Did Gone With The Wind have as much action as TDK with another 30 minutes of action tacked on? I hope to hell the extra 30 minutes is mostly character stuff and not just mind-numbing action scenes. Besides, I happen to think GWTW was indulgent in many ways and not anywhere near as great as a lot of other folks seem to think. You want a great 3+ hour movie? Godfather 1 and 2 will do the trick IMHO.

When has Nolan indulged in action? He indulges in characters and story, not action.

Though it would make sense for there to be more action then TDK if the film is longer, especially if the end battle is the battle to end all Bat battles.

Easy: SWAT/sonar and ferry boat nonsense. That stuff took up around 10-15 minutes of runtime.

But something happening to the ferries was already set up and it also demonstrated The Joker's deception skills by messing around the hostages. It was also the scene in which Batman beat The Joker (in a way) so hardly a scene you could take out.

If you say TDK was 10-15 minutes too long what scenes should have been taken out?

It's not so much cutting a scene out as it is a bit too much written in. Like everything that was in there had to happen because it was the plot...but unfortunately the viewer is a bit too 'punch-drunk' by the time we get to the 'sonar-vision' sequence paralleled with the boat bombs and stuff because so much has already gone on. That didn't serve the experience very well and points to narrative streamlining more than more cutting of scenes.

But it's still relatively minor in a movie that was as enjoyable as it was.

You have to replace it with something. You have to catch the Joker...

Personally think it all worked well. The only problem was that some of the ferry dialogue was too heavy handed.

Nothing in TDK needed to be cut, the final parts were great, I loved it all.

Most of my favorite films are of long length, The Godfather, LOTR, Lawrence of Arabia, TDK, Inception ect ect. Nolan does not make long films for the sake of it he never has, the reason he creates long movies is because he has giant stories to tell. That's what I love about it.

OK then, add in the Scarecrow scene at the beginning as well. Another dumb action scene just for the hell of it.

Well, it was the audience's reintroduction to Batman and what life's been like for the Bat since we last saw him. The scene has a purpose.

you DO realise these are action films right? The scarecrow scene and the swat scene served an important purpose in that regard.

Uh... what? Reintroduced Batman, showed the copycats, allowed for the Alfred/Bruce scene and also emphasized the need for a new suit. It was anything but dumb or "just for the hell of it."

It is a fine example of show, don't tell.

Ya it did, it also closed an arc in Begins, as well showed how the freaks are starting to rise, and how afraid the mob is of Bats. Love that scene. The music is great too it that part.

It was all like having a second dessert after a big meal, if you will, and a very heavy rich one, too...when it should have been a nice sharp shot of espresso, if you will. A very good second dessert and all, but just a bit too much.

The question asked to Paul Franklin was if "journalists" had seen the film. Not if a VFX guy's wife has. So there's still merit to this.

Shut up! :argh: This is news worthy of going "Goku" over.

Lord Commander, I shall join you and celebrate Roger Nail's latest tweet. I strongly believe it will be around 3 hours! Team 3 Hours FTW!

But surely the ferry scene was incredibly important (a little of the dialogue could have been cut yes) but it was a tool for Batman to beat The Joker as it proved the people of Gotham were good people and could not be broken by The Joker.

Could have tightened it a bit, but removing the boat scene altogether would have necessitated a major reworking of the climax. Anyway, three hours won't be long if it's done well and the story is paced accordingly - my biggest fear is of a flabby, Batman-less second act.
And, for the record, The Two Towers is the best LOTR movie.

Yeah, to make me look at my watch. :oldrazz:

Haha, no seriously though, you can't have a batman film without showing him breaking a few bones, by the sounds of things you'll love the first 40-60 mins of TDKR, I hear it's very character heavy, action light. (apart from the prologue)

Not for me. People like to act like just because the chase happened, the film felt over. I never felt like the film was close to over. It was just getting started. The Joker just got away, Harvey was just scared and the city was more frighted then ever. It was not dissimilar to Michael's revenge in The Godfather.

The Joker's scene in front of the fire made it quite clear we were just getting started.

Oh it was all important...just a bit too much as a whole. Like a meal with a certain side or sauce is vital....but if it's too rich it'll leave you feeling bloated.

Not doubting you but from where?
