STAR TREK BEYOND debuted in China with $31.3M this weekend--107% higher than STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

that doesnt mean the total overseas box office is gonna top into darkness that headline is deceiving

That is very true.
As disappointing as the box office was for Beyond, Paramount was wise to move it from its original release date July 8.
it would have been up gobbled up by The Secret Life of Pets.
So, as bad as it is, it could have been far worse.
might have done better earlier like in april or may

Well, do people even know it's the 50th anniversary of Trek or has that been so downplayed that it wouldn't even make much difference?

For such an icon and cornerstone of not just science fiction but pop culture it has really not gotten very much attention outside of the genre circles and only brief coverage in mainstream media.

I wasn't expecting a parade and huge fanfare but the low level of activity is certainly surprising.

I can't help but worry that Discovery is pretty much set up for failure even it it's fantastic.

It is because sticking it on an already destined to fail streaming service guarantees it.

Just saw it. Which homages to Anton were confirmed?
Well, in the bar scene, the third glass that McCoy poured was for Anton.
And when Kirk mentions in the final scene, "To Absent Friends" the camera swings to Anton immediately.

I think the bar scene was filmed long before Teaching died. I. Story but was a tribute to Kirk's dad, meta textually, Bones and Kirk pouring one out is much more likely a Nimoy tribute.

Throughout most of the world it is going straight to Netflix. Hopefully if and when all access falls apart it will shift there in the US as well.

Kind of pissed I can't watch Discovery on Netflix or Amazon. ST is the original barrier breaker as I like to call it and deserves a lot more love than it gets.

What is so strange is how history repeats itself. I. The 70s, the plan was to have a second Star Trek show to launch a 4th TV network. Eventually, Enterprise was used to launch UPN. Now they're trying to launch an online platform with this new trek show.

The situation with All Access is interesting because it really is being treated as it's own network, separate from the normal CBS. The normal CBS production executives aren't involved. From a fan perspective it seems like Trek is being shrugged off but the studios are betting big. Not that it's a good idea...

I assumed that was just some sort of naval tradition they coopted for the scene. As if they always pour one to represent fallen comrades.

.....how would a scene filmed with Anton in it have been a tribute to his death when it was filmed while he was still alive??

Not gonna lie, I DID suspect them of changing the editing of it, the way they cut right to him when saying "fallen friends."

I can't see Trek carrying a subscription like this on its own.

Trek is in a worse place right now when it comes to fandom recognition than when Enterprise aired and they would never have been megalomaniac enough to pull this insane stunt.

They'll die. They'll fail horribly. Songs will be sung about the 2017 Trek massacre.

Saw this today, i really liked it, my 2nd favorite, Trek 09>Beyond>Into Darkness

Justin Lin has talked about how he reinserted that shot Of Anton after his death.

Saw it lastnight and am pretty shocked at why i didnt see it sooner. I thought it was fantastic. It deserved more from the B.O than what it got. I guess the problem with this one was the buzz for it wasnt as big with other movies overshadowing its thunder. Definitely one of the best blockbuster movies ive seen this year.

The week the movie came out, Pegg mentioned that Lin was actually still working on the color timing. I wonder what will he different on Blu-ray.

Up to $318 million WW now, still not amazing, but more respectable at least.

Would've been double that if Paramount lifted a goddamn finger.

I liked the film, but I felt sad there wasn't a pre-title sequence with a big "STAR TREK BEYOND" logo at the beginning. Same with the font in the end credits.
I wanted continuity in that regard. Oh well!
