the best parts of the re-boot came from Padilha.

hopefully that international box-office money isn't too diluted and enough profit is made to greenlight a sequel. i want to see where they can take this story.

also, going through tumblr looks like lot of the kids like robocop (there's a lot of detractors too of course). but seems like lot of the post-90s kids who grew up without the 1987 one are liking the new one.
some of them have even said the new robocop got them to look up the original and they liked it as well. i think this is one the coolest things that can come out of the remake. fresh eyes.

Yeah i want Padilha to return and continue on his story.

..yep, this does seem to be this year's Pacific Rim! Very good to hear!

That is one of the cool things about re-makes when they are good, people will go and look up the original and watch it, means both movies get a whole new set of fans. And the re-make was actually a good movie, which is always a plus.

'New RoboCop crosses $180m worldwide, sequel possible?' - Den of Geek

"In much the say way that last year's Pacific Rim eventually hit courtesy of its non-US take, RoboCop - on a smaller scale - may be going the same way."

*Fingers crosssed*

Awesome stuff, its going to cross $200 million WW no problem, beyond that who knows what it could make.

yup and it's great to see a new generation discovering the classic robocop.
growing up in the 80s, watching robocop was a sort of rite of passage for my friends and i.

but the kids in high school or going into college now don't have that same attachment and maybe only have a vague idea of what robocop was. while some of them that looked up the original felt it was too dated and couldn't enjoy it, there were some who were like "wow, this old movie is so good and badass!"

this is always good for fans of robocop.

^Good stuff, you are always going to get people who think stuff is dated, for me, the original has aged really well apart from the scene of Dick Jones falling to his death, but yeah, some people these days just want new and modern stuff.

Conceptually, some great stuff in this script. Acting was solid, too. But dramatically the movie kind of falters a bit in the final act, the technical credits are solid but not particularly inspiring, and the action is only so-so for the most part. Works better as a sci-fi thinkpiece than it does as a popcorn flick and yet there are large portions of the runtime dedicated to the popcorn elements. the SLJ stuff just doesn't quite work for me. it's hammy satire at odds with the rest of the film's tone (it basically feels the most Verhoeven-inspired but is not dry or funny enough to really hit that mark or justify itself).

but i did really appreciate the thought that Padilha put into this movie. it was very evident.

Directors like Padilha should try and do their own stories when they are trying to get into the Hollywood mainstream instead of going for the licensed stuff.

Trying to get Halo off the ground was a disaster. Instead, Neil Blomkamp did District 9

^They would struggle to get funding for such projects though, thats why I think they go for the big movies 1st and if they are successful they can do more of their own stuff.

I do hope Padilha comes back if Robocop 2 happens though.

I would love to see Padilha come back for a sequel but at the same time I wouldn't mind seeing another great director come in and do their take as well.

not every up and coming director can get peter jackson to back them up.

The din grows louder...

"The RoboCop Reboot Might Have Earned Enough To Justify A Sequel"

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/RoboCop-Reboot-Might-Have-Earned-Enough-Justify-Sequel-41949.html

"China Box Office: 'Hobbit 2' Dominates, 'RoboCop' Opens Strong"

"The rebooted RoboCop took $20.67 million in its first three days, showing on 99,502 screens with 3.4 million admissions. Considering early March is not a great time for cinema-going, with Chinese New Year over and the kids back at school, this counts as a significant haul."

Again, it's articles like that where it's not easy thing to judge what gets a sequel. it's such an arbitrary thing when it comes to green lighting sequels. There's no template to compare what works and what doesn't when the first film wasn't a smash hit. Riddick 3 got made because of Vin making a deal with Universal when he cameoed in fast and furious: Tokyo Drift. He regained the rights, and had leverage because Fast/Furious was such a huge hit for a studio that needed hits. I'm rambling I know.

But then where's the Real Steel sequel, which was a hit?

A similar situation to Robocop is Pac Rim. Pac Rim didn't make money in the US, but it's domestic film. It's all about the US dollar. If it bombs in the States, usually the international BO and home sales makes up for the lost. But like what I've said before, the profit splitting and percentages get convoluted with international sales. Sometimes, you have other studios get involved too.
