The Force Awakens Star Wars VII Director? - Part 1

Oh yes. Davy Jones was worth the price of admission alone, imo.

Verbinski certainly isn't lacking for imagination (not just based on Pirates, but also Rango), which is one of the major reasons I'd support him for this.

Yeah, the only problem is his schedule. Unless he's like del Toro and a huge multi-tasker, it depends how Gore deals with the post-production for "Lone Ranger". I know the film had gone through many issues, resulting in a ballooning budget and delays, so we'll see.

But I think Gore is good as long as he has a good writer by his side, we're golden. Also, he's excellent with CGI (Davy and his crew) and he's fairly practical too, using as many locations or sets as possible. That's a good thing.

Man I was really hoping Brad Bird was gonna direct. Oh well.

Trevorrow being out is huge news. There's no more wild cards on the table now.

Michael Bassett. Not that I like him, or anything.

Hahahahaha, no, and I wouldn't want him to touch SW, that hack. Just keeping the convo going, you know?

I'd prefer him. Although the bad guys would be space zombies or sth...

Tim Story for Star Wars! Because how can anyone with story in their name make a bad one? :o

Thank Lucas for the irony smiley, I thought you were being serious.

Basset did Solomon Kane. If someone makes a movie like that, they're not a hack.

I think it's hard to know how much of a "puppet' a director is, even though we on the internet like to think we know all the "going on's" in politics in Hollywood, we always don't know the case. They have not even picked anyone and everyone is freaking out? Come on. They picked a hell of a writer, I don't think they are going to try to set it up with a bad director. I think some are just starting to over-react on it.

Kennedy is not Avi, or some others that run the show, she actually does have great talent. One way or the other, I'm sure we will get a great Star Wars film.

EDIT:

Off topic I still can't see Hunter's avvy, I wonder if it's Chrome or something? lol

Word. In the grand scheme, we like to think we know more than we actually do know, and especially in these circumstances, we really don't know ****.

And I wouldn't exactly call Webb a puppet. No doubt there were things the studio wanted like the origin, but Webb had the option to make the sequel and he did. It's why the sequel could be better since he can do more with it now. Plus, to say he should instead go off and do his own things is easier said than done. He took the smart road and is building cred. He got pretty lucky in taking on this franchise despite doing one film before. Now when he does these and wants to move on, he'll find a less difficult time in getting other projects made that he may want to personally make. Plus the money's good so why the hell not do this?

really like gore for this job he can due huge scale action great with SFX can do comedy aswell as drama and can do fantasy really hits the right cues for star wars

Ugh not after what he did to Silent Hill. He sure knew how to hype the fan base too before destroying the film and probably any other chance of a good SH film being made. I gave SH:R around a 7 when I saw it but the more I think about it, the less I like it.

Actually, the big names like Jackson, Spielberg, Fincher, etc. give me some hesitance. I'd rather have someone dedicated to replicating the style of the OT faithfully than someone who winds up "putting their own mark / style" on the franchise.

I don't understand the low support for Ridley Scott.
Granted, he will never do Star Wars.

BUT, he's got enough talent to do it. And he could do a somewhat more serious take on the concept (no Jar-Jar, or similar).
Are people afraid that he's gonna have SW exist in the same "universe" as Alien, or what?

I'd rather have someone dedicated to replicating the style of the OT faithfully than someone who winds up "putting their own mark / style" on the franchise.
What's wrong with a few of the director's "darlings", some here and some there?
Just small quirks who are only noticable by film nerds, it can't be wrong!

Note that I don't mean a fell-fledged Burton gothic dream world, or a Gilliam childish surreal dream

That's what I'd rather have. I of course would want it to have a consistency from the OT to this one, but I don't want that filmmaker to be shackled by the OT.

Basset? You guys are crazy.

There's only one choice left...

He's got the experience, you guys! };)>

Someone at work mentioned they may have picked their director. like 90%. Is this true? Not sure who it is... someone involved with Pixar films?

Sparrow was never meant to be the focal point of the franchise but he pulled a 'Steve Urkle' on the series. While hes fun, Jack's not a very compelling character because he comes off as incredibly apathetic and that hurts the sequels.

Exactly, he was always meant to be the supporting character but they allowed the popularity to shift the focus on the sequels and it hurt them.

Agreed. Depp created a great, memorable character in Sparrow, but he should never have become the focus of the series. He was meant to be a foil for the straight man protagonist. And if the straight man had been a remotely interesting character in any way, I don't think they would have felt the need to shift that focus to begin with. So to me, the over-emphasis on Jack was merely the symptom - the black hole of a character that was Will Turner was the real problem. Luke Skywalker wasn't the most interesting chap in the world, but at least he had earnest conviction, and the passion for a cause, which the audience could buy into and sympathize with. Will's character basically extended to "WE MUST RESCUE ELIZABETH. And my dad. BUT SERIOUSLY, ELIZABETH." Just so dull, and I think both the writing and the performance are equally to blame.

That really brings to mind my feelings that they should have went the Indiana Jones route with the POTC movies and just made them stand alone adventures instead of trying to turn them into a Star Wars or LOTR's style mythology.
