Why were they building a starship in Iowa of all places?

I'd ask why on Earth period, since they normally build them in space. Maybe some would be built on Earth for whatever reason. But Iowa?

I have read (on more than one occasion) where the writers have stated that there will be no previously established TOS character as the villain.

Whether it is true or not is another thing.

I doubt we will hear anything from the set for at least the next few months. Rumour has it that JJ is really p****d off about the recent set pictures that were leaked.

That would be cool eventually but I actually can't wait to see a more mature Pine & Quinto take Kirk & Spock to the next level in the next 3 or 4 films. They are going to be great.

It won't surprise me, although Abrams should've known that after both Avengers and TDKR have had massive leaks with on-set photos, his own movie won't be immune from snipers with long-lens cameras. If he wants to keep it absolutely hidden, he should've shoot the whole thing inside a studio.

If that happens, I would prefer it to focus just on Picard, maybe in his earlier days on the Stargazer, instead of having him miraculously meet up with the entire Next Gen cast in one movie. Maybe a young Tasha, Troi and O'Brien gradually phased in would be okay, as it appeared that they had been with Picard the longest.

i know the guy from sherlock was cast but i wonder is he a classic villian or a new one

I think that the studio is trying to build buzz by leaking the photos.

I haven't been keeping up with the production of this film, but I was curious as to if the cast has stayed the same or did they have to recast anyone?

If Benicio Del Toro was supposedly cast as Khan but later dropped out of the film, did they cast an unknown as Khan (if they were indeed going with Khan) or was Benicio Del Toro going to be an original villain that they now have a relatively unknown playing on the down low?

Devin Faraci said his source mentioned that the screenwriters had Gary Mitchell in the original draft but JJ and Paramount didnt like it. So instead Gary was featured recently in the IDW comics based on JJ's universe.

i think if they had got benicio del toro he was going to be khan! i think he is dropped from the film beacuae no way ben cumberson the guy they got from sherlock is khan material! he is playin someone else or a new made up villain.

I agree but I think it was going to be a small part and not as a villain. More of a foreshadowing thing.

Even 10 years from now they'll be 41 & 44. By then the characters of Kirk & Spock will have a lot of experience under their belt & so will be written with that in mind and I think they'll look great as slightly grizzled veterans. I'd love it if they (& the rest of the crew) did hang around for 30 years though!

It's possible, or he's possessed like Gary Mitchell. Then again, it could also very likely be the "Worf Effect" in action again, where the metahuman strength of a character (Spock in this case) disappears when it suits the plot.
