I agree in that I think Gunn's Superman needs to be its own thing. I also think taking the approach like The Batman is the right move. Set Superman up in his younger years but have him established and build out his universe. The possibilities are endless and Superman has so many characters that could be utilized.

Unfortunately, I think the reality is that WBD wants these characters to cross over at some point and I am just not sure how you continue to establish this batman universe as a separate thing especially as Matt Reeves idea is to expand it for many years to come.

Either way I am excited to see this new take on superman and hopefully they are focused on Superman's world for at least the first movie with Easter eggs only related to his character versus a wider DCU.

I concur that Superman should really be it's own thing.

Frankly, i'll be much more excited for the hard reboot of the DCU if they treat the next Superman, Green Lantern, WW, Aquaman, Flash etc, films as their own thing , with each of the individual characters taking center stage in their solo films as opposed to placing emphasis on a larger shared universe.

After the foundation is layed in those individual films , we can look at how they all relate to each other down the line.

In the next Superman film, I want to focus on who this Clark is, not what other heroes, characters and mythologies exist outside of the story they're telling.

We have plenty of time to get to that other stuff eventually.

Honestly, I think it would be cool to show him wearing the t-shirt, Cape, and jeans as seen in Morrison's AC run at first. Maybe play up the urban legend angle at first where he gives off working-class Paul Bunyan vibes. Then, when he decides to reveal himself, have his mom reveal a suit she was working on and now we have Superman.

If we are going to do the "jeans and t-shirt" bit, can we do it more creatively than spending most of the movie in it before we get him in the real costume (which would make this movie another origin story type film, something Gunn said the movie isn't going to be)?

Like, maybe his costume gets damaged and he has to rock the jeans and outfit for a bit? Instead of doing the origin story "starter suit" ****?

I can't really see Gunn going for the shirt and jeans look, he has fun with costumes and isnt afraid to go wacky. I really think we will get the traditional suit.

I am all for this but if its going to be a Justice League universe how or when is it explained the others arrive on the scene?

I think the opposite. Give the whole league a cameo in Superman’s first film. They exist, but it’s his story.

They should Focus on the individual character films first before worrying about a Justice League film.

A JL film has to be something earned, through laying the groundwork and building to each of these characters individual journeys which eventually lead them to having to work together on a mission.

They've got to put in the hard leg worth in getting us to care about these characters and their supporting casts individually before we can care about them working together as a team.


No, JL in the first Superman film.
No appearance of Batman or Wonder Woman in the first Superman film.
No hints at Darkseid Apokolips , etc in the first Superman film.

Just focus on this Clark Kent's story and his arc for the film.
That's it.

The same should hold true for the rest of the individual films

If there's a ten year plan, we'll see how all of these characters fit into a larger plan and universe.

Imvho this needs to be as safe a film as can be made, ie, no superkid, no stalker superman, no funky suit, etc.
And for pity sakes, no kryptonian as the villain.

We need a real intimidating Lex this time, that would be great.
Have him create metallo or parasite for Superman to fight.
Set Brainiac up at the end for a sequel.

Agreed, they need to play it safe with certain elements.

I will be curious to see what villain(s) he chooses. I thought that throwaway comment about Momoa being Lobo was just that, but when Gunn said he was writing a Superman movie I'm starting to think it's not that much of a stretch if Lobo is used.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he goes for a more obscure "grounded" villain in order to keep the focus on Superman. If he is really going for the young journalist angle I could see him using conduit, metallo or parasite.

I think Lobo is probably the villain, with Lex working in the background, I'd love to see Metallo, or even Toyman. Someone brought up the idea of Superman fighting robots and now I really need to see it.

This concept art from Captain Marvel is pretty much what I want to see except with Superman.

It would be pretty cool IF it were Lobo.

Maybe he's come to Earth, not to get Superman, but to get Lex.
Perhaps Someone put a bounty out on Lex, Brainiac? Mongul? It Doesn't really matter on the who.

It would be ironic that supes would have to protect his worst enemy, but he would.

Lobo coming to Earth to catch the last Kryptonian could be cool. His conflict with Superman causes collateral damage at LexCorp that creates Parasite. Essentially, Man of Tomorrow.

A post-credits tease could reveal Brainiac hired Lobo…

Yeah the more i think about it the more I want it to be Lobo, he's got a cool design, he's a cool character, he's got opportunity to return in the future for different characters, he could essentially be a space Deathstroke.

And IF Jason was gonna play Lobo that could cut down a bit on casting time.

That’s fair. Lobo could also be the impetus for Lex to jumpstart Infinity Inc., or Project Metallo to have his own superhero under this thumb. Plenty of ways to integrate Lobo into a story that still has a human/Earth-focus.

The only reason I don't see them using lobo is because they seem to be focusing on the reporter aspect. Lex would really be the perfect villain pulling the strings behind the scenes but I think they may avoid using him.

Granted I've got very limited exposure to him, but for the life of me, I just can't fathom what people see in Lobo. He's looks and seems like the ultimate example of the 1990's "middle-age men trying too hard make something WICKED COOL DUDE for the kids" trend of the era.

I mean, the whole genesis of the character was to spoof that kind of thing to a certain degree. So working within that framework, a straightforward action comedy not dissimilar to Deadpool, yeah go for it.

But the desire to see him going head-to-head with Superman, when we’ve been utterly robbed of Superman’s rogues gallery already… I’m scratching my head. Throw him a cameo, maybe. But he’s not a Superman villain, folks.

I don't know if Man Of Tomorrow is based on any comic book run or not, but to me Lobo and Martian Manhunter felt very shoehorned into the story of that film (the villain was Parasite, an earth bound character). I would rather save Lobo for a sequel or some crossover film after this Superman is established with his first film (after the audience has gotten a chance to care about him).
