I'm not a fan of clones in general but everything depends on execution and Gunn Is pretty talented at the genre so I'm not worried. I do wonder how long the "Ultraman" will exist. Like if he's born and destroyed in one night or if they actually do a framing Superman story

Notice how he didn't debunk anything lol He just said Lex would be the main villain... which he'd still be given the rumor is he created Ultraman.

You always try to read between the lines with Gunn...and he never is cryptic. He is debunking it it isn't hard to figure out.

Maybe believe him, the guy who knows, and not the scoopers who are almost always wrong.

I honeslty have no preference over who should be the villain here. I haven't loved any Luthor in live action so a new iteration from a drastically different creative voice from ever before is fine by me. Idk if the villain being Brainiac or Metallo would inherently make it better either.

I don’t know if the Ultraman rumor is true or false (Gunn worded that response in such a way that UM could still be the secondary villain and he’s just not confirming it). But at least his latest post does confirm that Lex will be the central bad guy here and not a villain off to the side like some have speculated.

Anyway, if Ultraman is in this and is a clone, I feel like that takes away some of what makes Ultraman interesting. While yes, at his core, he’s just an evil version of Superman, I think what makes that character (and the Crime Syndicate) appealing is the evil universe he comes from. Justice League: Earth 2 portrayed this brilliantly by showing how Ultraman’s world is inherently evil to the point that even characters who try to do good in it ultimately turn into full-on fascists when they achieve their goals. Additionally, I like how Ultraman and the others aren’t just evil copies of their JL counterparts; they are often different people or have wildly different origins. Ultraman was Clark Kent, but this version was a human astronaut who gained powers by exposure to kryptonite. Owlman is Thomas Wayne Jr.; Bruce is dead. Superwoman is actually Lois Lane. Those twisted origins make those characters more fun. I’m personally sick of multiverse shenanigans but I would rather see the Crime Syndicate than have Ultraman essentially be a handsome version of Bizarro.

Why are you all surprised Lex is the villain...we have known that for months.

We knew he was in the movie for months and had rumors suggesting that he was prominently featured, which all made sense enough.

I was just hoping that for once, for once, he wouldn't be the main villain and be more of a supporting character playing his own games amidst the chaos that Clark is dealing with and build up to him taking center stage in a later film.

I....don't mind Lex being the primary villain. (Assuming the rumors are true) I'm ok with Ultraman/ Bizarro being the physical match for Superman, it comes down to execution for me. Sure, I would've prefered someone like Parasite or a Metallo, but atleast we've never seen this character on the big screen before.

My guess is that it's hard to do a "Lex frames Superman" story with Bizarro. I mean, sure you can do it but Bizarro can only take you so far because he's deformed and stupid. Also I think that with Gunn first bringing up the whole thing about how part of what inspired this movie was thinking about Clark's upbringing and roots I guess maybe Gunn wants to make a point on "What if Clark was instead raised by Lex Luthor of all people" and have a take on the clone that's actually a Superman counterpart instead of a dumb monster. I'd be shocked if he doesn't do Bizarro eventually in the DCU though.
I'd be surprised if Gunn isn't doing an amalgamation where Lex calls the clone Ultraman before it decomposes into classic Bizarro. Maybe Lois can come up with that name.

Post-crisis Lex is such a distinct character that it doesn't really feel like there has been a movie where he's the big bad to me. Hopefully there's another villain present even if it is as Lex's lackey but, I dunno, I'm fine with it - Lex in combination with other villains is the main antagonist in a huge chunk of the DCAU and I never found it got old.

Well, so much for Brainiac being in this film. Now I'm curious on why they even showed a panel from that storyline when it's becoming clear that Brainiac isn't involved.

He's been plenty cryptic and coy before lol Like when he debunked the middle east plot because it turned out he changed it to eastern europe. Or when he said "I never said Supergirl is in Superman" when it's obvious per the trades she is, or when he did the same thing for Lex on Rosenbaum's podcast.

Saying "Lex Luthor is the main villain, there are rumors out there" is not a denial of the "Ultraman as a clone created by Luthor" rumor at all. I don't need to "believe him" when he isn't even denying anything.

I think Gunn has ****ed himself a little bit by denying rumours so often and so specifically that it's now relatively easy to get a read on how he goes about it.
