You know what's a not so popular casting choice for the Riddler? Joaquin Phoenix.
I always considered him in the role while others flocked to "oh Johnny Depp for Riddler!" or Michael C Hall, Michael Emerson, Casey Affleck. The latter 3 aren't bad mind you. But I always thought he had the acting chops to do it, maybe not the look. But after seeing the teaser for
The Master....boy oh BOY! I think how he looks at the moment is a perfect match. He's really thinned down, aged yes, but that's what i was thinking.
They'll probably want to make Edward Nygma much less costumey and campy, but they run the risk of Heath Ledger-Joker comparisons if they find the skinny 29-30 year old actor who acts quirky and plays mind games with Batman. Couple that with the possibility of bringing in a director like Affleck (or some say Aronofsky) where they try to bite Nolans gritty crime film element for Riddler? You might get a rip-off vibe from the whole thing.
I already think Riddler is a bit of a Joker immitator as it is sometimes, but they should go out of their way to do little things. Like making the character in his 40s, he can still be a bit of an oddball and quite obsessive. But with Joaquin Phoenix in the part, he'll nail the role, won't necessarily be everyones number 1 choice, and he has his own identity as an actor. People won't immediately think of Ledger, etc.
For good measure don't get Affleck to direct, make a more fantastical Gotham.
OH and Bryan Cranston as Gordon FTW!
