The Dark Knight Rises The 80th TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread

What's with you guys? Marketing for movies shouldn't be thrown at our faces at the last minute.. yes, waiting until June to start pushing the film is last minute. There should be a nice, steady flow of images, press releases, articles over the course of a few months leading up to the film. We still haven't gotten an official plot synopsis, we still haven't gotten a third poster, we barely have 12 images from the film. Enough with the, "there's still plenty of time!" talk. A synopsis should have been released months ago and the third poster with the third trailer. Every interview is the same story, "Bane is big and bad! This is the last Batman movie! Chris Nolan wants everything to come full circle!" We all get that, that's telling us nothing about our most anticipated movie. Them throwing pictures, tv spots, posters in our face in June is going to be overwhelming.

Dude... the Avengers is still on fire right now. There is a TDKR trailer right in front of it. Why in the world would WB waste money marketing something that is already getting FREE publicity from a rival studio?

A nice steady flow of images for months and months is definitely not the way to go. With a summer as big as this one, that would be wasted effort. An onslaught of TDKR marketing will work out great, especially since the only 'competition' in July is Spidey... and needless to say, Spidey = Ant, er, spider...Bats= Boot.:BA

You need to learn more about advertising and brush up on advertising for movies in the past.

June is not last minute, especially when we already have the final theatrical trailer out, not to mention we had the first and second(broken mask bane in background)teaser posters up in theatres for months now.

Pretty much all movies that have decent to great marketing follow this strategy. All we have left is final posters and TV spots. We're already getting the merchandise out now too. You need to be more patient and stop acting like the movie won't do well because they didn't release everything two to three months ago.

Another Modine interview: http://www.gazette.net/article/2012...ideas-ideals-and-short-films&template=gazette
A&E: You’ve worked with Kubrick and now Christopher Nolan on the upcoming “The Dark Knight Rises.” How does it compare working with these two really established, vetted directors?

Modine: I can’t compare the two, really, because I spent two years working with Stanley Kubrick. So I can’t compare that experience, really, with any other director I worked with because [I spent] two years working with somebody who is arguably a genius and a great filmmaker and an artist. But I do think they’re extraordinary filmmakers and what I think what they have in common is a unique vision. The hardest struggle for an artist is to find their own voice and not to try to replicate something that somebody else is doing and I think that they share that, that they’re both in the process of discovering who they are and in the process of being and becoming.

That's the point. Did you not see the Avengers marketing? I couldn't change the channel without seeing an Avengers TV spot in April and May.

If this movie makes a penny less than anyone here expects of it... you will all criticise the marketing.

''They are brilliantly biding their time... the storms coming. It genius''

...will become...

''Thats what happens when your coy with marketing. They shoulda laid it on thicker much earlier.'' :funny:

Truthfully... I think TDKR has its target audience primed and ready to go, but the general public may need a little broader persuasion.

EDIT: DAMN THIS LAG!!
I can careless about box office results, this movie with or without proper marketing will be huge.

Now.. why is it so frowned upon to say that the marketing hasn't been dealt with that well? There is no reason to give a facepalm to someone expressing their opinion on the matter. Am I wrong for wanting some pictures from my most anticipated movie of all time? An official plot synopsis maybe? What's wrong with that?

Anyway, I'm sure I'll be pleased when things do pick up but we've been saying it's going to pick up for the past 4 months. They have no choice now.

Oh, and there was a TV spot a few days ago with the NBA playoffs. i mean... the play offs are still going...

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with the marketing...

Apart from the virals (which only fanboys knew about anyway), the marketing is pretty identical to TDK.

The only thing we THOUGHT we would have had by this point is the final poster. Apart from that we're good.

I don't dislike Devin for being critical of the Batman films. I dislike him because he's an obnoxious d-bag that loves attention. Same reason I don't bother with most of the AICN crew anymore.

That your personal expectations haven't been met doesn't mean the overall marketing is bad.

I agree the Avengers marketing was way over done, though I wouldn't be angry if I saw a few TV spots for TDKR on television.

@Figs, not everyone goes to the movies so not everyone sees these posters. The TDKR posters aren't even up in the theater I go to anymore (Lowes).

@Pfeiffer, we also haven't gotten the official plot synopsis which no one seems to care about.

@Cory, I'm not the only one.

Sorry the facepalm offended you.... but you ask for a tv spot...we just got one. you ask for posters...we just got two (they suck, but they exist)...you ask for a plot synopsis...well...its obvious what the gist of the movie is, no? Pics? didnt we just see some new images in a magazine? Its starting to pick up.

So who's got their judging hats on?

I just submitted a Guinness world record challenge attempt regarding TDKR.... lol

I love this post. The best part about being on SHH for 10 years is that I've actually SEEN this exact thing happen.

(For the record, I think the TDKR marketing is relatively fine as is. The trailer could be attached to more films in the theaters, though).

I find it funny - why are people still complaining about the marketing?

Because you're not hyped enough? There's plenty of things for the fans out there, PLENTY! If you need more stuff in order to make you see the movie, there's something wrong with you.

Because you're concerned about the GA? Why the **** should you be concerned about the GA? That's none of your concern, it's WBs. It will in no way change the quality of the film.

If it's not one of these, why the hell are you so concerned about the marketing?

Why the does this article say there is new footage in this TV spot http://www.shockya.com/news/2012/05/21/brand-new-tv-spot-for-the-dark-knight-rises/

Anyway on the marketing front I've been thinking it over. When I look back at it everything that has been revealed is very good. I think the problem is the very uneven approach it is presented. I mean we have the spy set photos sure but that isn't WB. Sooooo lets think. The Bane pic in May then nothing for a loooooooooonnng time, then in July the teaser trailer and Poster then nothing again for a loooooooong time. Then in December it was the viral campaign, leaks of the trailer, Operation early bird, Poster 2, Trailer 2, Prologue, new stills and Empire article! I mean that is a lot! Then there was essentially nothing again till April (not sure of the time of the EW article) where we get another viral and trailer 3. Then early May the TF film article with a couple more stills.

Yes looking back what we got was good but it was very uneven. It seems to be stop/start/stop/start instead of a steady flow and again we have had hardly anything for a good three week and likely wont get anything till June.

Finally caved and bought the new 2012 TPB of Knightfall today. I'm already engrossed. Maybe I can get it all read before Knightquest is released on Wednesday? :awesome:
