The Force Awakens Star Wars VII Director? - Part 1

My choices for Directors:
Episode 7:
Jon Favreau - he has a small history with Disney, and his style of filmmaking would fit perfectly with the first act of the new trilogy. He also doesn't have anything immediate on his plate.
Andrew Stanton - he has a long history with Disney and the influence of Star Wars is very prominent in John Carter (as the Mars books were on the original Star Wars). He has Finding Nemo 2 rumoured to be in the works, but that isn't slated until 2016 which means he could pump out the script for FN2 once he finishes SW7
Matthew Vaugh - no history with the company, but his style could easily work with Star Wars. He has a lot of stuff on his plate though, so I don't know. He's kind of my last choice of my top choices.
Gore Verbinski - this man is a freaking genius. The scripts for his movies are usually the reason his movies have the slip-ups they do, but the directing style is unreal and that fun, action/adventure style he does would definitely benefit the return of Star Wars.

Episode 8:
David Fincher - Dark, serious and tragic second act. The fall. Much like the use of Irvin Kershner for ESB.

Episode 9:
Peter Jackson - a fitting director for the conclusion of a franchise spanning 40 years.

Exactly. I find this very weird indeed.

I think Snyder may actually wind up being the director of Episode VII.

This "separate Seven Samurai SW that coincides with the EP VII" film maybe a bit of misdirection.

Perhaps EPISODE VII's story is a Samurai Seven style of film and Lucasfilm is talking to Snyder to direct the first film in the new trilogy?

I like that Snyder's name is now being thrown around and apparently has some serious weight to it. I know they're saying it isn't for Episode 7 but something smells a bit fishy.

But Snyder denied that. And I'm still not sure how I feel about Snyder. I loved Watchmen just as much as it pissed me off, but the aspects I loved all had to do with the story and writing. I had an incredible bias against 300 and Sucker Punch was horrible. I think Man of Steel will be a better indication of his own directing style, as 300 and Watchmen were pretty much just directly adapted (with slight little twists - which were actually the things that bothered me), and then Sucker Punch was almost a parody of his own style.

I'm excited for Man of Steel, mostly to get a clear indication of whether or not he can handle a unique story. As it stands, I don't think his style fits Star Wars, but Man of Steel could/will probably prove me wrong.

Only if you want the ending to take up 35% of the overall story.
I loved the ending to LOTR. After 12 hours of depressing darkness, it was very well received in my books. Exactly why I would want it a similar ending to the final part of Star Wars. Also, a 3hrs+ Star Wars movie with INCREDIBLE War scenes?! HELL YES! I have yet to see anyone make me love a battle scene more than Jackson's stuff.

Meh. The ending to Looper was pretty short sighted and lazy. Great Directing though! As long as he doesn't change the ending from whatever Arndt has written, I'm all for it.

I don't think so at all, I think some are looking too hard into it. They did say they were going to work on spin-off's.

From what I gather, Snyder just set up a meeting with the heads of Lucasfilm, and pitched his '7 Jedi' idea. But nothing has been signed and may conflict what Lucasfilm probably wanted to do with Kasdan and Kinberg with their spinoff movies.

So all I think it was just a pitch that through the game of 'telephone' became the 'green lit Zack Synder Star Wars project'. That being said, it's possible that even if the '7 Jedi' gets a pass, Lucasfilm could consider Zack for the other spinoff movies, probably depending on how good 'Man of Steel' is.

Depending on how successful Man of Steel is, WB would probably want him for the sequel.

Ya I think Snyder will be tied up with that if anything. If MOS is a success.

Besides a spin-off they won't want him part of that franchise if that is the case. I still think for VII they are eyeing Vaughn.

I doubt we'll be getting 12 hours of depressing stuff in the Sequels. That was never Star Wars, nor should it be. And that's the very reason why a 30+ minute slowmo sequence of finales will ruin it (not that it served the LotR trilogy better, but that's just me).

Sorry, either you misunderstood or I wasn't clear. I meant the depressing stuff specifically about LOTR. For Star Wars I would like a bit of wrap up aside from just "Yub Nub". Either way, Jackson would obviously portray a fitting ending for the saga. He knows it's different from LOTR. Also, keep in mind, Jackson wouldn't be writing it, and finally Jackson is probably the best director as far as battle's go and he's definitely up their with the best directors of all time otherwise. A final battle sequence directed by Jackson would be UNREAL!!!!!!

No, I understood and you were clear. I was talking about LotR, too.

Still, when it comes to swordfights, I must point out Stardust. Take those duels and rotoscope some lightsabers in. Jackson's got nothing.

As for massive fights... if Oliver Stone did one, anyone can. PJ's achievement ain't that grand in my book. Nobody beats Mel Gibson's Braveheart in that department.

No to Peter Jackson but yes to Drew Goddard or Joe Cornish. They have lighter resumes but they are geek friendly and have done some great work with their first films. (IE Cabin in the Woods and Attack the Block) Plus both have worked with Joss Whedon and Edgar Wright (Both with projects at marvel.) and I wouldn't be shocked if Joss and Edgar recommended them.

Although I hated Attack the Block, I think Cornish >>>>> Goddard.

You probably would loved it if awful hayden Christensen was in it, swinging on vines with ugly monkeys in Hawaii with mermen.

Long live Attack the Block!

I did like the aliens in it. I was hoping they'd win, 'cause I wanted all the protagonists dead.

Too bad. I liked the protagonists fine. It was a tight, fresh film that was a better homage to 'Amblin' than 'Super 8' was. And I liked Super 8, but 'Block' created its own identity with old and new concepts.

And Goddard and Whedon successfully deconstructed the horror genre, and it's cliches and limited imagination. Bravo to them! Bravo!

Regardless if you don't like their filmed efforts thus far, you cannot deny their talent and we as geek should encourage talented filmmakers like these and not Timor Russiandude who did Wanted and Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. That dude was a hack from the get-go even with Nightwatch.

Take out the latter part and that'd be a bingo. Although I don't think even Hayden would've been able to save it.

Who says I like Amblin?:oldrazz:

I liked Cabin in the Woods. But I must give the most kudos to Whedon, not Goddard. The direction was absolutely nothing to write home about, imo.

I can deny talent if I don't see it. But that's another matter. I think Goddard can do good stuff and improve to become great, but seriously, I wouldn't want him for Ep7. As for Timur... yeah... I think it's best if he fades away.

I hope Drew gets Star Wars in spite of you, thus driving you mad! ;)

And yes, Timur is awful. I think a guy like Joss could've made a better satire in his sleep than Timur with Abe Lincoln.
