Star Wars: The Old Republic - Part 1

Star Wars: The Old Republic producer’s stream discusses the penultimate expansion chapter

June 6, 2016 21 Comments

Players have struggled against Emperor Arcann and the Eternal Fleet for some time now, but Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s next story chapter will be all about taking that fleet down in one movement.

A raid on an Eternal Fleet battleship will be undertaken with the end goal of taking control of the fleet, dealing with the GEMINI units and their connection to Scorpio. The most recent producer’s stream (which you can watch below) also revealed that the chapter will allow players to recruit the failed Jedi trainee Guss into the fold.

Subscribers will receive early access as well as a special wall decoration. Players can also look forward to a galaxy-wide competition between the light side and the dark side, with an event tracking all player decisions across multiple characters to determine the nature of a new companion that has never been seen before. If you don’t have time to watch the full archive just below, you can check out the summary from Dulfy.

Hyperspace Beacon: Seven things you didn’t know about SWTOR’s SCORPIO

June 21, 2016 Leave a comment

Knights of the Fallen Empire has truly changed the storytelling ways of Star Wars: The Old Republic. And even though it’s popular to flame the game because of the lack of focus on endgame, the casual player and those who are interested in fun, character-driven tales are likely to be enjoying the monthly chapter releases.

This month, we get a treat because we actually get two chapters in one month. Next Tuesday is early access to the next chapter, The GEMINI Deception, whose title makes no sense unless you’ve been playing all the chapters so far. However, you should at least recognize that it features SCORPIO, the droid from the Imperial Agent class story. SCORPIO happens to also be one of my favorite characters in the entire game. She interests me because she really doesn’t want to be there, but she sticks around for very devious reasons, even when she is no longer compelled to be there by programming.

If you haven’t guessed, this article is all about the diabolical droid SCORPIO, and also if you haven’t guessed this whole article will be full of spoilers for both the Agent story and for Knights of the Fallen Empire. If you’ve not played through the entirety of Knights of the Fallen Empire or the Imperial Agent at this point, I’d first ask, “What’s wrong with you? Do you not like good storytelling?”

then I’d also suggest that you not read any further until you have done both or if you care about being spoiled. (That’s my spoiler alert by the way. There are major spoilers beyond this point.)

Rumor: SWTOR’s next expansion might be Knights of the Eternal Throne

June 27, 2016 53 Comments

Dulfy’s spotted a rumor that Star Wars: The Old Republic’s next expansion might be “KOTET” — Knights of the Eternal Throne, as some players are guessing.

A Redditor found the acronym buried on the Star Wars Celebration website.
It could just be a misspelling of the equally ugly “KOTFE” acronym, but our credits are on it being the real deal, especially since EA has pulled the reference already.

SWTOR: Knights of the Eternal Throne confirmed for this fall

July 16, 2016 121 Comments

Move over Fallen Empire, Knights of the Eternal Throne is about to become the newest expansion on the Star Wars: The Old Republic block. BioWare confirmed this weekend that the next digital expansion for SWTOR is, as many thought, Eternal Throne.

“The all new expansion adds more of BioWare’s trademark cinematic storytelling, as well as exciting new game features in one of the largest updates the team has made since the game launched 5 years ago in 2011!” the studio crowed.

According to BioWare, SWTOR currently has accumulated 87 million characters. Knights of the Eternal Throne has its own website up, although there isn’t much there yet. The studio did unlock the first episode of Fallen Empire to anyone who wants to try it out.

Hyperspace Beacon: Wild speculation about SWTOR’s Knights of the Eternal Throne

July 19, 2016 20 Comments

Who else was disappointed by the Star Wars: The Old Republic presentation at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend? I had really hoped that it would be more, but I guess it’s difficult to give too much information about a story-driven expansion when the last expansion hasn’t even finished its story yet. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t tease something other than a vague slide key art.

Today, to make up for the lack of information, I am going to propose some wild speculation about Knights of the Eternal Throne. As I do this, I should warn you now about two things. First, there will be spoilers contained in here. If you don’t want to hear about some of the things that happened in the latest Knights of the Fallen Empire chapter, then stop reading. Secondly, everything that I am speculating about is just that: speculation.
If you’re still reading, let’s have some fun.

The Battle of Odessen, the final chapter of SWTOR’s KOTFE, arrives August 11

July 27, 2016 30 Comments

It was always going to come down to this. It’s time to bring an end to Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s latest expansion story, and that means that players will be facing off against Emperor Arcann in the ultimate showdown for the fate of the galaxy.

Even with the events of the past chapter still fresh in everyone’s mind, Arcann’s forces are moving to the alliance base of Odessen, and the Battle of Odessen will set the stage for the game’s next expansion and the future of the Republic, the Empire, and the player character. Early access for the Battle of Odessen begins on August 9th, while the chapter will be available to all subscribers starting on August 11th. Check out the trailer for the climax just below, keeping in mind that there are going to be more than a few bloody noses by the time all is said and done. And if you’ve been waiting for the story to be done before jumping in to experience the whole story… it’s almost time.

The final SWTOR chapter for KOTFE drops a few hours early

August 8, 2016 4 Comments

At approximately 5:15 p.m. EDT, players in Star Wars: The Old Republic received a warning that the servers were coming down but didn’t learn why unless they turned to the forums. According to Community Manager Eric Musco, BioWare was “bringing all servers down as [it deploys] Game Update 4.7 and Chapter 16.”

Players logging in this afternoon were greeted by an announcement stating, “Error: Your current game version does not match the server’s, please restart the game.” After some investigation, the SWTOR team discovered the source of the issues, and according to Musco, decided that the best solution was to move the scheduled maintenance up a few hours.

The maintenance only lasted a couple of hours, coming back online at about 7:50 p.m. EDT. Players who are granted early access the final chapter of Knights of the Fallen Empire can now see how everything ends, instead of waiting until tomorrow morning. And for all of those people without early access, you get… a brand-new experience opening cartel packs?

STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC PRODUCER’S STREAM PROMISES MORE GROUP CONTENT AND MORE ON THE NEXT EXPANSION

August 12, 2016 39 Comments

Have you already played the final chapter of Star Wars: The Old Republic’s Knights of the Fallen Empire? Did you feel that it sort of failed to wrap up the story definitively? According to the latest producer’s stream, that was entirely intentional; this last chapter was the end of this expansion, but not the end of the story, and there’s more to be told with the upcoming Knights of the Eternal Throne.

More information about that expansion is due for release with the New York Comic Con Cantina event in early October. The stream also confirms that players can look forward to more group content, although the developers aren’t ready to talk about what sort of content is in development.

The exclusive HK-55 chapter is due out in September, with a much more lighthearded tone than the other story chapters thus far. You can check out the archive of the producer’s stream just below, or you can just catch up by reading Dulfy’s summary of the information therein.

Listen to five new Star Wars: The Old Republic music tracks

September 6, 2016 9 Comments

Players with long memories might recall that back in the day, BioWare was very open with releasing Star Wars: The Old Republic’s soundtrack to fans. Half of it was contained in the special edition soundtrack CD while the other half was (and still is) posted on the website as a free download.

While the studio has been making new music for the updates and expansions, it hasn’t been as faithful in continuing to release that score since the initial launch. Happily, this is being rectified in a small way this week, as BioWare has posted five never-before-released SWTOR tracks on YouTube in honor of the game’s fifth anniversary.

We’ve got the full playlist waiting for you after the break, so that should provide a Star Wars injection into your work or school day.

Star Wars: The Old Republic outlines Season 7 PvP rewards

September 19, 2016 1 Comment

The seventh season of PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming to a close soon, and the galaxy will never be the same. Specifically, it’ll not be the same because it will be season 8 instead of season 7.

Also, there are a whole lot of different rewards you can earn from taking part in the season, so that’ll make things different. There’s even a handy chart available to see what you get once it comes to a close.

Players can earn several different awards based on their highest ratings at the end of the season, with a variety of different items available for purchase with seasonal tokens. The tier-based awards include plenty of tokens, titles, and battleflags, while the tokens can buy titles, blue-gold color crystals, and a special blue and yellow acklay mount. There’s still a little more time to earn some rewards, so now’s the perfect time to jump in and see what you can pick up before the season ends.

Star Wars: The Old Republic previews Galactic Command and unified gearing

October 18, 2016 121 Comments

When Star Wars: The Old Republic launches its next expansion, you can say farewell to the old rules about gear progression. The Galactic Command system is a new system that incorporates everything you do at the level cap into a unified progression mechanic. Playing through anything earns Command Experience, which improves your Command Rank, and every time your rank goes up you earn another crate of valuable items. More importantly, you also get more powerful gear from those crates as your Command Rank goes up.

Forum posts detailing the changes to PvE gearing and PvP gearing further clarify that this system is meant to wholly replace the existing system of gearing.

Bosses at the level cap are no longer there to drop gear; instead, raiding in the hardest modes is the fastest way to earn Command Experience rather than the only way to earn that gear. Continuing to earn up Command Rank and get better gear outside of raids is eminently possible. It’s a big change to how gear has worked in the game since it launched, but it also means that progress is becoming that much more universal and straightforward.

SWTOR starts laying the foundation for expansion’s new endgame

October 24, 2016 37 Comments

Less than a week after Star Wars: The Old Republic announced that it will be making sweeping endgame changes with Knights of the Eternal Throne, BioWare is taking actions to lay the foundation for this new paradigm. The changes started this past weekend, when the studio quietly (and days later, openly) took passes to SWTOR’s operations, flashpoints, warzones, and space missions off of the cartel market.

All of these passes will be removed from the game entirely on November 29th, removing the option for F2P gamers to gear up in the new endgame.

BioWare said that it is considering alternatives, however: “We recognize that players are interested in something similar to the weekly passes which would offer non-subscribers access to Galactic Command. We are exploring possible options and I will pass on updates as soon as we have them.”
