How to kill a franchise 101 right here. Clearly solo n last jedi had an impact on this.
As did the quality of this movie
This year is the most competitive in history. But that said, you'd always expect a Star Wars Episode film to be near the top. Only Endgame and Lion King should have beaten it.
This. Amazing that people are still trying to minimize the damage that TLJ did.Opeing weekend is more about the last movie and if it creats or in this case destroyed hype for the next movie. Legs are more about quality of this movie and i am seeing a lot better reactions towards this movie then i am for TLJ.
Opening Day:
The Rise of Skywalker (2019): "Updated PostTrak for Skywalker shows guys over 25 (43%) in attendance followed by men under 25 (24%), females 25+ (22%), and females under 25 (10%)." (audience 67% men, 32% women)
The Last Jedi (2019): "Opening day demographics show the film played to an audience that was 58% male vs. 43% female and of that audience 37% was 25 years old or under."
First 2 weeks:

* MPAA Reports: "Comscore/Screen Engine's 'PostTrak' collects domestic survey data for all films in release in at least 800 theaters, which links box office grosses to gender and ethnicity of attendees. The surveys are conducted during the first two weeks of a film's wide release."
percentage values in table may not sum to 100 percent due to rounding

It's funny because $175M is still a lot of money and a number most studios would kill for as their OW for any of their blockbusters, but for a finale in something as hugely popular as Star Wars I definitely see it as underwhelming, especially when the third films in this franchise have increased in the past from their predecessors. I never imagined this going sub $200M and hearing about its OS in certain territories doesn't sound very promising either. It really makes me wonder if it could go below $1B WW which would be an utter disaster IMO.

If I’m allowed to be a bit bitter but still make an argument...Opening Day:

TLJ had the cliffhanger Ending from TFA to draw audiences in - TROS has nothing - it is a train wreck - many don’t care for spoilers and Are intentionally reading spoilers - I Thought of punishing KK and co. By buying a ticket to another movie and going in to see SW but decided not to - instead I am going to see it tomorrow on discount Tuesday. I have watched all previous entries on opening day except the OT. Again it’s not going to make a billion. KK is the equivalent of Zack Snyder and Kinsberg to DC and X Men respectively.
Star Wars will rise again no pun intended. A KOTOR trilogy with Favreau Filoni with Lucas consulting as well as Keanu as Darth Revan will be legendary and could be the biggest thing to hit the box office since Endgame. It’s gonna take a lot of work but The Mandalorian is a great sign that there are still producers who get Star Wars and have Lucas’ blessing
FWIW per deadline, Disney is saying 175.5 for the weekend. That tracks with BOT’s insider estimates, which saw a good Sunday hold and bumped the initial 173 estimate to 176. BOT’s early Monday read is 28-30. Percentage-wise, the Sunday and Monday drops are in line with what Desolation of Smaug had on the same calendar in 2013.
In any event, bottom line is RoS should comfortably pass 200 today.
It's going to be a coin toss to hit a billion. Either way, to lose 50% of your box office in the space of 2 movies is something to be greatly concerned about. There's the very real chance Joker makes more than SW this year. Think about that. A film that cost maybe a tenth of what this one did.

If I’m allowed to be a bit bitter but still make an argument...
...I really want to think that the drop in opening day attendance from female attendees could end up some day being correlated to the decision from TLJ to pursue Reylo, with word of TROS honoring *that* part of TLJ’s plan, of all things, actually damaging it a little bit with the female demographic.
I’m a WASP male... but if I can be a little petty, I want LFL and Disney to be denied the profit they could have had because they decided a shallow abusive romance was the way to go for defining the core of their Trilogy, and the defining story element for the female hero and male villain, and incidentally caught the POCs in the crossfire as well.
Live by Reylo, lose money by Reylo.
TROS only made 9 million more than Batman V Superman. That movie struggled to make it to $330 million and likewise TROS will struggle to make $500 million domestic and $1 billion worldwide isnt happening
Luckily for Disney, this was released in the holiday season unlike bvs.$376,2 mil WW is way to big of a sum to rule a billion out plus its too early at this stage.
That’s why I want a “correlation” and didn’t ask for a “causation.”It seems too convenient associate the drop of women audience with TLJ following an abusive romance.
There are many other reasons why women audience could drop a film apart from an abusive romance.
Yup, very good. Early read on Tuesday from BOT is 20-21, which would be a better hold than DoS back in 2013. So it should be something like 226 going into Christmas Day, and Wed thru Sat should all be in the low to mid 30s at least. Ought to be somewhere in the 380 neighborhood after next weekend. Maybe more, could touch 400 if Xmas week is kind.Is that a good first monday?
Yes that too. December legs ftw.Luckily for Disney, this was released in the holiday season unlike bvs.
